Boycott aims to "close" US cities
QUOTE(kapkomet @ Apr 27, 2006 -> 01:22 PM) WOOOOOHOOOOOOO! Screw them. I have no sympathy for these people if their stated intent is to inflict harm on the economy... go ahead, bite the hand that feeds you. Morons. bad move politically. Compromise is a far better path. I do not want my eleceted leaders to be intimidated into a decision. Rally, state your cause. But don't try to harm anyone in the process.

Computer and Other Company Support
Recent experieces My daughters desktop suddenly stopped allowing programs to access the internet. I could "ping" sites from a comand prompt, but no programs would run. Self check, disconnected firewall, disabled anti-virus, spy sweep, virus sweep, finally rolled back a MS update, and it started working again. Month or two later, same problem, only the last solution doesn't work. Call to Time-Warner and Roadrunner, my ISP. Short version, the rest of the network can connect? Sorry, your on your own. Total time: On hold 10 minutes, on line with a person, 4 minutes most of it asking cya, post no help, speech. Grade F for f*** them if I had an alternative. Linksys: Time on hold, 2 minutes. Time with tech 1 hour. Combed over the system, piece by piece even after it was determined their hardware was working fine. Grade A++ for effort, professionalism, and willingness and desire to help. I wish I could pronounce the guy's name. Microsoft: Short version? #1 reason to go MAC. Grade F HP/Compaq: Phone support? Three weeks out of warrenty. I won't bore you. D On-Line support via "live chat" Four techs, three lost connections, multiple restarts, and finally the machine is running. 9.5 hours of work Monday. B+. Good people. BTW, Linksys was in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and was by far the best tech support I have ever experienced.

Catch-All Anything Thread
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Apr 27, 2006 -> 12:43 PM) Striking up conversations at the urinals is not cool. Inadvertant peeking can occur, which is a big no-no. Which is why I think we are all fans of the Sloan Royal Flush II. How many times have I read that over and over again. Does anyone else make urinal valves?

Delmon Young throws bat at umpire after...
I'd like to see the video. Throwing a bat could be better or worse than swinging the bat. Did the umpire get in the way of the toss, or did he throw with intent to hurt? It could be the difference in the real world from battery to attempted murder. Still striking an umpire has to be as serious of a infraction as can be.

The Iranian Tragedy of 1980
I've been thinking about what would have happened if this unfolded today. There would likely been no negoatiations, no Algiers Accord, maybe a better plan for a military rescue. I don't believe we have advanced much in our dealings with terrorists in the past 20-25 years.

Congressional Softball Drama.
I think the league got too big and it was divided and someone had fun writing the story. I love the names, Dennys Grand Slam, 1040 Slashers, etc. BTW, it's legit, Wall Street Journal and a Seattle Times have run the story. From friends of mine that have worked D.C. it's an industry town, everyone works in the industry, and there is a lot more comradery than you'd expect.

GOP Backing Away From Tough Immigration
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Apr 27, 2006 -> 11:03 AM) I suppose it was inevitable, with the demands, protests, boycotts, and the like that the idiots were going to start to get involved. Some extreme groups are now promoting violence against immigrants. http://www.adl.org/main_Extremism/immigrat...ions=sHeading_1 It's amazing how big a voice fourteen people and a web site can have. :headshake No matter what a person's views are, all decent Americans know this is wrong.

The Iranian Tragedy of 1980
QUOTE(samclemens @ Apr 27, 2006 -> 12:05 PM) tex. you are saying that carter shouldnt get all the blame for that screwup because they planned it. i havent seen you extend our current president the same courtesy, why is that? how you can honestly defend carter is beyond me...he was the worst modern prez in our country's history, and his iran decision has adversely and directly affected our current situation with iran. to me that is indisputable. Show me where I blamed Bush for any of the hostages that have been killed? I have extended that same courtesy to Bush as I would any President.

The Iranian Tragedy of 1980
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Apr 27, 2006 -> 10:23 AM) I think if anything, Carter does deserve some blame for going forwards with a very risky, highly complex, and poorly planned mission which had a very high probability of failure without making sure he was adequately informed on the mission and its probabilities of failure. He also deserves blame for letting impatience get the best of him, since they rightfully rejected that plan before, but then went ahead with it anyway after their patience wore thin. Risky? Any mission was going to be highly risky. No way around it. Complex? Again, operating half way around the world, I don't think there would be a simple solution. If there was, somewhere in the halls of the Pentagon and CIA, it would have been thought of. Poorly planned? I'm not certain what you are basing that on. IIRC, this plan had been worked out and practiced in a secret location. I think our military, operating on the knowledge of the day, had the best plan possible. But we really will never know. We never got that far. A sandstorm caused the mission to be aborted. High probability of failure? Possibly, but it was decided by the Pentagon and everyone else, it was the best of the group. I believe any plan had a high probability of failure, which is why one wasn't tried until diplomatic avenues were running out. In the immediate aftermath, I never heard a better plan proposed. I don't think it was patience, but I've read some compelling stuff that politics and getting re-elected factored into the timing. I've also read Pentagon sources that claim other wise, it was procedural and training issues that delayed along with moon phase and the captors patterns. I wonder how it would have played out today? No negotiations. More violent terorrists. I am pessimistic that it would have turned out as well. I see a lot more body bags, and isn't that the bottom line?

The Iranian Tragedy of 1980
QUOTE(kapkomet @ Apr 27, 2006 -> 08:34 AM) You've got to be kidding. What are you blaming Carter for? A bad military plan? Maintenance on the choppers? Weather? Soldiers failing to execute the plan? A helicopter clipping a C-130? The second guessing could be, was this the best approach? A miitary or diplomatic solution. Adding additional, and greater, violence into the equation should be weighed carefully and I believe it was. After holding off on a military strike, the decision was made to go ahead. I think that was a good decision at the time. After the mission was aborted, due to a sudden sandstorm, a helicopter clipped a C-130 taking off, resulting in the deaths of eight servicemen. I find it hard to blame the President for that. I believe we had out best possible people involved, the Air Force and Marines and am saddened for the eight servicemen who died in the mission. I don't think the Presidents decides who participates, plus it was a volunteer mission. In the end, the Algiers Accords resulted in the release of the hostages, alive. I think it is unfair to say unharmed, because anyone held hostage for 444 days, will be harmed. Sadly, we are better prepared today for this type of event. We have worked more missions and battles in the desert, have better technology, better resources in Arab countries, better understanding of the terrorist mind. Yet, hostages are killed regularly in that corner of the world. Perhaps, in hindsight, we did a much better job in 1979 than we thought.

Weird Quirks
We all have those weird quirks, if you don't think you do, just ask a friend I just noticed I always make certain the eggs in the egg carton are position towards the center so it balances in your hand. If you take from just one end, it gets heavy towards one side. How I arrived at that habit is beyond me.

Delmon Young throws bat at umpire after...
QUOTE(WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Apr 26, 2006 -> 08:44 PM) He's had a problems in the past, too. The Devil Rays need to give him a 40 game suspension and send a message. The guy is one hell of a talent. I'm guessing it will be the league jumping in here, and I imagine it will be a stiff fine and suspension. He may be ready physically, but if he can't control himself and is throwing a bat at the umpire, he's got some growing between the ears to do. I believe the difference between a AAA and MLB talent wise is razor thin, it's attitude and mental abilities that can make the difference for most players.

Another big Chicago protest up coming!
QUOTE(EvilMonkey @ Apr 27, 2006 -> 08:03 AM) And if workers take off to 'protest' without getting permission from their employers first, I hope they all get fired, fined, reprimanded, suspended, whatever. I have to agree with Evil on this one. The key being permission. I would also hope that most employers count this as a vacation day, personal day, sick day, etc. But give them the time off, where possible, and following accepted company rules. How about a national take the job of an illegal day? Have documented, legal workers that could be picking fruit, mowing lawns, busing tables, apply for those jobs and show the employers that there are millions of workers available, ready and willing to work.

Shopping for a new PC
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 27, 2006 -> 07:47 AM) Then buy an IBM (or Lenovo or whatever they want to call it). They aren't too exciting in design, and they are a bit pricey, but you will get quality. I never had a quality problem, it's been design issues. Placement of stuff. I thought I would like the joystick thingy stuck in the keyboard on I think it was the Toshiba, not. I thought I liked the drives up front, until I was on an airplane and had to suck in my gut to get a CD in. This HP has the USB ports right next to the power connection. The power connection is a right angle connector and it blocks the ports if it isn't moved to the side. Stuff like that. I actually have been impressed with the quality of every laptop I've owned. I will probably go IBM next, I never seem to buy the same brand twice.
