  2. September 11, 2006 NOTE FROM CHRIS: A German entrepreneur is hoping to take advantage of smokers' resentment at efforts to further curb where they can smoke by giving them their own airline, Smokers International Airways. They will be known as "Smintair." Here at TopFive, we think they need something catchier! 3. Let's not get confused, there is also a Patriots Day in the northeast
  4. QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Sep 11, 2006 -> 04:02 PM) I've never once eaten at Sonic, but I've heard so many people talk about it that it's become the Charlie Trotter's of fast food in my head. That would be Whataburger, but that's another thread, The best fast food burgers.

QUOTE(Steff @ Sep 11, 2006 -> 03:09 PM) Maybe he could have remembered that all walks of life vote and perhaps should have addressed all Americans and not just his political party. No matter. This aint my party I'm just a visitor. Great point. He sent this to a Democrat mailing list, hence the salutation. I am also on the GOP list and will post whatever they send as well. I think it should be a non partisan day, but even dedicated politicians should be allowed to speak, no? I didn't find anything in his letter that I thought would offend anyone, if it did, I would have posted it in the 'buster's dem thread.

QUOTE(Steff @ Sep 11, 2006 -> 02:27 PM) No offense... But I had hoped politics would stay absent from this thread. No offense taken, and I re-read the letter a couple times before posting it here. I agree that politics should not be a part of today, something we share with Dr. Dean, as he wrote We do have to remember we elect Republicans and Democrats, but we need them to govern like Americans.

Dear Fellow Democrat, Today we remember many things. We remember where we were. We remember the scenes on television. We remember the victims who were murdered. We remember the families and loved ones they left behind. We remember the heroes who charged into danger to save lives. We remember a moment of unity at home and around the world, where people rallied around a single mission and a common sense of justice that must be done. Today we face many challenges at home and abroad. And too often it's too easy to be distracted by the politics, the pundits, and the posturing. We must always remember that the dangers we face know no political party, and the solutions and leadership we need now go beyond ideology. We must meet these challenges head-on -- remembering to stand together in action as we live together under threat. We are all Americans. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter." We will not be silent. Today we remember many things. And tomorrow, back on the campaign trail, we will remember to take with us the plain truth and a commitment to true justice for all those whose lives were transformed on this day five years ago. Thank you. Governor Howard Dean, M.D.
  9. QUOTE(KansasSoxFan @ Sep 11, 2006 -> 01:46 PM) From the Tribune article: None of the Sonics in Wichita, KS, that I've been to have roller-skating carhops. How common is this, really? All of them down here do, I've never seen one where they aren't skating.
  10. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 07:14 AM) I wish we had Jack in the Box up here, plus the chain I really miss is Hot and Now. Sourdough Jacks yummy Hot and Now, is that some brothel? Sonics, about all I order are drinks to go. The Cherry Lime-Ade is excellent
  11. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Sep 11, 2006 -> 11:48 AM) Great rant. Too bad it was a complete waste of your keyboard. Thornton, Jenks, and MacDougall were not available. So, oh awesome internet baseball manager... What's your next "obvious" solution?
  12. http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/09/11/911.poll/index.html Plenty of blame to go around. It was the failure of a nation, not just these assclowns
  13. QUOTE(Soxy @ Sep 11, 2006 -> 11:17 AM) I don't think it should be a holiday. In fact, I think there is something almost beautiful about the country continuing to carry on and keep on track on the anniversary of such a tragedy. On a more cynical note, it will be interesting to see in 60 years how much people remember September 11th. My hunch is that much like previous dates that had a lot of history importance (V-E Day, Pearl Harbor, Normandy, Kennedy's assasination), it will fade into the collective unconcious and really only be mentioned in passing at the end of news shows. In 60 years, I'll be dead, or if still alive, I'll not give a s*** Seriously, I doubt it will take that long. I hope that it's because of extended peace and prosperity, not because it is dwarfed by another event.
  14. QUOTE(Soxy @ Sep 11, 2006 -> 11:07 AM) Just a general question but, do all states have the lottery? No, about a dozen do not and not so surprising, those states spend about the same, or more, on education. Most states without a lottery, IIRC are out west. North Carolina was the last east coast state to add a lottery and I believe they did it last year or early this year. Also, states like Utah with strong religious groups will probably never have a lottery. Some poorer states like Mississippi and Arkansas have resisted because of the social implications. Aaska and Hawaii haven't the tax needs for a lottery, so they do not have them.

12:15 p.m.: The Immigration and Naturalization Service says U.S. borders with Canada and Mexico are on the highest state of alert, but no decision has been made about closing borders. Most US workers living here and working in Mexico were making a mad dash for the border. People were worried the borders would be closed and they would be stuck in Mexico until repatriated. People on the US side were frantically calling over to Mexico.
  16. QUOTE(Queen Prawn @ Sep 11, 2006 -> 08:44 AM) Maybe we should hold off on getting one for a day or two... thanks for the info. Call tech support Possibly too late now, but if this happens again, place the phone, or other small electronic device, into a plastic bag and fill with uncooked* rice. It will help the electronics to dry out quicker and more completly as the rice obsorbs moisture. *added just in case someone is that dumb. Stumbled across this while researching Jim Brown Searunners I love that turn of a phrase. I wonder what they are talking about? Reading? Eating?
  17. In many areas of the country, 9/11 celebrations have taken on a military feel. Tonight, for example, the event in McAllen, TX will be at our War Veterans Memorial.
  18. We love the guys who haven't had the chance to break our hearts. Once they are up and had a chance to play, they suck like every other mortal that has ever put on the uniform.
  19. I believe it's going to be a meaningless series by that point. I don't see this team picking up ground, I see them losing ground. Amazing, the starting pitching has come around at the exact perfect time, just to get wasted by the pen.
  20. I don't believe celebrate and holiday are mutually required. Christmas is a holiday, but not every American celebrates that day. Oops, bad example. I understand what Steff is saying, and I agree it seems like a strange set of words. Pehaps the question is better stated, should 9.11 have an official designation on the Federal calendar? Maybe we need a new category.
  21. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Sep 9, 2006 -> 12:27 PM) It amazes me how the Democrats are all in a panty-wad tight uproar about this. From what I hear, there's plenty of blame to go around, on all accounts, but the 20 miuutes of "Clinton blame" is JUST too much!!! OMG!!@#$!%!!!!! It amazes me how Republicans don't care about accuracy as long as it benefits their party. But let CNN make a mistake in a 15 second report and every conservative blogger and the GOP Radio Network goes nuts. Plenty of this crap to go around on both sides.
  22. I don't think so. Designating it as a special day would be the first step to trivilize it. I like the spontaneous remembrances, the community events run by volunteers, etc. Tonight, I will be at a small event hosted by the Boy Scouts. I don't need the atmosphere of "do we get Terrorist Day off?"
  23. It would be largly symbolic, but if the goal is to encourage a healthy body imagine, why not cover both ends? Great turn of a phrase, a human coat hanger.
  24. You always deal from surplus to fill a hole and starting pitching seems to be our surplus. He may be the "odd man out", but a lot of factors come into play. Sadly, as we know, not all are on the field.
