They reportedly lost $28M in 2023 with a payroll about $100M more expensive than where they’re at right now. So if everything else remained the same outside of payroll they would stand to make ~$70M in 2025. BUT…they also lowered ticket prices this season, attendance will be down significantly compared to 2023, fixed costs presumably have increased slightly since then due to inflation, and presumably the tv revenue is down significantly since 2023. So, yea, I don’t know if a “huge” profit is a sure thing even with a payroll in the mid 60s.

That’s not how it works. If the board decides they need to push payroll low enough to ensure positive cash flow from operations this year then that’s what they’re going to do.

Or board pressure to recoup part of their operating losses since 2019…

And sadly, we could only dream of this type of return for Robert now…

And if Jerry is really that hard up for cash, the decision to trade him before the season might not be a baseball decision alone but one made just to move the contract off the books.

Think I’ll save the money, like Jerry likes to, and take them to a few Chicago Dogs games again instead. Much closer to home and easier to get to while saving a lot of money with great seats to watch a game.

I’ve conceded that they will never be a real contender as long as Jerry owns the team so I’m not worried about future hypotheticals. Under that premise, at least give me a few players my kids can cheer for today and a non embarrassing mlb product.

#1 it’s not “my” money #2 they’d still be running a team payroll well below league average even after those signings #3 70+ wins led by a franchise player that my kids could actually feel not embarrassed to wear his jersey is a lot better than whatever they’re going to put out there this season and next

And that’s why you don’t sign him only. If you’re going to lose the 2nd round pick anyways, go out and sign Alonso and Pivetta as well. The longer these guys push into this year unsigned the much more likely they are to sign for reasonable contracts.

Santander is cheaper than Benintendi in today’s dollars due to the deferrals. Benintendi’s contract if signed today would be worth ~$80M adjusted for inflation. Neither plays good defense but at least Santander can pretend to play RF for a couple years unlike Benintendi and has more power.
