Dems don't like minimum wage?
QUOTE(DrunkBomber @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 11:35 AM) There are bigger problems out there. In reference to it helping the economy, I think not paying illegal immigrants cash under the table for less money then Americans will do a job because the money has a higher exchange rate when sent home is a bigger strain on the economy then what little Jimmy makes pushing carts at Target. I find it amazing that people are able to work for $2 per hour, live in the US and pay for food, raiment, and shelter, and still send thousdands of dollars back home . . . amazing.

Are the Sox "fun bad"??
For it to be "fun bad" the team has to have no chance, and this team clearly has/had chances. I could go out and watch a fourth place team bungle and tumble to a losing record and have fun at the old ballpark. Laugh at their ineptitude, cheer for a good play from either team, and dream of the "can't miss prospects" in the minors. Here's a fun bad lineup that threatened to lose 100 games and finished at 64-97. 1976 Name Pos. 1. Chet Lemon CF 2. Ralph Garr LF 3. Jorge Orta 3B 4. Cleon Jones DH 5. Buddy Bradford RF 6. Jim Spencer 1B 7. Bucky Dent SS 8. Jack Brohamer 2B 9. Pete Varney C Wilbur Wood P The 2006 team should be threatening to catch Detroit, at worst. No fun here.

Has this team quit?
QUOTE(WCSox @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 11:50 AM) No, but I think that a number of fans here have quit. I was just about to post the same thing. Who quits first? The players, the coaches, the fans, or the ownership? The white flag trades tells me sometimes it's the ownership, last years fans jumping off the cliff in September, tells me sometimes it's the fans, I wonder if we can really ever tell if it's the players.

Runners, Hikers, Skiers
It is a great idea. I was always using the elastic cuff on my shell while running or trying the "farmers" wipe.

The Good News this Morning
We desperatly need a couple more loses. This team needs a three game deficit, then come roaring back. Ozzie is brilliant in recognizing this.

Dems don't like minimum wage?
It seems like y'all are talkingpast each other. Evil, if I understand the point, is pointing out that the Ford Foundation earned a return (profit) on their investment. Southsider, if I understand his point, is looking at an annual basis and suggesting that if they are spending that money, they have not made an annual profit. So we have individual transaction vs. annual budget. I believe the earnings from the endowment is analogous to a donation and should be considered income. What they do with that money would determine if they showed a "profit" or not. Tossed into the mix were comments that some CEOs and top officials of not for profits have been corrupt, perhaps engaged in illegal activities. Which prompts me to suggest Always check out the charity you are giving to. CEOs are greedy in both the for profit and not for profit arenas. Overall, I believe we have had more for profit, publically traded companies suffer at the hands of immoral CEOs than not for profit. I'm thinking TYCO, ENRON, etc. Just as no one would or should blindly invest in a company without research, before donating sizable assets to a charity, they should be checked out. may I suggest a donation to the Boy Scouts?

Anyone remember France denying flyovers?
QUOTE(EvilMonkey @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 08:49 AM) I am saying it takes balls to stand up to the Muslims in Europe, which most of the governments over there just don't seem to want to do. Europe has been thumbing its nose at us for a while. C'mon, Tex, anti-US in the 'in' thing in Europe (and elsewhere), it has been for a while now. While it may be the "in" thing to you really believe it is easier to stand up to the US than Muslims?

Anyone remember France denying flyovers?
Are you saying it doesn't take balls to go against the US position? I would think it would take a greater level of testosterone to not stand side by side with the only remaining superpower. It seems more to me that we labeled France as weak and wrong when they remained nuetral, now that more and more countries are taking that position, we are becoming more and more the outsider.

New travel rules for travelers to Mexico and Canada
It's going to be a pain in the backside for people living on the border, especially those working in Mexico. Imagine if everyone travelling on 94 into Wisconsin had to stop and show a passport. http://themonitor.com/SiteProcessor.cfm?Te...p;Section=Local

Anyone remember France denying flyovers?
QUOTE(mr_genius @ Sep 5, 2006 -> 05:00 PM) actually, he never mentioned the United States. of course selling arms to nations/groups that are militant to our allies is wrong. what is your point? France is somehow correct in their actions because of something the United States has done that you don't like? France isn't even mentioned, the thread title is misleading . . . Now that you know it's Britian, Germany, and Spain, does that change your opinion?

Dems don't like minimum wage?
By the way, these people were on commission. And guess what, as anyone on commission will attest, there are many hours you do not make minimum wage and other hours you make 100X the minimum wage. From the same article . . . So it was pay for performance. People who went to work for the company knew the plan and were probably attracted to the prospect of bigger paychecks. Now, I'd have a bigger problem with such a large chunk of my donation going to expenses.

Dems don't like minimum wage?
I'm not certain if it matters here but there are not for profit groups (example a Country Club's Men's Golf Association) then there are not for profit charities. 501©3. Most charities are trying to build endowments and use the income from the endowment to fund operations. For example my local Boy Scout Council has an endowment of just over 1,000,000. Money was donated to this fund with the understanding that the principle would not be used, just the interest.

Brandon McCarthy is not a phenom
Reading through this thread, I think some of the differences are not in how people rate Brandon's talent, but in how enthusiastic and how bold predictions people will make. Of all the "younger than Garland" pitchers in the system, Brandon would be my #1 pick as the best, and I believe he has the talent to be a very solid pitcher. But, so much goes into reaching Clemens, Pedro, Johnson, Maddux level. Work, teams, coaches, key situations, and even luck. So no matter how much talent a guy has, I'd never be annointing him as a savior with a mlb total 6 wins. I've gushed at too many young players and watched them crash and burn and be out of the league in a couple seasons. Does that make Brandon any less special a talent? Of course not. When I was 25, I'd be figurig out what year his first of 6 CY Young Awards would come. Now, I'll sit back and patiently watch his development and hope it's with the Sox. I've also seen the difference between AAA and brief mlb appearances. The difference between spot starts and a regular spot in the rotation. A regular spot and the pressure to be "the guy". You can't always tell where a guy will be comfortable and where he will rise to his own level of inefficiencies.

Dustin Hermanson "back"
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 5, 2006 -> 03:45 PM) Hermy needs to retire and become a really good pitching coach. I get the feeling he'd be great at it. Of recent Sox players I would like to see as coaches, he and Sandy would top my list. And you know how this organization likes to bring players back to coach.

Brandon McCarthy is not a phenom
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Sep 5, 2006 -> 02:30 PM) Bmac will be at least a number 2 starter for this team. There, I said it. After we get rid of Buerhle and Garland, yes he will. It will take a couple/few seasons for him to pull past these two guys for an entire season. One thing that happens as I get older, I stopped getting excited about potential. Guys like Buerhle and Garland excite me. I know they will win 15+ games every season for the next four or five season. Garland excited me because I've watched him mature into a mlb pitcher. I have watched too many can't miss prospects miss. Can anyone say Rauch?

Parent brawl at football game
QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Sep 5, 2006 -> 02:11 PM) I'm gonna have to disagree..."instincts" or not, you have to recognize that you're a 36-or-whatever adult about to knock the crap out of a 13-year-old boy, and that's just not the right reaction for the action that occurred. It was a late and not-very-violent hit in football with full pads, not someone taking a gun or a knife out on the kid. What exactly are you disagreeing with? I said it was instinctive, I didn't say it's right. I also mentioned in tells a lot about the dad's agression, and not in a positive way.
-
Brandon McCarthy is not a phenom
Ah the fickle nature of fans. These 5 guys would lead the Sox to nirvana less than a year ago. This season it's trade them all. Garland, sucked early, get rid of him. Winningest pitcher in baseball the past two seasons, fans wanted him out. Buerhle, trade him. Freddy? Javier? Jose? Trade them all, make room for Brandon. So Bmac comes in, we'll want to dump him in a year or two as soon as he loses two starts in a row. Somewhere between the phenom tag and him being a lousy pitcher based on a couple relief appearances, is probably the truth. Something to think about. If Brandon wins 18-20 games per season for the next 4 years, he'd have the same win total as Garland at the same age. Brandon 7/7/83 6 wins Garland 9/27/79 80 wins 23 relief appearances Buerhle 3/23/79 96 wins 25 relief appearances Pick your yardstick. And decide just what kind of career you think this mlb pitcher would have.

Parent brawl at football game
QUOTE(mreye @ Sep 5, 2006 -> 11:47 AM) Am I the only one that thinks the hit, while late, was not really that bad? I didn't think the hit was bad, the other kid popped right back up. The dad's hit was worse. I think it was instinctive, but I think it tells a lot about the agression in the father. He took off in a split second. Hits like that are a dime a dozen . . .
