QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Mar 12, 2006 -> 08:15 PM) Now if the Sox are going to trade for another bullpen guy at the end of ST, here are some possibilities; Scott Williamson - Said he would like to close, could still have that oppurtunity here if Jenks falters. Dunno if the Cubs would deal with us though. Ryan Wagner - Really fallen out of favor in Cinci. Depends how Krivsky likes him. Danny Graves - Doubtful to make Cleveland bullpen competiting with 3 other guys for 1 spot. Given up 1 unearned run in his last 4IP. Zach Day - Now if you wanted to move B-Mac into a setup role, if you needed a long man, Day could be your guy. Excellent groundball pitcher IIRC, but has had arm issues. Brian Shackleford - A lefty from Cinci. Better against righties, and had some good numbers last season with a 2.43 ERA in 37 games. i too was thinking about Graves. He would need to be released, highly doubt the tribe trades him to us.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Mar 12, 2006 -> 07:33 PM) On the Soxtalk Podcast I said that for this team to succeed and for the pen to be better than expected, everyone will have to stay healthy, but most importantly Bmac will have to assert himself in as the setup man along with Cotts. I think he's capable, but Politte wasn't as strong in the 2nd half and Hermy has to prove to me he's healthy. If Hermy's healthy he won't be as good as he was last season, but he'll be solid. This team is still one arm short to open spring and it will need another arm around the deadline. i completely agree and I think we will need to get another arm from another team. Nobody in our farm looks like they can take on a major bullpen role.We Will get someone.

QUOTE(fathom @ Mar 12, 2006 -> 08:27 PM) BTW, I mentioned this yesterday, but I think McCarthy is better suited for starting than relieving. I'll be interested in seeing how his changeup is coming out of the pen. thats absolutely correct, Mcarthy is not a relief pitcher, which makes our bullpen even more of a concern.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Mar 12, 2006 -> 08:26 PM) I've actually been more impressed by some of the lefties than I have been with the righties like Hermanson, Redding, and Tracey. JimH is absolutely correct in his analysis of what we need, who might be willing to trade, and what we'll have to offer. Good to see you around Jim. He is only around because i came out to play tonight. otherwise you boys are on your own. The lefties are not the problem right now. The extra reliever was always a hole and right now a deep concern.

No HD that sucks

vasquez pitching tonight

QUOTE(JimH @ Mar 12, 2006 -> 08:01 PM) Right, like Miles and Uribe for instance. It's all about scouting and certain playes becoming available at certain times. They have a roster crunch over there with lots of pitchers in camp and could use a young cheap masher. Anyways, plenty of time left in spring, let's see how it plays out. Yea they are filled with lots of those.. stop yourself

QUOTE(JimH @ Mar 12, 2006 -> 07:54 PM) You might be surprised, the two org's know each other really well. I know we can give them our s***ty minor league players and they can give us their s***ty major league players.

QUOTE(JimH @ Mar 12, 2006 -> 07:48 PM) Colorado Rockies is my guess. they have lots of pitching
-
QUOTE(JimH @ Mar 12, 2006 -> 07:46 PM) Also on the topic of these lefties, what you look for up to this point in spring is how well they're throwing the ball. Are they throwing strikes, are they building velocity, etc. Each of Reynoso, Almanza, and Lopez are throwing the ball well. I'm not too concerned with the actual results at this point and I suspect Guillen isn't either. That's why Hermanson's situation is worrisome though. He's not throwing well. Neither is Redding. I agree on the lefties, you can hide them because they are one batter pitchers although I think each would piss in there pants when hafner is up. Redding sucks, hermanson will be on and off all year, they need another arm and need one fast. I say kidnap one of these cuban guys.

QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Mar 12, 2006 -> 07:43 PM) I don't see that happening. KW would let Contreras leave via free agency and throw McCarthy into the rotation before he would sign Contreras and trade McCarthy. KW has all but stated that McCarthy is untradeable in his eyes. I believe chris young was at the top of his list also, and he is gone. Anyone is tradeable.

QUOTE(JimH @ Mar 12, 2006 -> 07:41 PM) Scott Williamson is supposedly not available at this time, the Cubs like what they're seeing from him. All 30 teams are looking for a better bullpen but remember the Sox have a few chips to trade. I'm not talking about trading pitching, Contreras has looked great this spring. The White Sox need one guy for now. They need a hard throwing RH who throws strikes and can go 2 innings. I agree, there will be a few available shortly. As for a 2nd lefty they'll go with someone they have (Lopez, Almanza, Reynoso), there aren't many (or any) lefties available. Watch for Gload or Borchard to get moved, I still believe they're not done tweaking this team yet. It is still fairly early in spring but Owens doesn't look ready to me, Borchard has not impressed, and though Gload can hit a bullpen arm is a more pressing need. I smell a trade ... I see a bullpen arm coming in and I think they'll go outside for the last OF spot. Just my opinion. Well gload and borchard suck, so I don't expect much of a pitcher in return. Owens is a better chip to trade.
-
PS I am mad as hell and surpirsed that KW didn't plan well for this bullpen. He has everything else covered, but the bullpen was key last year. It seems, he thought some of his minor league pitchers could make up for the holes, which they cannot.

QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Mar 12, 2006 -> 07:37 PM) This freightens me. When Contreras' name was associated with Baltimore and the Dodgers, their fans were insisting McCarthy replaces him. McCarthy could probably land us a good package, but Williams shouldn't be forced to trade him. For his potential/salary, he's too valuable to this ballclub. Unless it's for the offensive equivalent of him, Brandon stays. If the sox sign contraras, which is a long shot, they will trade Mcarthy. Mcarthy is a starter not a reliever. this is why it was so important for hermanson to be healthy. There is no assurance that Mcarthy will pitch well out of the pen. They need a relief pitcher through trade. its a must. If clemons doesn't come back to the astros, then look for houston to get agressive on contraras.

he should have cause he sucks. redding also played his way out of contention. there is nobody ready in minor league system to pitch. its ashame.

QUOTE(jphat007 @ Mar 12, 2006 -> 07:17 PM) I can't believe that we would trade Contreras, who will likely be one of our best starters this year, especially because he is throwing strikes, just because we are worried about the 4 or 5th guy coming out of our pen. I think KW is going to try to get by in the first couple of months with Cotts, Jenks, Politte, Bmac, Hermy?/Tracey (yuck)/other minor leaguer and our second lefty, then trade a month or two in if we need it. Tracey sucks as well as our other minor league pitchers. Lets see who he gets in the next week or two. I think a trade will be made. Not contraras yet. Also, I am not starting a new conversation, but there are only a few ways to go with contraras. 1) trade him sometime this year. 2) keep him and take a chance on losing him 3) sign him soon. then trade mcarthy. Think about it, either would bring a stud relief pitcher and maybe another minor league guy. again not trying to start anything. I say keep them both if you can get anotehr decent relief pitcher.

QUOTE(jphat007 @ Mar 12, 2006 -> 07:09 PM) I was saying KW had to ask for a little extra by asking JR for a little extra money. I thought it was a great deal. But stealing a backup SS is much easier than stealing even a mediocre bullpen guy. They are treasured in this league. I think that whole askign for extra money is for the press. JR will not stand in the way of getting a bullpen guy to save a couple million. I justt can't see it.Also remember contraras is still a pawn to trade.

QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Mar 12, 2006 -> 07:04 PM) What irritates me is how the Sox always seem to be in a position where they're the team overpaying. Why can't someone offer us a substantial package for once? When it seems we have a surplus of talent, whether it's offense or pitching, there's never a Kenny Williams out there willing to overpay. Or even offer fair value. Sox never seem to be in a good position to trade talent. I just want one Liriano/Nathan trade for our club. Just one. It would be great if some team desparate for starting pitching looked at Contreras and overpayed. One which made the possibility of injuries to our starting pitchers easy to overlook. You know, if you followed my posts I think our minor league system sucks, so I don't think they have overpaid especailly if it gets us to the world series. All these guys are un proven. We won the World series, thats the goal always, who cares about minor league players. We are in a positioon to win NOW not later, there will be atime when they blow this thing up and start over again, its not this year or next year, our pitching is too good. He will find someone.

QUOTE(jphat007 @ Mar 12, 2006 -> 06:58 PM) I don't know if 1) Anybody would want to give up a decent reliever at all, especiallly to a WS contender like us 2)it could be acquired within reasonable means. KW had to ask for the little extra to sign Cintron. I'm not sure he could get much more and it would take more than the 1.6 million to get a decent bullpen guy. I'm just saying don't count on any guy with an ERA in the 3s of late. More like a flyer on a guy with a 5+ ERA. I respectfully disagree, KW stole cintron. "the Baj" sucked and will never be as good as he was in the minors. KW is targeting people already, hell I would go and get williamson off the cubs. there will be players and yes we will over pay by giving a couple of guys who will never make it anyway. If only borchard was decent, he would be one to make a trade.KW put himself in this situation he will get himself out. if he doesn't it will cost him the division.
-
look I too want to jump off a bridge too, but many teams will make cuts, players will become available, and KW will make a trade even if he has to over pay. Who the hell cares about overpaying anyway. get the player who can pitch in the pen. we are two relievers away from winning this thing again, i don't think kw will sit tight. We will not go into the year two arms down in the pen.

QUOTE(sin city sox fan @ Mar 9, 2006 -> 12:39 PM) Does this mean I could see the Sox take BP at the games up north? Is that standard procedure throughout the cactus league? If so, what's a good time to catch that? Sin I will be there as well. I am coming in on saturday of next week and will attend the brewers away game on Sunday then back to tucson. I go every year. I stay in the catalinas and hang out around there, but there are good bars in tucson. A few: The shanty- great patio- pretty crowded, probably one of the better bars. O'Malleys- Good bar- lots of tv's and music. Frog and firkin- English pub Nimbus brewery- Micro brew pub The Shelter- Cool bar the place was a former bomb shelter. Wildcat house- College bar. Drink as much and puke on the floor bar. Personally I will be at the flying V bar at the ventanna canyon resort. Where rich good looking women hang out!

QUOTE(White Sox Josh @ Mar 8, 2006 -> 10:23 PM) what are you talking about? He deserved a chance and he looked very good in his 1 inning of work. He was scheduled for 2 or 3 more games however he never got into any of them thanks to Ozzie not willing to giv ehim a chance. Actually I know I already answered you on this and I certainly don't want to debate a Triple A player, but the facts are simple. The sox don't think he can make it, they optioned him which means that all the other teams in the league don't care to much for him either. he is getting old and quite frankly I am tired of hearing about how great this guy is. He is not good. Its really just a fact. If he was this year would be his year. Thats probably a better explanation than my last post. In essence I am not sure why people on this board fall in love with Minor league players. Most suck, and end up selling insurance.
