QUOTE(JimH @ Feb 2, 2005 -> 03:37 AM) You may be right, here is my take. WGN is pretty damned connected to all things Cub. If it's two years $20M guaranteed we have a problem. That may supercede a Detroit offer which may be longer in years but has multiple strings attached ala the Ivan Rodriguez deal. Plus we know Ordonez supposedly wants to play in Chicago ... on his own terms. As for the Mets, they are known to dive in hard and fast but they still have a very crowded OF situation, seems they cannot move either Cameron or Floyd. It's possible they move Cameron later but let's remember he is pricey too which limits his possible destinations. This is starting to fall in line, in a manner I don't like. Cubs free up $$ from Sosa even though they have to pay a big chunk. Spend some on Burnitz, there's still some left over apparantly or the Trib Tower authorized more payroll. I have the Ordonez bobble heads out, ready to drill with my bat. Again I do not like the way this is moving. Until I hear from another source, there is still a chance. I turned on wgn by accident as I thought it was the score. started listening and walla its there. then started scanning other stations and the internet and nothing, so who knows.

QUOTE(JimH @ Feb 2, 2005 -> 03:20 AM) Any time the Mets are ready to make their move, that'd be just fine with me. It would not shock me that somehow Boras takes the Cubs offer and paints it as the best possible situation for Ordonez. jim, nobody else has reported this, it was on the sportscenter show with Dave Kaplan and tom waddle. If its true you would think the srore or ESPN would have picked this up tonight. who knows.lets hope the Mets dive in tonight!

WGN Radio is currently reporting that the Cubs offered Maggs a 2 year 20 million contract tonight. Burnitz will be signed after Sosa signs his contract.

QUOTE(AirScott @ Feb 1, 2005 -> 08:55 PM) this wouldn't make sense. Crede is just coming off a bad year, he'll give us .280-25-85. Weaver is inconsistent, Contreras is inconsistent. Weaver doesn't have Contreras' stuff, so there's no way this trade could go through. Doesn't matter the Dodgers receive the rights to this guy today. its over unless they trade him to the sox for crede, which won't happen.

QUOTE(Yossarian @ Feb 1, 2005 -> 07:25 PM) They'll be there in large numbers loud, drunk, boisterous and obnoxious. Half won't know the score or the inning at any given time, and many will try to goad others around them into a fight. It will be reported on ESPN and everyone will say the Cell is a dangerous place and Sox fans all live in the same trailer next to the Ligues. how is this any different than half price night at the cell?

QUOTE(quickman @ Jan 30, 2005 -> 10:02 PM) Ok here is the latest on the Mets Entering the fray. Don't shoot the messenger. Ny media (660 the fan- Mets baseball host Ed Coleman) has just announced that Mets GM Omar Minaya has his eyes set on Magglio and will outbid any team to get him. He (coleman) feels that Magglio's relationship with ex Whitesox manager, Manuel, whom he had an excellent relationship with will help in the recruiting. The Fan is saying that the Mets are now the heavy favorties to land Magglio Ordonez Coleman said that the Mets GM has had his eyes set on Ordonez since he got the job. Mets GM is going to see the workout this week with teams doctors. Coleman also said that the Mets have the money to outbid Detroit. He also said that the Cubs and Rangers were not going to be serious players for Maggs. Last thing he stated was that Mets GM said to him that he would be willing to go 12 mil a year gauranteed with incentives that could take the contract to as high as 14-15 mil a year but will only be willing to go 5 years max. This now from todays Detriot free Press. kind of supports what I stated above over the weekend. That would appear to leave the Cubs as the Tigers' main rival, with the New York Mets a possibility -- especially if they can free up some salary through a trade. "I think the Mets are about to get knee-deep in this thing now," a source familiar with the situation said Monday.

QUOTE(JimH @ Feb 1, 2005 -> 04:24 PM) I would not have a promo but I would try to subtlely market to Cub fans. Let them come and boo him, cheer him, whatever ... and let them add to the White Sox bottom line. The press will take care of this for us. As a joke why note have a Sosa bobblehead day, in an oriole uniform.
-
QUOTE(robinventura23 @ Feb 1, 2005 -> 03:38 PM) How about no promotion at all? Except for the usual boos and chants, we don't need to feed his ego anymore. Agreed. Lets not immortalize Sosa

QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Feb 1, 2005 -> 01:39 AM) Put me down for yes. They got it done with Pudge (which was a surprise to most) & I think they'll get it done here. They'll pony up the 5th year as a player-team option based on ab's the previous 4 yrs. From a Sox fan's perspective there's more sweet than sour. The sour is we have to pitch against him. The sweet is he can help the Tigs beat our biggest 05 rivals (Cle, Min). Staying in the div means we can keep a close eye on his progress. There's no need to hate him. We knew from the moment he became a BorASS client he was a short-timer. you could be right! The score is reporting that the Cubs will sign burnitz as early as tommorrow. There you go. Eat s*** Boras.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Feb 1, 2005 -> 04:06 AM) Still, though... If his pitches were so straight, wouldn't he have gotten lit up in AAA too? I'm not trying to compare the majors to AAA, but would Felix have gotten hit a little harder at Charlotte? I mean -- his K/BB ratio was sick -- and in a good size of starts, too. I'll just say this. I realize his stuff isn't as electric as one would like. But -- he has good control. And I know that didn't show that in the majors, but he's got control. When you're able to spot a 91 MPH fastball where you want it, that's a huge difference. He also has a real good changeup, too. If a guy can spot his low-90s fastball, as well as change speeds good enough on his change (which is what I happen to believe Felix did at Charlotte), he can start... And Jim, I know you said he doesn't like to throw inside. I know this isn't going to really represent my argument well, because I'm basically picking-and-choosing what backs up my argument -- but -- I was the Oakland game sometime in late August, early September. IIRC, Felix got hit pretty hard the first three innings. And then -- for God-knows what happened, but something clicked. I commented to my brother about it, but he was throwing up and in, backing the hitters off the plate, throwing low and away, and hitters started looking silly up there. I saw a totally different pitcher up there, one throwing with confidence, one throwing really, really well. And, I was in the LF/CF bleachers, so I had a real good look at his pitch location. I'm not saying Felix is going to end up amounting to an ace or even a two in this league, but honest to God, I believe the kid can be a good three/four -- and I'd tell you that if I was looking you straight in the eyes, believe it or not... you present good points, and I am sure he is in the mix. get more arms they drop like flies. We will see on Diaz. i am not impressed by him, The more people see him the more they will catch him. Anyway, lets see how this plays out. Stick to your guns, you like the guy and you make some good points. Nice feedback. -

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Feb 1, 2005 -> 03:56 AM) Maybe it's just me, but I'd much rather have Podsednik steal 40 bases and have a .360 OBP than steal 70 bases and have a .330 OBP... me too!!!!!!!!! -

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Feb 1, 2005 -> 03:52 AM) Quick, I know I'm a little late on this -- and I'm pretty sure you'll disagree on this with me, but I'm pretty confident that Diaz can fill in for a short period of time and spot start. He's proven everything he can at AAA, he's right on the edge as far as becoming a fifth starter in the MLB. I know a lot of people like him, I personally don't. He better not be the best we have if we are making a run for the division. We fell short last year because of injury and the number 5 slot. Although we have a better 1-5 if injury occurs we could be in trouble again. The very last thing I want to see is Diaz pitching against the cubs again at wrigley. people have now seen him pitch. Word is getting out that he has two pitches, both straight. Anyway, my point is to bring in a few more arms to minor league contracts in case something happens. Surely that would not be a bad thing. -

QUOTE(AirScott @ Feb 1, 2005 -> 03:20 AM) you got to remember that Podsednik isn't replacing Lee, he's really replacing Harris. the low .300 OBP is bad, but the 70 steals is good, and he'll score some runs. I'm optimistic about Everett, they say he's in great shape and Dye should be healed. losing Jose Valentin is the biggest addition by subtraction there ever was. seriously, he was a low .200s hitter that couldn't field and hit 30 HRs in a home run park. Interesting angle. Where are all these new people coming from? Have fun this is a great site. -

QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Feb 1, 2005 -> 02:13 AM) On average there are usually 50 torch nights amongst a rotation. Starters numbers are always fascinating. A good rotation will produce betw 70-75 wins & 45-50 torch nights. That leaves only 37 bubble games. That's why no team can make it to the post-season w/out a solid bullpen. A bullpen needs to win 20-25 of the 37 to have a good shot. If your bullpen loses more than 15 gms kiss the post-season goodbye. Here's what Neyer should have asked: 1) Do the Sox have a rotation capable of winning 70-75 games? How do you answer this? You look at the number of starts they've had in the past 3 yrs where they have surrendered 3R or less. That usually equates to a win. Numbers wise the Sox did not have that kind of rotation last year. They do this year. 2) Do the Sox have a bullpen capable of winning 20-25 games? They didn't last year but they did this year. 3) How much offense did they lose? Again about 2 doz runs & 2 doz rbi. There is still plenty of power, but now there is plenty of pressure to go along with it. We essentially bartered 2 doz R, 2 doz RBI for 70SB. It should be exciting. Can't wait for the open of ST. There is a new show on TV called Numbers. You would love it.Its all about numbers. Right up your alley. -

QUOTE(JimH @ Feb 1, 2005 -> 02:04 AM) I would love to see your crystal ball where it shows no down time from 4 starters, I like it And of course you are right by naming Diaz and Stewart ... we don't know about Grilli although I suspect he will be here on a minor league deal. Ozzie wants Cotts in the pen. Diaz and Stewart were torched for the most part, Grilli was all over the map with control. I think they will try to do better and take the same approach as last year when they tried to bring in guys like Person and Meche. Meche? -

QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Feb 1, 2005 -> 01:58 AM) I strongly disagree. Both Vizcaino & Hermanson have enough starts under their belt to be spot starters in the event El-D goes down. I do not see major downtime coming from Marky B, Freddy G, Jose, or Jon. If you don't want to go that route then you still have arms at AAA & AA who can step in & perform no worse than 04 (Cotts, Diaz, Grili, & Stew). As for the bats, this might be the most balanced lineup the Sox have had in KW's tenure as GM. The easiest out right now figures to be Crede & we all have seen the good Crede & bad Crede. That means higher pitch counts & more stress on most pitchers in the AL when facing the '05 Sox. Those are the intangibles that can & usually do equal more wins. The more pressure you can put on a team the more likely they are to crack. Jugger, i agree we can do alot of things but being able to go to the minors would be the best answer rather than disrupting your best asset this year(the pen). The sox did not get better with there starting pitching in the minors. There is still time. Cotts needs confidence, diaz, is spotty at best. We jsut need an upgrade, because we simply can't develop guys fast enough. -

QUOTE(SEALgep @ Feb 1, 2005 -> 01:53 AM) Why can't Hermanson spot start if needed? He can my point is we have nobody that will be effective. I am not down on hermansen but he has a role, and he needs to do that role. We are just not deep enough for starting pitching even in the minors. that was proved last year, and we didn't get better. In fact you can make a point that the closest thing we had to a fifth was just let go. I know there are many that like diaz but he isn't the answer if contraas or someone else goes down for two or three turns. That's my point. not that hermansen couldn't step in. -

QUOTE(JimH @ Feb 1, 2005 -> 01:45 AM) If that's the case, you are like Swiss Miss. I have said all along they need starting pitching depth. Not just on the big league staff but at AAA. Stack that squad with guys who are bouncing back or need a showcase. As it stands right now, they had Grilli as insurance and now that's up in the air. I don't like Diaz for the simple reason he appears reluctant to throw inside and his stuff is straight as an arrow. They need to bring in a few starting pitching candidates to camp, I recall having this convo with you a few weeks ago. Well you pulled a quote and I thought you had a problem. It appears not. We are in complete agreement as usual
