QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 24, 2010 -> 08:31 PM) So, for whatever it's worth, I think I had one of the gay guys at the Pumpkins concert last night sorta making a pass at me. Oh, do tell...

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 24, 2010 -> 09:42 PM) Ozzie shouldn't get fired for roster mistakes...he doesn't have the final decision, even if he's wrong. That is the entire reason they allowed him to have the input he's had though - so they could hold him accountable.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 24, 2010 -> 09:36 PM) Well, one thing's for sure, the team is definitely not going to be bankrupt because of the owner. It's not a situation like the D-Backs or Rangers, and interestingly, and both of those teams contended quite nicely when they were supposedly going through financial problems (although you can see the effects/fallout out in Phoenix now). The Scherzer and Austin Jackson trades have worked out quite nicely for the Tigers, I have a hard time seeing the Tigers being dismantled when we thought the same thing going into this year and they were able to add Valverde and Damon. If they can get Galarraga and Porcello straightened out 100%, they'll be a competitive team, for sure. Like seemingly every team, they have a hole at the back end of their rotation...but so do the White Sox, possibly. I agree. They'll scale it back a bit, probably pare payroll down the the $100 million level, but I don't think they are going to be drastically throwing all well-paid assets overboard to avoid the ship sinking or anything...
-
QUOTE (qwerty @ Jul 24, 2010 -> 07:51 PM) Looking further ahead... this very well might be a blessing for the tigers. Yes, probably, although they probably won't save as much as many will think at first. He's actually had a nice year this year, and while he certainly is not worth $15 million, an .875 OPS player to replace him probably won't come cheaply...My guess is it probably saves them somewhere in the realm of $4-5 million next year, if that. However, should they need to trade for someone to replace him this year, and pay for that guy too, they probably end of negating all of that money anyways.

QUOTE (AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Jul 24, 2010 -> 12:11 PM) Dunn will be a White Sox and Oswalt will be a Phillie by July 31st per someone I know with the Phillies. On both accounts, or just the Phillies part?

QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Jul 23, 2010 -> 04:02 PM) Fielder/Parra- White Sox (My BOLD SUMMER BLOCKBUSTER PREDICTION) Haren- Tigers Lilly- Phillies Oswalt- Cardinals Aramis Ramirez- Tigers Berkman- Angels I threw this out about a month ago...unfortunately it included Johnny Danks going to the Brew Crew...

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 22, 2010 -> 07:06 PM) I don't like Butler at all. He's a doubles machine and sports a nice OBP. But he's got pathetic overall pop for a player his size/position. Are you kidding? Sure, he's not quite Albert Pujols yet, but he's going to be an absolutely outstanding hitter for like the next 15 years. I'm not sure if he's even 24 yet...

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jul 22, 2010 -> 11:23 AM) Would much rather focus on getting someone like Yonder Alonso, young, under team control, and not nearly the expense in prospects. A deal based around Putz and some minor leaguers like Morel, and low level pitchers could probably get the deal done. Cinci is in win now mode and is hurting for bullpen help, Alonso is blocked behind the NL MVP and had a bad start to the season in AAA so his value is not at its peak. It also fills the hole at 1B next season and gives the team some flexibility with Viciendo at either 3B or DH. If you need to include Hudson you may also be able to pry Bailey back and give Coop a chance to "fix 'em". You might even be able to include Teahen if Rolen is hurt for a significant amount of time. Fielder is going to cost way too much in terms of prospects and $$, it appears Dunn will as well. I would rather roll the dice with a young guy than trade away the future for a big question mark. Neither Dunn nor Fielder have ever played in the AL and there would be some adjustment period and adding a veteran can cause chemistry issues, see Nick Swisher. Putz is indispensible, especially since Jenks cannot be trusted. Morel has a torn labrum apparently.

Well, the issue with the guaranteed contracts is basically addressing itself by the players asking for frontloaded contracts with huge signing bonuses. The free market usually figures out a way to deal with the inefficiencies of the system. I do agree with the rookie wage scale though - there is no way a rookie QB that has never played an NFL game should be getting more guaranteed money than Peyton Manning or Tom Brady.
-
The issue with the blown saves/saves converted logic is that you could apply that to pretty much any major league pitcher and he would convert a reasonable number of them. The bottom line is the guy cannot be trusted.

How about Closer by Someone other than Bobby?

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jul 16, 2010 -> 09:19 AM) Vanessa Hudgens has absolutely perfect legs... just sayin. I saw pictures of her naked a while back...I have like 5 girls just in my building that are hotter than her...just sayin...

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 04:14 PM) It's not really as funny typing it as if I was narrating it. The short version is that I was out with this group of guys, one of them wanted to f*** this Filipina waitress so me, so I played point guard for him and hooked them up, because I broke the touch barrier on her for him. In the process I caught the attention of one stripper in particular (the one who did not have HIV) who gave me her # and stopped just short of bringing me home with her (incidentally, doing this way too many times is how Stripper 2 ended up getting HIV). I didn't do anything with Stripper 1 for the record. But she was trying to get me to buy her dinner and drinks and stuff when we went out which was funny. I was like no sweetheart, the wallet-draining act ends when you leave your job, and I treat you like a regular girl. And does she stop looking like a stripper then too?
-
QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 02:55 PM) This past weekend I went out with a stripper (ok, you're probably thinking WTF there must be a long story involved - the answer is yes, there is) and she introduces me to a friend at the bar, also a stripper but both dressed normally since they weren't at work. Stripper #2 is really friendly. Stripper #1 leans over to me and says "yeah, she is really cool and a sweetheart, but don't drink anything after her." lol. Don't gotta tell me twice. She texts me at the table and says rumor has it she has HIV. I know you can't really get HIV from drinking out of the same cup as someone (at least I'm pretty sure that's how I remember), but still... yeesh. Oh, you never know where the mouth of a stripper has been. Did you have the number for Stripper # 1, by the way?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 03:22 PM) The Braves didn't expect to keep Tex either. The Brewers are in the Rangers spot in this scenario. The unnamed team acquiring Fielder is the team that would be gunning for the pennant this year and having to give up a ton. I suppose....there seemed to be a lot more interest in Teix than Fielder...probably due to the increased value placed on pre-arb players these days.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 03:04 PM) Then there's little reason for them to deal him, esp. now. Just look what the Braves gave up for Tex when they originally got him. Salty, Feliz, and Andrus were in that deal. The difference is the Braves had a deep system and a desire to win that particular year. The Brewers have a huge need for arms and no chance to contend this year, and no ability to keep both Prince and Braun. A better barometer would probably be what the Angels gave up to get Teix from the Braves.

QUOTE (hi8is @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 01:52 PM) 3 starting pitching prospects - one of which projects as a number 1/2 and is in AAA Interesting. Given the cash considerations involved I don't think they're going to do that well...but you never know.
-
QUOTE (hi8is @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 02:42 PM) If I was Milwaukee - I'd sure as hell want more than a package based around Hudson as well. You never know what K-dub will be able to pull off though... That sly dog. What would you want?
-
QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 01:16 PM) Olney tweets Sox would have to give up Gordon to acquire Fielder. I like Fielder but I don't think Kenny would pull the trigger on the trade with some of the names being mentioned. I think it's a play for Dunn/Rizzo to make up his mind. I disagree. I believe that Rizzo genuinely has no intention of dealing Dunn unless he simply gets an offer he cannot refuse.
-
QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 01:09 PM) Because he'd get somewhere around $15 million from the arbitrator and that's pretty much all we're going to have to spend on players next year. I know that...you said he would literally handcuff us....I doubt he is going to literally attempt to handcuff us. I think you meant figuratively. Sorry, just being an ass.
-
QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 12:58 PM) Fielder would put us in a financial pickle next year. He'd literally hand-cuff this team with his arbitration. You don't need a huge .400 wOBA hitter like Fielder or Dunn. You need somebody who's better than the combined .320 wOBA Kotsay and Jones are putting up. Adam LaRoche, David DeJesus, Luke Scott, they all can do that. You don't want to over-do it. Hah, why would he do that?
-
QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 01:39 PM) If the Brewers want pitching and they aren't big on Hudson, than shouldn't that just about end talks. We don't have anyone else. Unless a third team is in this too. Which is why that is identified as being "the problem."
-
QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 12:30 PM) Wite, the problem with WHIP (and ERA) is that a closer can have one outing where he pitches 0.0, gives up 6 ER with 6 walks/hits, and then be totally effective for his next 13 outings, and still have a s***ty WHIP and a s***ty ERA. He has done his job 13/14 times, but his line looks totally s***ty. You're going to skew the crap out of every stat if you have incredibly bad performances once in a while. Are you arguing that blown saves is still a good statistic?

QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 10:40 AM) At what point does the organization give Alexei a new contract? Well, they could look into buying out his arbitration years and maybe his first year or two of FA if they were interested. My guess is they'll end up paying $5 and 6 million or so for his arbitration years and then maybe $7-8 on the open market were he to be a FA. Sometime next season they could possibly offer him a 4 year deal worth $25 million or so would be my guess.
-
QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 21, 2010 -> 09:31 AM) He makes $1.1 million next year. Then two arbitration years. The good thing is that I don't forsee Alexei becoming an incredible offensive player, so as long as he doesn't win gold gloves (which I don't think he will with Jeter and Andrus still in the league), the arbitrator isn't going to award him a lot of money if it were to go to arbitration. Odds are they'll avoid arbitration with him and agree to 1 year deals with him. Probably end up making $5-6 million a year.
