Did I miss Paxton being picked?
-
QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 12:19 PM) Nationals took Cole BTW. If they sign him, that would be a tremendous addition that could potentially pair with Strasburg. Big risk/reward for the Nats, not sure how they can affor Harper and Cole after paying Strasburg last year, maybe they are better off financially than I thought. I think Cole ends up in Miami still.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 12:11 PM) You know that KW's philosophy though is to draft as many college pitchers as possible in order to move them through the system quickly and use them as trade bait quite often. I'm not too concerned about drafting hitters, as our development of hitters is comically bad. That is a valid point, but I thought Buddy Bell was supposed to be correcting this.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 12:00 PM) Some people get these false hopes that all of a sudden, the Sox are going to pick guys that have ridiculous overslot commands, forgetting our team's philosophy as well as JR's relationship with Bud. Or that we might pick guys that will contribute to the system, someone like a Gibbs or Dietrich that have value and can develop and can eventually be traded for help on the ML level if they get blocked. I just dont think bullpen guys have that value. Obviously our draft strategy of drafting cheap low upside guys has worked really well and is one of the reasons we have a loaded farm system.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 11:53 AM) Petricka is a top 50 talent who should sign for cheap. The reaction on here was like we just took a short pitcher from Southern Arkansas. Thats my point, we go for the guys who will sign for cheap again over the guys that add value to the system. This is a fine philosophy if you are saving the money to make a splash elsewhere which remains to be seen.
-
Wilson and Cole are unlikely to sign at this point so there probably isnt a lot of sense in drafting them unless you plan to pay them top ten money.
-
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 11:40 AM) The Dodgers are taking a lot of LSU guys, who seem like they're going to be a b**** to sign. Dodgers are in cost saving mode, taking hard signs so that they dont have to pay them.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 11:31 AM) I'm having a hard time complaining about our draft so far. We didn't take Wilson, big deal! Neither has every other team right now, which makes me think he's made it obvious he won't be signing anywhere. Its not about Wilson as much as it is about improving, a bullpen guy isnt worth a second round pick. We tried that with Drew O'Neill who is still toiling away. I like the pick of Sale, though his delivery makes me a little apprehensive, but Petricka is not a guy that is going to improve the depth of the organization significantly. Minor league bullpen guys do not hold a lot of value when trying to improve a major league club.
-
Sox go for signability over talent while the other teams in the division do the opposite. Cleveland, KC and Detroit take Washington, Eibner and Castellanos and we get a bullpen guy.
-
I think Paxton would be pretty decent pick, first round talent, no leverage to use in not signing, and could move pretty quickly possibly making the rotation in mid 2011 or the beginning of 2012. Then in the third round you roll the dice on a guy with signability concerns. Not sure Paxton will still be on the board, but he is a pretty safe pick for a second round guy at best he is a mid-rotation guy at worst a LH set up man.

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 06:49 AM) Give me A.J. Cole. Very projectable high school righty. Already got three solid pitches that project as above-average pitches in the majors. Throws gas. He could be a front-line starter if all goes right, or back-end weapon in a worst-case scenario. Sure, what would it take to buy him out of college though? Top 10 money?

QUOTE (DirtySox @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 10:21 AM) Kevin Goldstein Kevin_Goldstein Sources indicate that Stetson Allie's price tag is $3 million 6 minutes ago via TweetDeck I would imagine that Wilsons is similar, anybody know for sure? We could sure use a power hitting OF prospect. There is a distinct lack of talent in the system, especially at the lower levels. I get spoiled here watching the Angels A team that trots out 5 first round picks, one of whom appears to be better than anyone in the Sox system.

QUOTE (DGSOXFan14 @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 08:21 AM) I sooooooo want the Sox to get Austin Wilson in round 2 but I doubt he makes it to us. But seriously, watching all the scouting videos as well as this one makes me drool to think we could have an outfield someday with Wilson and Mitchell: I think he will probably make it so us, I just dont think we will give him enough money to buy him out of Stanford.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 12:58 AM) Sox lucked out...both of them. I was hoping Castellanos or Ranuado would magically fall. Oh well. Wilson is intriguing...we pried TT from college, so perhaps another mega tools OF is in order. Wilson should be the target, but I doubt with the season we are having (attendance wise) there will not be money budgeted to buy him out of his commitment.

QUOTE (hogan873 @ Jun 8, 2010 -> 08:24 AM) So, looking at who could possibly get traded, who makes sense to trade, and who will not get traded, what does this team look like next year? I don't think the outfield changes, unless Quentin ends up being a DH...and in that case who takes over the outfield position? The infield will most likely have two changes, that being 1B and C. Of course we could be surprised, and Konerko re-signs for less money here. The starting pitching staff could look quite a bit different, depending on whether or not Buehrle and/or Floyd gets traded (I don't think Peavy is going anywhere). So, here's my guess: 1B - Viciedo or a FA 2B - Beckham 3B - Teahen SS - Alexei C - Flowers or Lucy LF - Pierre CF - Rios RF - Quentin or Danks2 or FA DH - Quentin or FA Pitching Peavy Danks ? ? ? I'll admit to not knowing much at all about our minor league system and absolutely nothing about the minors of some of the teams we will be making trades with. I honestly don't see a big change in the lineup, save for 1B and C, and that's iffy depending on Konerko. I hear different things about Viciedo, but I'm hoping we see him soon. I don't want to see Rios go anywhere, and I think Pierre is here to stay, too (and I don't really mind now as he seems to be trending back to his norm). The pitching to me is the biggest question mark. If Buehrle and/or Floyd get traded I imagine Hudson comes up. I'm not sure about Garcia...I'd be surprised if he finishes the year here and very surprised if he's here next year. Which is an even worse team than we have now. I am not sure why people think we can trade off the scraps and turn this around, but that is what has happened the last few years and gotten the team to this point. The only way to get a good value for some of these players is to take back a bad contract in return. If you are going to sell off pieces you might as well sell the pieces that have value rather than getting a return of pennies on the dollar.

Hopefully the Angels go out and get some good players to play for their A team here since half the team will probably be gone in the second half. I will sure miss watching Trout play.
-
Damn, I was hoping Folty would fall.

QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Jun 7, 2010 -> 07:38 PM) Also has him listed as a RHP. Scouting is not always complete. Yeah, I saw that, but the actual scouting report lists him as a LHP. Not that Keith Laws evaluations should carry a lot of weight as I think he is one of the biggest hacks in the scouting biz. I think the next pick will be a high ceiling position player a la Trayce Thompson.
-
Keith Law has Sale ranked as the #47 prospect in the draft.
-
QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jun 7, 2010 -> 07:26 PM) Cubs on the clock. Honestly they can go a ton of directions with their choice. No reason for them not to take Cox.
-
Dont know much about him, from the scouting reports I found quick, sounds a lot like Aaron Poreda with more movement and less velocity.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 7, 2010 -> 06:54 PM) Wow....there's going to be a big time player available I know....just like every year....and they'll pass.....just like every year....and I'll be pissed.....just like every year.... You would think I would learn by now.
-
QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jun 7, 2010 -> 06:51 PM) Once you get to guys in the middle of the pack, who knows what happens. I don't care if we draft him, but if its in the 1st 10 rounds, I'll be furious. Isnt he projected in rounds 5-10? If that is the case, he will be our comp pick at the end of the third round.
-
Either Cox or Grandal look to be there, draft them and if they dont sign we will have two picks in the top 15 next year.

I think MB makes sense to the Mets if KW is willing to take Perez and his $12M back he could probably get a pretty good prospect back. Trading PK, Linebrink, Andruw, and Jenks does not make this team any better. Not now, not next year, and not in five years. You have to trade something of value to get something back namely Danks and Thornton. AJP will be a Type A free agent at the end of the season and if you cant get two high quality prospects back you might as well hold on to him, Flowers needs the time in AAA apparently.
