  1. Sox on the cheap so far today, acquiring mostly organizational filler players. Of the 8 picks so far, 7 have been college seniors, the other another high school catcher. Hopefully in a few rounds they start taking some more risks on kids with higher ceilings.
  2. Does drafting Hawkins instead of Stroman mean we are out on Soler? Soler and Hawkins seem pretty comparable, though Soler may start in A ball.
  3. "With a fastball that routinely touches the mid-90s, along with a mid-80s slider, the 6-foot-3, 195-pound Brennan has the best raw stuff on the team and is a candidate to be drafted in the first 10 rounds in June." From PG JC Notebook. http://www.perfectgame.org/Articles/View.aspx?article=6808
  4. Best pure hitter on ASU, has some pop in his bat, profiles average defensively at 2B. Bats cleanup, is hitting .336 this season, hit .368 last season and slugged .639. Floor is probably UTL with a good contact tool.
  5. Beck sounds like a good get, some mechanical issues to be worked out, but the potential is there. He is already 22, and will likely move fast once his delivery issues are rectified.
  6. With the first two prospects considered very signable I wonder if KW eyes a tougher sign like Alford or Kelly in the second round.
  7. I am happy with this draft....so far. Usually I am calling for a regime change by this point. Both kids have a lot of upside, much like Trayce Thompson has, but neither are as raw as Trayce was coming into the system. They are also a departure from the Keenyn Walker/Jared Mitchell types that rely mainly on athleticism/speed to be productive. To me, it is all about projectability and where would you see Hawkins and Barnum being drafted in three years. Barnum sounds more like a LH Big Hurt in the profile from PG with his ability to drive the ball and remain patient at the plate. Hawkins seems more like a more athletic version of Viciedo. If thats what the Sox feel their ceilings are, then they are great picks.
  8. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jun 5, 2012 -> 07:58 AM) Hawkins pick looks really promising. Barnum appears to have been a reach, but as others have said, I don't mind that in the comp round. And the kid does have a very high ceiling as well. Complete change in draft philosophy than several years ago. I'm happy with the day 1 picks His PG profile tells a different story than some of the scouting reports here. "Plus, the ball comes off Barnum’s wood bat with a sound that every baseball scout recognizes but that few hitters can duplicate. While Barnum’s loose, fast and extended swing produces some titanic batting practice bombs and makes the field look small at times, he has a somewhat different game approach. You don’t see the lift, length and extension as much against live pitching. Barnum has a very mature ability for a big power hitter to let the ball get deep, stay inside the ball and line the ball to the gaps. You rarely see him take the big swing-and-miss cut many similarly talented hitters of all ages will unleash (especially the aforementioned Ryan Howard), but you are likely to see Barnum square up on a 92 mph fastball and line the ball firmly over the shortstop’s head. He’s also a patient hitter who is used to being pitched to backwards and he will sometimes become a bit too patient and watch a mistake pitch in his wheelhouse go by unchallenged." http://www.perfectgame.org/players/playerp....aspx?ID=261982
  9. Thornton for Conger? The Angels don't seem to want Hank on the 25 man roster too bad and keep acquiring others to play in front of him. Could give us a potential everyday C for next season if Flowers regresses, or we could use Flowers bat in other places if he makes progress.
  10. Not a great job by Katz. If he is going to sign short term he needs to go someplace that will play to his power not Oakland.
  11. He was a pretty good pitcher for the Marlins four or five years ago, his health deteriorated as well as his ability to pitch. This is a good no risk flier to take on a guy.
  12. QUOTE (TheHugeUnit @ Jan 18, 2012 -> 01:03 PM) That's sick. Ranaudo? Andrew Brackman V2. Wilson is nice tho, I could see him as a nice bullpen option. Wilson would be a nice bullpen piece, Ranaundo's profile is a lot like the recently acquired Simon Castro, number one prospect last year who slid with a bad year. He needs more of a track record before he is relegated to Brackman status. The Red Sox system may be deep, but it really lacks impact players of any type, and most of the appealing prospects are from last years draft and not eligigle for a trade yet.
  13. Floyd to the Red Sox for Ranaundo and Alex Wilson or Floyd to the Pirates for Jeff Locke, Zack Von Rosenberg, and Bryan Morris or Floyd to the Jays for Wojo and Roberto Osuna KW has shown he is going to bring back pitching in any deal he makes and wants guys that are ready/near reaady to contribute. The one exception would be Osuna if Paddy can talk KW into taking a chance on a project.
  14. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 1, 2012 -> 01:46 PM) My other more recent example is the Casey Blake for Carlos Santana trade. The Dodgers gave up Carlos Santana for Casey ****ing Blake, because they traded him away as a 22 year old in A-ball. Santana was seen as a stud then too. The issues at the time were that Martin appeared to be the Dodgers long term solution at C and they were cash strapped. The Indians picked up Blakes salary to get a better prospect.
  15. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 21, 2011 -> 12:07 PM) No $$ With the current state of the team, Soler makes a lot more sense the Cespedes.
  16. QUOTE (Reddy @ Dec 21, 2011 -> 09:37 AM) thats. thats. just silly. you'd rather try and "contend" with this piece of crap team than trade a valuable chip and get badly needed young talent. You'd rather have Danks value be as LOW as possible when we trade him. K. Got it. If KW does not have the market for Danks now he should hold on to him. Teams that are trying to make a playoff push can get desparate in July. If KW gives a team a window to negotiate an extension during the season that increases Danks' value above what it is today.
  17. QUOTE (Whitewashed in '05 @ Dec 8, 2011 -> 01:04 PM) I believe PK was one of the ones talking, saying Ozzie's act grew old and players were tired of it. That is not what he said...he said the circus going on between Ozzie and KW was what they were growing tired of.
  18. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 8, 2011 -> 12:58 PM) Scratch the nationals off of that list. Unless they offer Bryce Harper, Kenny is going to give them a hardy f*** you. Not sure he is in a position to do that, the Nats may match up with the Sox better than most other teams due to the amount of pitching in their system.
  19. QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Dec 8, 2011 -> 12:46 PM) Hmmm.... VERY interesting. I wonder how Konerko would feel about going to play for Ozzie again. Didn't seem to bother Mark at all. I dont see it though, Pujols had value because of their Latin market. Rumor is that they will try and trade Sanchez for pitching and move LoMo to 1B.
  20. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 8, 2011 -> 12:36 PM) I'm thinking Kenny is trying to do an Indians rebuild. Perpetual?
  21. The D'backs and Rockies are also going hard after pitching. If Seattle signs Fielder they will be looking for another SP between Felix and Pineda. Pitchers available in a trade now - James Shields Matt Garza Jair Jurrjens Ervin Santana Gio Gonzalez Trevor Cahill John Danks Jon Niese Gavin Floyd -edit to add Jurrjens, forgot he was on the block too
  22. Outside the box: Danks to the Royals for Montgomery, Melville and Jeffress. Three guys that have struggled but have a lot of ability if Coop can fix'em. Generally trading within the division is bad, but the Royals window to contend will close around the same time the Sox are ready to contend again.
  23. Lost in the shuffle of the rebuilding talk is the new draft rules and how those will affect the Sox. Maybe now we are put into a competitive environment where the #1 criteria for drafting is ability and not signability. Really there is no one on this roster who can not be had for the right package. And the team cannot afford to be conservative. The reason that Beane is seen as successful if because half of the prospects he trades for actually develop. It is time to take the shotgun approach an bring in as many prospects as possible, some will fail, some will thrive, but that is where the team is right now. If nothing happens we are stuck from 3-4 in the division with no clear path.
  24. QUOTE (Reddy @ Dec 8, 2011 -> 09:28 AM) good point on Trumbo though. Unless they do some RF shenanigans for a couple years and then move Albert to DH He played LF some this season, so it is not out of the realm of possbiltity that they keep all 3, especially until the can establish what Morales will be after two years away from the game.
