  1. I can't put away a basketball without making the last shot, even if it's just a simple 360 roundhouse slam from the freethrow line, or a layup
  2. Tough Love vs.. Spanking Most of America' s population thinks it' s improper to spank children, so I have tried other methods to control my kids when they have one of "thos e moments." One that I found effective is for me to just take the child for a car ride and talk. They usually calm down and stop misbehaving after our car ride together. I've included a photo below of one of my sessions with my son, in case you would like to use the technique. Sincerely,
  3. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 18, 2008 -> 02:26 PM) There's them damn entitlements rearing their ugly heads again. Yep, the single biggest problem, bigger than illegal immigrants. I'm not talking about the investment kind of stuff like student financial aid, but the feed someone for a day kind of stuff. No easy answers, but continuing on the path we have found ourselves is not working. Unless we just consider it economic recovery, pumping more money into the economy. Then I guess it doesn't matter what it is spent on as long as it is spent.
  4. I have more respect for someone who slips into this country, illegally, and works hard to provide for his family and does not break any other laws than someone who legally sits on his ass and waits for the government check to arrive. I believe that working hard is closer to the American way than legally collecting a public aid check.
  5. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 18, 2008 -> 02:15 PM) Doesn't eliminating mistakes lead to successes? Usually. The point is not many people will stop and ask themselves why someting went right. They will assume it is because they are bigger, faster, stronger, smarter, etc. And that may be it. But duplicating your success is a powerful thing. Improving on success, as Kap just mentioned, can be so powerful.
  6. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jan 18, 2008 -> 02:10 PM) DING! but some will mock that. Everyday speeding on the expressway
  7. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 18, 2008 -> 02:05 PM) There is. It's called the School of Hard Knocks. Experience is a great teacher. I hit on something with my son when he was younger. We always tried to turn a negative into a positive by using it as a teaching moment and seeing what we could learn from that mistake. Most people can learn from their mistakes, but how many people really learn something from their successes?
  8. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 18, 2008 -> 02:02 PM) The best thing the occured to put food in peoples mouths was programs like the CCC. It put people to work. Of course a world war didn't hurt the ecomony either. But that's another issue. We've created a huge problem with some of these programs. A helping hand is one thing, a lifetime is another. Which is one reason I have respect for anyone who wants to come here and take any job, work hard at it, save some money, and even buy a house. Some may mock that, but that to me is the American dream, and important.
  9. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 18, 2008 -> 01:52 PM) You may not remember a lot of small specifics, but you remember some core stuff. You learned math and an assortment of other things you still remember. That's what it should be. You can't really require a class beyond high school anyway - college, its too narrow a group, and too late. Needs to be late high school. Agreed. But I think even with the absolute best class possible, there needs to be some refresher, some whatever later in life.
  10. Or remembering people starving to death in the United States during the depression.
  11. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 18, 2008 -> 01:45 PM) I'm gonna make a slightly different point - that it exposes the nearly complete lack of education on finance that this country's kids get. For the leading economy of the capitalist world, we sure don't seem to value knowledge of finances in our schools. Its an afterthought if its there at all. I believe part of the issue is the age that the classes would happen. At 16 or 18 I don't believe the kids have enough "real world" experience and it does not "stick" for the 10 years or so until they are buying homes, etc. Think how hard we strain to remember some items we learned in High School.
  12. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jan 18, 2008 -> 01:42 PM) DING!!! WINNAR!!! Except illegal immigrants. They work their asses off and deserve a house and (dirty) money. Intersting we do not require citizenship or even coming here to own real property in the US. Foreign companies and individuals invest in American property all the time. Or was this a slam against hard working people?
  13. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 18, 2008 -> 01:38 PM) Just remember that this will have to be approved by a Democratic congress. Beautiful isn't it? Even if it's a bad idea, how can the Dems say no? Santa is coming early this year
  14. Would this be a good time for a Republican President to hand out gifts to the tax payers? When is the next election?
  15. I retract the remark about Kentucky kids, I believe I misread your comments. I thought you were saying that the children of illegals are the poorly performing kids. Now that I slowed down and reread, I understand I made a terrible assumption. Sorry.
  16. QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Jan 17, 2008 -> 02:45 PM) Damn. I could like McCain, if not for his amnesty views and campaign finance reform. Oh well, at least Fred seems to be beating SOMEBODY. McCain seems like such an easy choice on that side, I can't believe he isn't just crushing everyone.
  17. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 17, 2008 -> 09:28 PM) Well, we wouldn't need the illegal migrant workers any more. Interesting that many studies and practical experience here, shows that immigrant kids perform far better in science and math then the native population.
  18. QUOTE(knightni @ Jan 17, 2008 -> 03:39 PM) Perhaps he didn't pass enough. Sliders were not his problem
  19. http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/01/17/border.fe...ref=mpstoryview Richard Cortez is my major. Very decent and nice man. Great volunteer resume working with youth.
  20. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 17, 2008 -> 03:22 PM) So far, an apple and a diet Dr. Pepper. And all this time I thought you were a guy. Sorry.
  21. QUOTE(knightni @ Jan 17, 2008 -> 03:28 PM) I think he was a catcher. Too many passed balls ruined his career
  22. QUOTE(Athomeboy_2000 @ Jan 17, 2008 -> 03:26 PM) If they could go home to vote, they would! I don't think so. More will vote at a location they are already at, like work. People find all sorts of excuses, and not knowing where to go is one of them. Not being able to get off work is another.
  23. QUOTE(Athomeboy_2000 @ Jan 17, 2008 -> 03:19 PM) See, and that is a HUGE issue I have with caucuses. I realize a caucuses probably favor Obama (whom I support). but Americans should be able to vote in secret. The one thing great about America is that we cant be influenced to vote when in the booth. It's what makes us different than supposed "democracy dictatorships" where you can vote, but if you dont vote for who we tell you to vote for... we kill you. THat is a bit drastic of a comparison, but who is to say someones JOB isnt in jeopardy for voting for Hillary and Not Obama? It's just not right. But what we have in a primary is two clubs picking who will represent them and run in the general. Each party has some flexibility in how they pick "their" candidate. Primaries as we know them, have only been around for about 50 years. At least with having a majority of states holding primaries. Prior to that, delegates were sent to a national convention to pick the candidate. At the most, you would have a voice in which delegate went.
  24. QUOTE(Athomeboy_2000 @ Jan 17, 2008 -> 02:45 PM) I thought that too. My guess is it's "fuzzy math" or a distortion of reality. Someone needs to call him out on this. People need to read the quote
