  1. QUOTE(Soxy @ Sep 11, 2006 -> 11:17 AM) I don't think it should be a holiday. In fact, I think there is something almost beautiful about the country continuing to carry on and keep on track on the anniversary of such a tragedy. On a more cynical note, it will be interesting to see in 60 years how much people remember September 11th. My hunch is that much like previous dates that had a lot of history importance (V-E Day, Pearl Harbor, Normandy, Kennedy's assasination), it will fade into the collective unconcious and really only be mentioned in passing at the end of news shows. In 60 years, I'll be dead, or if still alive, I'll not give a s*** Seriously, I doubt it will take that long. I hope that it's because of extended peace and prosperity, not because it is dwarfed by another event.
  2. QUOTE(Soxy @ Sep 11, 2006 -> 11:07 AM) Just a general question but, do all states have the lottery? No, about a dozen do not and not so surprising, those states spend about the same, or more, on education. Most states without a lottery, IIRC are out west. North Carolina was the last east coast state to add a lottery and I believe they did it last year or early this year. Also, states like Utah with strong religious groups will probably never have a lottery. Some poorer states like Mississippi and Arkansas have resisted because of the social implications. Aaska and Hawaii haven't the tax needs for a lottery, so they do not have them.

12:15 p.m.: The Immigration and Naturalization Service says U.S. borders with Canada and Mexico are on the highest state of alert, but no decision has been made about closing borders. Most US workers living here and working in Mexico were making a mad dash for the border. People were worried the borders would be closed and they would be stuck in Mexico until repatriated. People on the US side were frantically calling over to Mexico.
  4. QUOTE(Queen Prawn @ Sep 11, 2006 -> 08:44 AM) Maybe we should hold off on getting one for a day or two... thanks for the info. Call tech support Possibly too late now, but if this happens again, place the phone, or other small electronic device, into a plastic bag and fill with uncooked* rice. It will help the electronics to dry out quicker and more completly as the rice obsorbs moisture. *added just in case someone is that dumb. Stumbled across this while researching Jim Brown Searunners I love that turn of a phrase. I wonder what they are talking about? Reading? Eating?
  5. In many areas of the country, 9/11 celebrations have taken on a military feel. Tonight, for example, the event in McAllen, TX will be at our War Veterans Memorial.
  6. We love the guys who haven't had the chance to break our hearts. Once they are up and had a chance to play, they suck like every other mortal that has ever put on the uniform.
  7. I believe it's going to be a meaningless series by that point. I don't see this team picking up ground, I see them losing ground. Amazing, the starting pitching has come around at the exact perfect time, just to get wasted by the pen.
  8. I don't believe celebrate and holiday are mutually required. Christmas is a holiday, but not every American celebrates that day. Oops, bad example. I understand what Steff is saying, and I agree it seems like a strange set of words. Pehaps the question is better stated, should 9.11 have an official designation on the Federal calendar? Maybe we need a new category.
  9. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Sep 9, 2006 -> 12:27 PM) It amazes me how the Democrats are all in a panty-wad tight uproar about this. From what I hear, there's plenty of blame to go around, on all accounts, but the 20 miuutes of "Clinton blame" is JUST too much!!! OMG!!@#$!%!!!!! It amazes me how Republicans don't care about accuracy as long as it benefits their party. But let CNN make a mistake in a 15 second report and every conservative blogger and the GOP Radio Network goes nuts. Plenty of this crap to go around on both sides.
  10. I don't think so. Designating it as a special day would be the first step to trivilize it. I like the spontaneous remembrances, the community events run by volunteers, etc. Tonight, I will be at a small event hosted by the Boy Scouts. I don't need the atmosphere of "do we get Terrorist Day off?"

It would be largly symbolic, but if the goal is to encourage a healthy body imagine, why not cover both ends? Great turn of a phrase, a human coat hanger.
  12. You always deal from surplus to fill a hole and starting pitching seems to be our surplus. He may be the "odd man out", but a lot of factors come into play. Sadly, as we know, not all are on the field.
  13. Isn't it nice to know that thousands of US service men and women died so these people could rule their own country? Let's see, we invaded because Saddam was torturing citizens and had WMD, after we invade, they are still torturing citizens and we didn't find any WMD. That's improvement Mr. President. As usual, the conservative press will not report this because it would make Bush look bad right before elections.

BTW, if they banned too fat models, would that be ok? There are health risks for being too fat as well.
  15. SS, I agree with everything you wrote there with one exception. Painfully, I have given up on Brandon for this season. I still think he's a mlb pitcher and pretty damn close to taking a regular spot in the rotation. This will come off wrong, but I wish there had been a need in June for Brandon to make three or four starts in a row. Have him take spot, not have it hande to him via a trade like Brian Anderson. Ozzie is in a position where he has to guess who may have an ining or two and so far I'm not seeing any bullpen arms out there. This is a team that doesn't overwork relievers, so I can't blame Oz too much for not having bullpen arms in September.

I was getting ready to head to the airport and pick up a group from Milwaukee. They never made it past O'Hare. They had a short layover in Chicago and while taxiing, the plane was stopped and eventually returned to the gate. I had just gotten out of the shower and the Today show was on. At first, not really realizing the size of the WTC, I assumed it was a small single engine plane with a suicidal pilot. As it was sinking in that it was a plane of that size and all the ramifications, the second hit. I spent the rest of the day in prayer and glued to the TV.

    smart move.
  19. I'd take Gore over a lot of other cadidates from both sides of the aisle. I'm guessing my early favorite, The Hammer will not be running. (hi Kap) I'd like to see a McCain ticket, on the Dem side, anyone but Hillary, I can't see her winning, no matter how hard the GOP and conservative media tries to paint her the front runner and a lock for the nomination.
  20. No speed and her obp sucks
  21. QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Sep 9, 2006 -> 10:53 AM) They also turn away gay people who would like to donate blood, IIRC. That is a FDA rule, so it appears that any blood center has to turn away any man who has sex with another man since 1977. There was a proposal to make it a floating 5 year time period, but the FDA voted no to that as well. I thought with improved testing that was an outdated policy.
  22. Now we rip reporters for drinking the Sox koolaid
  23. QUOTE($I Need Money$ @ Sep 8, 2006 -> 06:17 PM) A.J.'s likeable? What do you think of him today?
  24. Jenks should have been pulled after the third batter.
