  1. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Mar 21, 2008 -> 12:29 PM) And if that was truly the case then no amount of bombs would have forced a surrender and we'd have had to kill every last person in the country. It makes for good moral justification to flatly state that japan never would have surrendered, but there is a lot of evidence suggesting that wasn't the case. The Japanese believed in the Busido Code of the Samurai (http://www.bigbearacademy.com/bushido-code.html). They weren't going to surrender unless something really big happened, and that was Fat Boy and Little Man. So to say that Japan would have eventually surrendered and that the Bombs were unnecessary, IMO, is false. Our options were either invade Japan and lose hundreds of thousands of American soldiers in the process, or bomb them. I don't know about you, but I'd choice to bomb them over invade them any day. And it's not like we dropped the bombs on them without any warning.
  2. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Mar 21, 2008 -> 12:26 PM) And where exactly would these bombs have come from? Manhattan Project only developed the 3 bombs that had already been detonated. The fourth atomic bomb wasn't tested until nearly a year later. they would have made more. We weren't going to invade Japan because the amount of lives it would cost would be way too high. Here is a nice little article about Japanese code and how you should never surrender: http://history1900s.about.com/od/worldwari...ldiersurr_2.htm
  3. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Mar 21, 2008 -> 11:28 AM) Absolutely, and many scholars feel neither was necessary and Japan was already days or weeks away from surrender. But, wtf, if you're spending $2 billion (that's $23 billion of today's crappy dollars) and employing 130,000 people to build some bombs, you're sure as $hit going to use them to bomb somebody. Japan would have never surrender. It is Japan code to never surrender and to die is better then surrending. If you surrendered, your name would become a disgrace. Japan would have not surrended if not for the bombings. Like I said in a previous post, it would have cost the lives of at least half a million U.S. Soldiers trying to invade Japan. Hell, I bet if we only bombed Hiroshima, they still wouldn't have surrendered. And, it's not like we didn't give them warnings. We told them, we have this weapon and we will use it on you if you do not surrender. Even before bombing the cities, the U.S. warned all them to leave and get away. They didn't listen. And there was a difference of 3 days between the two bombs. I mean really, after the first one they should have surrendered right away. But it was against their code.
  4. QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Mar 21, 2008 -> 11:13 AM) Can you really use Hiroshima and Nagasaki as an argument? Those acts were done to bring a country to it's knees that just would not stop, even though it was obvious the war was lost. It was that act that finally ended WWII. That was not terrorism, that was war. If we didn't bomb Japan, we would have lost at least half a million soldiers, if not more, trying to invade Japan. We gave them all the warning in the world, but they brushed it off thinking there is no way we'd bomb them. If they didn't surrender after Nagasaki, there would have been another bomb dropped, and if they still refused, another one, and so on. You are completely correct, that was not terrorism, but war.
  5. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 20, 2008 -> 03:07 PM) He may have looked healthy, but his back is bothering him enough that they're sending him for an MRI on it. That worries me. I stand corrected, as now he is being reported to be out 4-6 weeks. Well, he looked healthy, but like you said, he wasn't. Damn shame to.
  6. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 20, 2008 -> 02:35 PM) McCain +7 over Obama and +10 over Hillary http://rasmussenreports.com/public_content...l_tracking_poll And people said the story about Obama's nutjob anti-american pastor wouldn't effect him at all...
  7. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 20, 2008 -> 11:09 AM) I'm starting to like the concept more & more, I just wish Danny would get healthy first. I don't want him up in the big leagues trying to catch up with a Verlander fastball with a bad back. Richar looks healthy to me. He's been playing good D with a lot of range. Just a couple days ago, he made a great sliding catch on a shallow flyball in no-mans land. And he has looked real good at the plate. His bat is a little slow now, but in a few days I predict to see him tearing the cover off the ball.
  8. It should be Richar & Ramirez. From what I've seen this spring (and a lot of last year w/ Richar), they are both better then Uribe. I've said this in a couple of other threads, but Richar and Ramirez should platoon and Ramirez should get playing time in CF/LF/SS as well.
  9. Juan Uribe is a waste of 4.5 million dollars on or off the team. Hell, we might be better off paying him 4.5 million to be off the team, because Ramirez is already 100x better then Uribe and should be the starting 2B (with Richar platooning, and Ramirez getting playing time in CF/LF/SS as well).
  10. Not surprised Crede is going to start opening day. This organization is filled with stupid.
  11. QUOTE(bmags @ Mar 18, 2008 -> 11:25 PM) do you read the Times to even know? Do you watch these channels? MSNBC, CNN, even local news was covering this and HAVE been covering Wright for upwards of a year. Nobody is forcing anybodys hand just cause they have to because of fox's ratings. First you thought only Fox was covering this, then you learned ABC scooped it (also AP had it on our wire's on maybe even Wed. last week) and now you nicely include ABC in covering it. Did you even read my posts? QUOTE(BearSox @ Mar 15, 2008 -> 10:29 PM) This can be crippling to Obama's campaign whether you agree or not. However, since pretty much 80% of the media is in the tank for Obama, he might get away with this. Funny that CBS, CNN, and NBC haven't mentioned anything about this and ABC maybe spent 5 minutes on this subject. Whatever happened to the good old days when journalism was suppossed to be unbiased? Funny, that is what I just mentioned in my last post to you. On Thursday ABC covered it, but not very much and showed only a little of the video. QUOTE(BearSox @ Mar 16, 2008 -> 10:21 AM) when the story first came out, Thursday I believe it was, Fox was the only one to show it. CNN didn't do anything on it, and neither did CBS or NBC. Now, they kinda have to do it because it has gotten so big. But it is obvious the majority of the media is in the tank for Obama. Not only on television but also in the newspapers. The Chicago Sun Times, the New York Time, etc. I'm not saying Fox isn't unbiased, because they are in favor of McCain and the Republicans, but at least they will report all the news. Fox's bias for Republicans is nothing compared to the majoirty of the media's bias and love for Obama/Democrats. Do you see me dening ABC here? Seriously, put down the kool-aid.
  12. QUOTE(YASNY @ Mar 18, 2008 -> 11:20 PM) Yet in just about every sport, it's defence that wins championships. In baseball, it's pitching. But pitching is a big part of defence. Pitching always comes first. However if it comes between an average defender but great hitter or a great defender but average hitter, it'd be stupid to take the defender over the hitter. No matter how good you are defensively, (if you are good offensively) you can always drive in more runs then you can save, by a wide margin.
  13. QUOTE(hammerhead johnson @ Mar 18, 2008 -> 11:22 PM) You're trying to tell me that he's inconsistent, but a 0.89 WHIP and a .198 BAA over the course of an entire season tell me otherwise. And as I indicated before, when you smash people in those categories, along with K per 9IP, your ERA is gonna be outstanding by default. For every Sox fan that has Octavio Dotel finishing better in all statistical categories besides saves (your precise words), there are about 50,000 that would completely dismiss that possibility. That's all I'm saying. I said better season statistically. When did a better season statistically automatically become every single stat? Jenks had a great season last year, no one is dening that. Most of those great stats came with his great second half however. I have watched Jenks his whole career, so one season isn't going to change my opinion of him. I see him getting 40(+) saves, around a 3 ERA, and a 1.15(+/-) WHIP. I don't think it's too far fetched to think someone, especially a reliever can put up a better ERA, or WHIP, or whatever then Jenks can.
  14. QUOTE(bmags @ Mar 18, 2008 -> 10:57 PM) Acting like Fox news was the only network that covered Wright is so absurd that I don't need to provide examples, it was the biggest story of the weekend and every network was playing the same soundclip from youtube ad nauseum. On Thursday only two news stations reported this. It was Fox's main story and then ABC had it as a secondary story, if that, for about 5 minutes. But since Fox news is the most watched cable news station, and the other stations were losing ratings, they had to put the story on. Before Friday however, Fox was really the only station talking about this. ABC a little, but that was it. And just to throw this out there, there was a survey done on journalists, and only 8% said they were conservative. So that means 92% of the media is either left wing or moderate. So it shouldn't surprise anyone if only one station will actually want to get this news out there. Also, I find it HI-larious that the New York Times have buried this story, but yet, McCain's "relationship with a lobbyist" was a front page story. At least 80% of the media is clearly biased towards dems and want Obama to win. And if you don't realize that, put down the kool-aid.
  15. QUOTE(kjshoe04 @ Mar 18, 2008 -> 11:02 PM) But can he put on the same kind of show in BP? While I know this post is mainly sarcasm from the BS Hawk and Walker were talking about on Sunday about Uribe, I'd say Ramirez can put on a much better show during BP.
  16. QUOTE(hammerhead johnson @ Mar 17, 2008 -> 11:58 PM) We're talking about the same Bobby Jenks that retired 41 consecutive batters last year, yeah? Didn't he have a 0.89 WHIP and .198 BAA? The scary thing is that he ain't even peaking yet. If you look at his 2007 strikeout ratio, he underachieved big time. He had less than 8 strikeouts per 9 IP. He should be in the 10 range this year. I don't know, man. The guy looks like an elite closer to me. A top 10 reliever in the MLB, no doubt. Did you not read the part where I said he can be dominant? Jenks can be dominant at times, but then again he can be s***. We saw this last year where at one point he couldn't get anyone on the Orioles out, but then had a dominant streak. If Jenks isn't getting his fastball above at least 96 or 97, he turns from a top of the line closer to a finesse pitcher. When your fastball is as straight as Jenks, you either need to blow it by hitters or locate it perfectly. Jenks does look fatter this season though, and that might be a good think. Jenks' best fastball came when he was at his heaviest. Perhaps when he was that big he had a perfect arm slot that helped him add a couple mph. However, when he lost weight he might have lost that slot. And, I just realized the question asked who will have the best ERA, and that could be anyone, and I would bet it would be Dotel if he's healthy.
  17. QUOTE(bmags @ Mar 17, 2008 -> 01:01 PM) man the inaccuracies of this post please list some. Just saying something but then not pointing anything is not a good way to prove a point.
  18. RSV2 is awesome. The online compared to RSV1 is sooo much better. I highly recommend it.
  19. I'd say he's already better then Uribe.
  20. I always say offense first, but our other options in CF are so bad right now that Anderson kinda has to be the starting CF.
  21. QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Mar 18, 2008 -> 12:11 AM) Why? He's having a great spring when he's in the lineup. Anderson's having a great spring too - would you discount his numbers like you're discounting Owens'? Great spring my ass. His horrible defense to go along with his noodle arm has cost us more runs then he has scored this spring. Plus, I think it's safe to say my dog might have a better swing then Owens. He has looked terrible at bat this spring. He accidently got a triple on sunday, and today he probably got some weak singles somewhere, but he did K twice.
  22. I'm getting Rainbow Six Vegas 2 tomorrow... sweet!
  23. Richar has a lot of catching up to do, but I have liked what I've seen these past two days. He didn't get any hits today except for that bunt, but he had a couple real good AB's. Plus, his defense is still superb. I think he is catching up and fast. I'd like to see Richar start at 2B. Have Ramirez just start at Charlotte at 2B, and have Uribe platoon with Richar and sub Cabrera until we can finally dump Uribe and replace him with Ramirez. My ideal opening day lineup: 1. Swisher LF (I hate using him in the one spot, but there aren't any better options. And if you count Owens you're crazy) 2. Cabrera, SS 3. Thome, DH 4. Konerko, 1B 5. Dye, RF 6. Fields, 3B (this spot likely goes to Crede and KW will have Fields at AAA, which is freaking retarded) 7. Pierzynski, C 8. Anderson, CF (people know how I feel about him, but if my options are Owens and an injured Quentin, I gotta go with Anderson due to his defense) 9. Richar, 2B
  24. QUOTE(hammerhead johnson @ Mar 17, 2008 -> 10:27 PM) Seriesly? You voted for Dotel over Jenks? Jenks should have 100% of the vote in this poll. No excuses. And if anyone thinks otherwise, we need to talk, because I can use some of what you're smoking. Jenks is good, and can be dominant at times, but he isn't some god like some are making him out to be. I think Dotel can put up a better season statistically, aside from saves.
  25. I liked what I saw from Carrasco. I think it's pretty obvious Massett's gonna make the team, but hopefully we can keep Carrasco (and Ohka for that matter) at AAA as backup plans.
