  1. If you trade for Halladay without an extension you are also getting back two comp picks in the 2011 draft if he does not re-sign to help compensate for the prospects that it will take to land him. It is likely that either of those two picks will be better than most of the prospects that are being discussed being traded. With Halladay the team has a legit shot at two WS runs in the next two seasons.
  2. QUOTE (dbaho @ Jul 7, 2009 -> 09:30 AM) My guess is, Halladay ends up at a team like the Dodgers that have good young talent in their minors and are trying to win now. Halladay's the type of guy, with Billingsley and Kershaw that would make that team extremely hard to beat in a playoff series. The Dodgers would need to part with either Billingsley or Kershaw to make the deal according to Rosenthal, so they would not have all three. Viciendo isnt going anywhere, in part because he signed less than a year ago, I think Beckham is off limits as is most of the ML roster, other than that any of the prospects can be had in the right deal.
  3. QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Jul 6, 2009 -> 11:59 AM) Remember folks, when you make these trade suggestions, Kenny is not going to mortgage the future for the present. Whether that means dealing away some of our top prospects (unless there's another one in front of or behind that is considered a higher ceiling) or by trading for a rent-a-player. So, remember that when suggesting Haren, Halladay or Josh Johnson. When has KW not mortgaged the future for the present? There is a poster here called Kenny Hates Prospects for a reason. I remember KW saying a few years ago that if players had value in the minor leagues he wanted to find a way to translate that value to the big league club. KW has never been shy about trading away prospects, maybe he has turned over a new leaf, but his track record says anyone in the minors can be had in the right deal. Halladay will net Type A compensation after the 2010 season, Haren will cost a ton, but will solidify the rotation through 2013, Johnson is injury prone and has Boras as his agent so I dont see KW spending the farm on him. But KW will trade prospects if it lands the guy he covets.
  4. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jun 26, 2009 -> 02:12 PM) Finally, there was no reason to keep Miller in Charlotte. Once again, David Cook is denied. I have not followed the minor league system that closely to understand why there are so many calling for David Cook to get promoted. He is a 28 year old AA player batting .249, looks like he has some pop but so did Joe Borchard. I am not trying to flame, just curious.
  5. Hopper is a good fifth outfielder, AAAA guy, good baserunner and good range in the OF, bad pitch recognition to make contact and a below average arm, like Juan Pierre without the ability to slap the ball.
  6. Soto goes off on the Sox in the way that Aramis Ramirez did last year, then continues to suck the rest of the season. Beckham has the best offensive and worst defensive series thus far, Contreras comes back to earth, Sox go 1-2 on the road and 2-1 at home.
  7. QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Jun 16, 2009 -> 02:51 PM) Do nothing. When Wise comes up...sit down. Watch the pitcher. Watch Cox at third giving signs. See if you can see Hawk in the booth. Scope out the chicks. Get a beer...or nachos...or a brat. Go to the bathroom. Or better yet...why don't you cheer for the laundry and forget who's wearing it. I think this is the best solution.
  8. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 16, 2009 -> 02:30 PM) You don't boycott a team, because of one player. You instead boo that player, while rooting for the team. The player is a part of the team, so booing the player is not rooting for the team. It hurts the team in the way that you have a guy that is struggling and pressing and then you have the added pressure of the home fans booing him constantly, thats a lot of pressure to put on a guy that just isnt that good to begin with. The argument in this thread is that you are not booing the player, you are booing the organization and Ozzie for running him out there, you dont send those people a message by giving them your money. And it is never one player, it is always the player of the moment that takes the brunt of the criticism, Wise, Ramirez, Floyd, Lillibridge, Anderson, Fields and now wise again have all filled that role so far this season.
  9. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 16, 2009 -> 02:05 PM) What's the alternative? Cheer him for contributing nothing, and hoping KW gets the hint? Dont go to the games, nothing states the case of fan displeasure like an empty stadium. No one is saying that you have to cheer the guy, it just doesnt make a whole lot of sense to boo a band aid solution for being a band aid solution. Its like booing the grass for being green.
  10. QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ Jun 15, 2009 -> 08:30 PM) Booing sends a message, we pay good money to watch our Sox, and dont want to watch this garbage player on the field. Does it really matter what garbage player they stick out there? Thats what all of our CF options in the organization are at this time. Wise and Anderson both have flashes of being an average player, but basically they are both fourth OF's at best. So we should get rid of Wise so we can bring Lillibridge back up? There is no better than option than Wise right now and KW has had a lot of struggles with acquiring a legit CF. Danks2 is probably the best option in the organization but is a year from being ready. So were stuck in holding pattern, since we are in rebuilding mode there is no sense in wasting prospects to go out and acquire someone who will just be blocking a player like DanksII or Shelby next season. Wise is a placeholder along with Anderson until better internal options are ready.
  11. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 02:54 PM) Doing a full mock was waaaaaaaay too tough. I'm gonna end a 20. However, boot it, the Yankees will select Slade Heathcott at pick 29. 1.) Nationals - RHSP Stephen Strasburg, San Diego St. 2.) Mariners - OF/1B/2B Dustin Ackley, UNC 3.) Padres - OF Donovan Tate, Georgia HS 4.) Pirates - C Tony Sanchez, Boston College 5.) Orioles - RHSP Aaron Crow, Independant 6.) Giants - LHSP Tyler Matzek, California HS 7.) Braves - RHSP Zack Wheeler, Georgia HS 8.) Reds - LHSP Mike Minor, Vanderbilt 9.) Tigers - RHSP Shelby Miller, Texas HS 10.) Nationals - RHSP Chad Jenkins, Kennesaw St. 11.) Rockies - RHSP Alex White, UNC 12.) Royals - C Wil Myers, North Carolina HS 13.) Athletics - SS Grant Green, USC 14.) Rangers - LHSP Matthew Purke, Texas HS 15.) Indians - LHSP Rex Brothers, Lipscomb 16.) Diamondbacks - 3B/1B/LF Bobby Borchering, Florida HS 17.) Dianmondbacks - RHSP Mike Leake, Arizona St. 18.) Marlins - LHSP Chad James, Oklahoma HS 19.) Cardinals - LHSP Andy Oliver, Oklahoma St. 20.) Blue Jays - LHSP James Paxton, Kentucky The Tate to SD thing makes me scratch my head a little as it has been in a lot of the mocks in the last few days. SD is trying to save money everywhere and is ditching payroll as much as it can but they are willing to take the player who is going to command the second highest bonus in the draft? The only reasoning could be that they dont intend to sign him at all and roll the pick over to next season.
  12. Mitchell would be a decent comp pick, as he is really boom or bust. His only tools that are rated above average are his speed and fielding. The scouting report on ESPN says "His problem is at the plate, where his swing is long and his trigger -- a toe tap and big stride that closes his stance -- comes very late. When he squares something up, it takes off, but the squaring-up frequency isn't high enough and his pitch recognition isn't advanced enough yet to overcome the problems in his swing. " I am not sure who did the evaluation, but we do not need another Joe Borchard. Also in their latest mock Fuentes is going 14 to the Rangers and Brothers to the Sox.
  13. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 8, 2009 -> 09:33 AM) Once again how is every hitter's failure on Walker, but pitcher's failures are never on Cooper? Do you know the White Sox have given up 8 or more runs 11 times this year? That's more than they have been shutout. Its the players, not the coach. Change the coach and you will have the same result. Can someone please come up with a replacement when they said Walker must be fired? Move Harold off first and make him the hitting coach then hire someone else like Mookie Wilson to coach 1B.
  14. ESPN had this to day about the Sox "Sox have taken a college player in the first round every year this decade with the exception of 2001, when they selected RHP Kris Honel, who is now out of the organization. Good bet it's going to be a college kid again in '09." The funny thing is that in every mock draft they have had the Sox selecting a player out of HS. The Sox will likely continue the trend and take a college, Fuentes would be an option in the Comp round, but I dont think he will be there that long. I could see the Sox taking two CF's with their first two picks, a college player with a high floor and then taking a chance on a toolsy high school kid with a high ceiling and doing the same thing with SP's in the second round.
  15. They are trying to get him into college earlier, a lot of kids do that for all sorts of reasons, he wants a higher level of competition.
  16. Law has a new Mock up with the Sox taking Everett Williams "Also linked to Fuentes and the major college arms, including Arnett, Heckathorn and Minor; they had a lot of heat in at the SEC to witness Minor's command performance against LSU." Has Fuentes going to the Angels, Arnett to the Indians at 15, Brothers to the Cards, and Pollock to the Mariners at 27. He also has Scheppers slipping out of the first round, fwiw.
  17. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ May 26, 2009 -> 11:57 PM) I'm a cheap bastard so i haven't bought ESPN insider (and won't) Anyone know who Keith Law drafted for us in his mock? Mike Trout is who he has the Sox selecting, also does not have Donovan Tate being drafted in the first round. Keith Law is pretty clueless though, thats why he does this job instead of working in baseball still. I dont see the Sox taking a high school player in the first round unless it is someone like Tate where the talent level is elite. I think the Sox will look at Brett Jackson from Cal, above average fielder, his speed is his top tool, projects as an average hitter in the majors. Pollock going 16th to the D-backs and Brothers going 18th to the Marlins.
  18. 2-1 post lilli, but we have been outscored 26-14 since he left. Time to bring him back.
  19. As has been discussed, there was no one available worth any money to the Sox on the FA market. Hudson has been injury prone and would have cost the Sox their first round draft pick, couple that with blocking Getz and potentially Beckham, a deal there didnt make sense. Not many gold glove caliber 2B are going to take a job playing CF. The team spent on Viciendo, but other than that wanted to see what Fields could do after what he showed two seasons ago. There were two classes of pitching, elite which the Sox were priced out of with the likes of Sabathia, and junk heap which is where they got Colon from. Lowe was probably the most realistic target, but preferred the NL. Peavy is an ace, a top 5 pitcher in baseball. With him your starting pitching is set for years when combined with what is currently in house. It seems the formula that the Sox are trying to throw together is strong veteran pitching with a young core of athletic offensive players, trying to emulate TB somewhat.
  20. At the end of the year there are 5 spots that need to be filled Colons rotation spot, Dotels bullpen spot, RF, CF, and DH. Colon and Dotel will probably replaced internally (Marquez? and Link or?). Dye will likely fill one of those spots (DH) with his option, so we have about $14 MM to plug two other holes and possibly three if Fields doesnt pick it up at 3B. Danks2 is probably another full season away from being able to contribute as is Allen.
  21. Maybe add another year to the contract and hold the salary at $18MM for 2012,2013, and 2014? Still alot of money but the only way that we can reduce the annual amount is to add more time and guranteed money. An extension can always be worked out later as well to reduce the Sox obligation for 2013.
  22. QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 21, 2009 -> 09:11 AM) I'm hoping he has something else in store, because this deal doesnt look too likely if Peavy is having a bunch of other people communicate that he wants to go somewhere in the weakest division in baseball. The problem is at this point of the season there are very few teams willing to admit they are out of contention, and of those few teams there are not many impact pitchers available, so outside of Peavy a deal would have to wait for at least a month while the division races continue to shake out.
  23. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ May 21, 2009 -> 09:01 AM) I have a hard time believing Flowers would be traded too. We have absolutely no other catching prospects and AJ is getting up there in age. The guy i'm most worried about being included is Brandon Allen The Pads have Nick Hundley at C, so I am not sure that position is a priority. Allen would be behind Gonzalez and Kyle Blanks, so that doesnt make much sense for them either. They are week in the middle infield and the OF so I would expect any PTBNL to be from there. The Pads are trying to acquire Yuniesky Betancourt, so a 2B would be appear to be their most pressing need.
  24. I think this deal would be made with the long term in mind. Giles would be a placeholder in RF for the season and bat lead off. Peavy would solidify the top of the starting rotation with Buerhle and Danks and mean that we only are relying on the minors for one starter next season from Marquez, Hudson, and whomever else. I can see KW signing Abreu in the offseason to fill the gap in RF when Giles moves on/retires. So the deal sounds like Dye, Poreda, Richard, and Getz? Peavy and Giles ??
  25. QUOTE (BearSox @ May 11, 2009 -> 10:31 PM) Odds are he'll be gone in the top 5-10. Thanks, I wasnt sure how much his football commitment would be a deterrent.
