OBAMA/TRUMPCARE MEGATHREAD
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 21, 2013 -> 12:15 PM) I know, you say this same thing every time. You can read more about basic income if you want, there's lots of literature out there. The city of delphine ran an experiment a while back and found positive results. What I've read doesn't provide a hard number, nor does it answer my concern - you provide a basic level of income, and it's not enough. Just like....the minimum wage. It's a great idea in theory but in practice it doesn't work because people are never satisfied. So long as there are billionaires out there people will want everything they have. And if they don't have it, it's not fair, so they should get it.

QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Nov 21, 2013 -> 11:56 AM) It's not possible. There are way too many factors to consider. Family size, married or single, lifestyle, where you live, etc... There is no one-size-fits-all "living wage". Bingo. Which is why the whole concept is dumb. We have a minimum wage. We provide protections and services for the poor. There's nothing else society can or should do. The rest is up to individual resolve and self responsibility. (this is a general comment. i'm sure there are tweaks and changes to our current system that are necessary. we don't need to become socialists like SS)

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 21, 2013 -> 11:51 AM) If someone else is picking up the health care costs and retirement costs. And society already does that. So again, what's a basic income/living wage that you all want. I want a dollar figure. Edit to your edit: kids are not a right! if you can't afford them YOU SHOULD BE PUT IN JAIL FOR CHILD ABUSE.

QUOTE (Reddy @ Nov 21, 2013 -> 11:28 AM) Let's see. I pay for my cell phone. I don't own an xbox or a car or a house or kids, and probably wont until I can AFFORD to have those things. Why do you equate an Xbox with a living wage? What's a living wage? Please define it. I consider minimum wage a living wage. You can absolutely "live" on 15-20k a year. Easily. So the next question is, what kind of minimal lifestyle should people have. That's where we all clearly disagree.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 21, 2013 -> 11:25 AM) Noted socialist Fredrick Hayek and communist Milton Friedman endorsed universal basic income. And a ps4 for every American. I'd like to know what a "basic income" would entail. Because you know as soon as you set that line, that hand will be out flat again asking for more.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 21, 2013 -> 11:20 AM) I think it's a good thing if society can allow for people to pursue engaging and rewarding careers instead of having to take whatever grudging job they can just to subsist. Universal health care and a basic income for everyone. And cell phones and xbox 360's and cars and houses and kids they can't afford and... what else should every American get?

QUOTE (Reddy @ Nov 21, 2013 -> 09:48 AM) I make $25 an hour. Remind me what you make? Sometime doesn't add up here. How did you get a $50/month policy making $52k a year? If you make that much and only pay that much for health insurance, you're part of the problem here.

QUOTE (Reddy @ Nov 21, 2013 -> 09:32 AM) If millions have to pay more, so that the 47 million people in this country who were previously uninsured are now able to afford it, then I support that - and would also support it if I were one who had to pay more. Something about what you can do for your country comes to mind... "If young people have to go to war and die to preserve our freedom, well, so be it. I support that. What you can do for your country..." - me, 31 year old who wouldn't be eligible for a draft.

So you're going to ignore the millions that were negatively affected?

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Nov 20, 2013 -> 01:53 PM) The first Uncharted was boring as s*** and the shooting mechanics were garbage. At the time it was fine, but yeah, once 2 came out there was a huge step forward. That can be said about most franchises though.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 20, 2013 -> 02:29 PM) OK, doing some math... I could easily fit my full collection of movies on a 2TB drive, maybe even 1TB but probably a little higher. So having a base computer, I can get everything I have on there plus my movies. Question is... will they be playable, or copy protected in some way? And, can I stream them to a tablet or the like FROM there? You could probably put them in cloud storage, but then you'd have to buy a tablet with a data plan to get them "on the go."

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 20, 2013 -> 02:11 PM) Primarily, yes. I have probably between 100 and 200 movies on various DVD's and BluRays. First hesitation is, can I even get them digitized onto a drive, in such a way they will actually play and not have a protection issue (some discs have this I think)? Second issue is, movies are huge files, and I'd only be able to put maybe one on a tablet type device, I think. I'd bet that most of the movies you could copy into digital form without an issue. The problem is that you'd have to spend time doing it. I think Y2HH or someone else in this thread a while ago posted a whole process on how to do it. You'd be able to get more than one movie on there though. Probably 5-10 and more if you get a tablet with a memory card slot. I have the Asus Infinity with a bluetooth keyboard. It's enough to get some work done, but it doesn't run any office products or windows products. And it's android so it's not going to run itunes. But as a websurfing, media playing, email checking and limited work device it's pretty good. It also has a mini or micro SD slot so you can expand the memory on it. My dad has one of these Acer Iconia tablets http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/model/NT.L0QAA.008 He seems to like it. It's basically a tablet with some laptop functionality. You can keep it in tablet mode or switch over to a typical desktop mode. At that price point though I think I'd rather just get a decent laptop.

I think the physical media drive is going to be a nonstarter in the tablet arena. Even if you hook up a portable drive via a USB connection, I bet that'd kill your battery life. What's the hesitation to going to digital? Just the fact that you already have the DVD's?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 19, 2013 -> 08:31 PM) The son of Virginia state senator an former governor candidate Craig Deeds was given a psychological evaluation yesterday. He was released yesterday because there were no beds available in the Richmond area. Today he is dead after stabbing his father several times and being shot, maybe suicide not sure on that part yet. Virginia cut its mental health spending by 9% from 09 to 11, closing several facilities in the process. Blame Republicans.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Nov 19, 2013 -> 11:55 PM) The best thing about it was that it forced you to pay a monthly subscription fee that you only had the option to pay before? Lol, that's a weird selling point. I did check out the PS+ free games today, and was surprised to see Uncharted 3 is free, but it's 40 GB download! I've never played any of the Uncharted games though. Um, you're missing out on 2 of the best games of the ps3/360 generation.

QUOTE (TRU @ Nov 19, 2013 -> 08:51 PM) Ok, this is all full of wrong.. First, if you get a PS4 there is no reason what so ever to keep the PS3. Its still a bluray player and media hub. Secondly, I traded in my XBOX360 and just Black Ops 2 and got $150 store credit. If you have more than 1 game and trade it in when they are running promos youll get way more than $70 Huh? It's still a great blu ray player that also happens to have some of the major video streaming services on it. Oh, and it can still play good games.

2013-2014 NFL Thread
QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 19, 2013 -> 06:20 PM) And this is why the officials shouldn't be trying to determine in real time whether a play that close was catchable. You guys, who I consider pretty bright guys, can't even agree after looking at the replay all day. The defender interfered with the receiver while the ball was in the air and prior to it being touched by a defensive player. Jenks, please explain to me why the refs should go through some real time determination of an freak athlete's capabilities (combined with a moving object, other moving players, etc), rather than enforcing a clear infraction that NO ONE. Denies occurred? I agree with you this is a close call, and they probably should not be determining if a ball is catchable unless it's obvious (the 20 feet in the air pass). However, in this situation if the officials are right there and can determine that it would be unlikely that he catches it, I have no problem with them waiving off the flag because the ball was intercepted. In the NHL the officials often times have great latitude in when to call certain penalties and when not to depending on what else is going on on the ice. I think the NFL should be that way too. I think if the officials are certain that Gronk would not have caught that ball because of his position and because of the ultimate interception, it was the right decision to waive off the flag. I can't get behind a blanket rule that a penalty is a penalty and should always be called no matter what. If things happen outside the scope of the play and don't affect the play, just play on.
