QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 03:31 PM) If they can't use computers, etc. Ryan is out now. Blago will be out in a few years. Put an ankle bracelet on him. Make him stay at home. Everyone wins. He still is stuck, but at least his daughters and wife have their father and husband. And taxpayers don't have to pay for his jailing. Take away these losses and you take away the deterrent. That's literally all we have to stop these people from doing corrupt things. If all they had to do is get out of politics and pay a fine, EVERYONE would do it and work really hard to put off getting caught until they're older. Frankly I'd increase the penalties for corruption. Make some examples of people. There should be more criminal charges and longer sentences. And if it's money involved, they should pay every dime back.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 02:58 PM) If a politician or political commentor that is aligned with a party defends/excuses sexual harrassment because of party affiliation, damn right I will politicize that. No that's just being a good human being and criticizing terrible people saying/doing terrible things. There's no need to attach political party affiliation to it. Dems don't get to "own" that sexual harassment/assault shouldn't be tolerated.

QUOTE (Reddy @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 12:45 PM) For political and optics reasons, Franken should resign. Based on his statement, if the context (Moore/Trump) were different, I'd defend him staying. But the context isn't different, and not resigning undercuts the moral high ground on issues of sexual harassment/assault that the Dems wish to have. 1) Pretty certain all of the conservatives I know don't condone sexual harassment/assault. Don't mistake politicians for speaking for the majority of people. 2) I'd really like to see what the split was in Congress for the 10-15 million in harassment/assault settlements that have been paid out. My guess is it's a pretty good mix of Dems/Republicans. 3) It's sad that an issue like sexual harassment/assault has to be politicized. But, 2017.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 12:22 PM) The first part isnt the analogy at all. Franken is saying that it was part of a comedic routine. Their is evidence that in other comedic routines there were sexual jokes. If there were absolutely no other sexual jokes, it would definitely bolster her allegations. And we both know that just because someone has sex with one person, doesnt mean they consent with another. That is not even close to what is being alleged here. I dont really care what court of public opinion is. Just last night before the Franken thing I was saying that there is a possibility that one of Moore's accusers forged his signature. Fair is fair, whether they are my ally or opponent. I see, you're relating it to the routine. I thought you were just saying because she was open sexually in one situation she probably was in this one.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 12:02 PM) The problem with the article is that there is no way to know whether Franken or Tweeden is telling the truth. As Rock alluded to, there are videos of Tweeden with Robin Williams where she wraps her legs around him in a sexually way for laughs at a similar USO event. It will be interesting to see if anyone else comes out against Franken. I don't think this matters much. If a woman likes sex that doesn't mean she consents to all sex. That's basically your analogy there. Also, with the way this has all gone, in the court of public opinion, there is no innocent until proven guilty. If someone makes a claim, we believe it and then respond accordingly.

After the last couple of weeks with these allegations/stories swirling, it was a pretty terrible time for my wife and I to start watching The Keepers on Netflix. This world is full of awful, sick people.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 10, 2017 -> 03:23 PM) It's a pretty common theme For sure. I've seen it play out in several high quality videos online.

At least he's not giving a denial/i'm now seeking treatment response.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 9, 2017 -> 04:18 PM) At their base, that is what all of these scandals have in common. People in positions of power abusing those positions to feed their sexual appetites, then using that power to bury any threats that come out of those activities. Meanwhile people who view their circle as being more important than anything else they talk about (equal rights or God as the case may be, etc) use it as an opportunity to beholden themselves to the original offender(s) by finding ridiculous excuses to defend said behavior. While the offenders are absolutely horrible people, the secondary group that sells out everything to defend the offenders is almost worse because they have absolutely no spine at all. You know there are a ton of people that publicly praised these sickos knowing full well what they were doing because it benefited careers.

One concern I have is that this stuff is all getting lumped together. Hoffman's dirty old man antics with a young girl is vastly different than Weinstein's/Spacey's rape/assault behavior.

Louis CK's is especially creepy given his bit after bit about how men are awful and treat women like sex objects.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 9, 2017 -> 09:25 AM) I love the poorly educated. Yep that's what I said!
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 9, 2017 -> 08:58 AM) ....why? Because we need to de-emphasize higher education for the vast majority of people. Racking up insane amounts of debt isn't a good start to a career.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 9, 2017 -> 08:51 AM) I didn't realize exactly how bad this was until this morning. It's not just taxing whatever stipend you get for being a TA, maybe $15k a year. It's taxing tuition waivers, too. So if you're going to grad school that'd normally cost $30k but that is waived for various reasons, you're now going to be taxed on that $30k. This is going to make going to grad school essentially impossible for a lot of people. e.g. Graduate Students Say GOP Tax Plan Could Increase Their Taxes by Nearly 300% That's on top of eliminating student loan interest deductions. Gotta keep that carried interest loophole and cut estate taxes, though! Cartoon villainy. I'm not a fan of the tax plan, but making graduate school more cost prohibitive is probably a good thing.

Finished Stranger Things 2 last night. So what else is out there right now that people recommend? My wife and I are in need of a new one-hour show. We're about 6 episodes into the Deuce but it's a tough watch. It's so dirty and grimy and unappealing. Really well done, but I feel like I need a shower after I watch it.

So it sounds like the system failed in this case. He should not have been allowed to purchase the gun he used. Someone forgot to report his conviction which would have been picked up in his background check. -
QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 6, 2017 -> 07:49 PM) A long, but absolutely riveting read by Ronan Farrow on how Weinstein pressured people into silence. https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/ha...s-army-of-spies I really, really hope he gets jail time. And that someone can successfully sue him and he loses everything. Oh, and that Hollywood implodes because of the garbage human beings running it.

QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 3, 2017 -> 03:07 PM) Do you think any modern sports owner says "May I really want to buy the Marlins, seems like a great return on investment!" Yes, yes they would. Sports franchises are a finite commodity. It doesn't matter that they won't make you a lot of money from operations, you get one and you're super rich and you want to impress your friends. And when it comes time to sell, some other rich asshole that wants to impress his friends will pay more than the financials say the team is worth. https://www.statista.com/statistics/194615/...ins-since-2006/ -
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 3, 2017 -> 10:45 AM) I dunno where to dump this since it doesn't deserve it's own thread, but Berghdal is only being dishonorably discharged, no prison time. e: the judge specifically said he was considering Trump's dumbass tweets about Bergdahl for sentencing. gotta wonder what impact his DEATH PENALTY!!!!!! tweets about the NYC attacker will have. I'm a little torn on this. He got a lot of people killed for at worst being a traitor or at best being a complete and utter moron. But if he was to be believed, he was also imprisoned and tortured while a captive, so I suppose it's sort of a wash.

Don't worry guys, he's going to get treatment! https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/02/arts/kev...nt-old-vic.html What a joke.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Nov 1, 2017 -> 12:22 PM) This is fair. Really anything past JFK at the least. That being said, Clinton's admin was pretty good on war past a few hiccups. Um, keep going back. This has been happening for most of the country's history. It's been a more prominent feature of our foreign policy "recently," but "recently" probably means Teddy Roosevelt and after. JFK did the same thing, by the way, sending troops into Vietnam and overthrowing the existing regime there.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Nov 1, 2017 -> 10:19 AM) http://amp.slate.com/blogs/the_slatest/201...lawyer_dog.html Police are trying to argue when defendant asked for "attorney, dog" he meant "attorney dog" as in an actual dog that was an attorney. Even though I know not every Judge is the smartest person in the world, i'm consistently amazed how smart people make really stupid decisions.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 30, 2017 -> 05:18 PM) Netflix apparently just canceled House of Cards. AFTER the next season. HoC has been nearing the end anyway. I'm not sure how much story was left.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Oct 26, 2017 -> 05:21 PM) I'm worried about the PR hit, but I'm really worried about this Ayo situation going forward. He just (and yes, it's on him though I understand the adults carry a large burden of this) denied a recruit that the staff REALLY wanted, how the hell do you have any confidence for the future with him now? How do you not expect him to pull some other s*** at some point? And to those saying it's not on the kid, come on man, you're telling me if Ayo stood up and told his parents and coaches to get over it, he wants to play with THT, etc that they would hold their ground? Ayo holds the cards, those coaches are dependent on kids like him, if he wanted the hand to play differently he could've changed it. I'm just really hoping that at this point his tenure at Illinois is as smooth as possible. Irvin runs a top school and top aau club. If he says take THT and you get no more guys I coach, that's above Ayo. This was bigger than one player. This was Illinois changing it's Chicago recruiting efforts. I love Illinois fans that have been b****ing for years that the coach isn't recruiting Chicago properly. Underwood just did. He hitched his wagon to the coach with the best access to the best players the next 2 or 3 years.
