  1. Timo I'm thinking Pods steps up. He was nagged by some leg stuff, and his bat wasn't always there. I'm thinking consistency at the plate, better steal percentage, even if total steals remains about the same. Plus, what fun is it in picking one of the obvious? BTW, Gooch has been doing this a long time and at a pretty high level. I'd be surprised if he improves much over the second half of last season.
  2. There is a reason that the MLB drafts every kid who owns a mitt. Drafting baseball players has the worse payoff of any sport. I don't mind trading away prospects for MLB ready talent. As much as it sucks when guys like Bull are gone, after pulling for them to make the 25, the odds are so long, take the guy who is ready.
  3. Sayoonara.
  4. I think this can be a position by position and a current state of the roster situation. In general, I like college pitchers. A few more innings pitched, and against better talent, starts to reveal any structure issues. Roster situation. If I'm the Yankees, I'd take all the chances in the world on left side infielders, those positions seem nailed down for a few more years. College outfielders make more sense. Finally, in favor of HS draftees, who would you rather have coaching a player, your minor league system or a college staff of questionable skills and methods? Another factor is how loose you are in dealing prospects. If I was a develop my team in house type, I might opt for more HS picks, if I was a deal 'em kind of GM, I'd take the quicker to be almost ready college kids. (Actually, I need to rethink that last bit, that could go either way.)
  5. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 19, 2006 -> 05:28 PM) I doubt there's a fan in basketball who would complain about a guy on their side receiving one of those fines. Hell, if Pax asked all of the Bulls season ticket holders to put up $1 to cover it, Ib et they would. Wouldn't he be about $10,000 short? Not specific to this game, but I always laugh when I read about an inbalance in free throws and it somehow implies the refs did a bad job. If the free throws should balance, why not just issue them before the game? Sometimes one team does commit more fouls, doh!

    Didn't the Cubs just sign Grissom? Maybe they are trying to figure out how their World Series dreams died
  7. QUOTE(Steff @ Jan 19, 2006 -> 02:08 PM) Just walked over to Wendy's to grab a burger and walked by a lady in her car on her cell phone.. Apparently she was extremely upset with someone whose name appeared to be either MF'er or stupid asshole, because that's what she kept calling him and boy was she LOUD. I went inside and the drive thru folks were laughing about it cause they could hear her over the speaker from the parking lot. sounds like you met my wife . . .

  10. Can we have a confirmation hearing? Mr. Kickass, what do you believe the role of a moderator to be in a modern, post 9/11 world and do you believe that neutrinos are a component of dark energy?

  17. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 18, 2006 -> 01:09 PM) Eh, count me out then... Sounds to much like who can use Google the quickest and most effectively. How do you google your opinion? Backing your opinion with well researched facts would actually be a nice change around here. There won't be a right or wrong answer. The questions will be structured in a way that someone will have to state their opinion and back it up, isn't that what a debate is?
  18. QUOTE(Steff @ Jan 18, 2006 -> 12:52 PM) Nerds. I guess Steff is in
  19. Let me give an example of a possible round one question. Local, State, and National governments support the arts through grants, public art projects, and other expenditures. With rising government debt, is this a good use of tax dollars?
  20. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 18, 2006 -> 12:43 PM) Curious here... Are we on our own, or are we resourcing for answers? Personally if it is looking up other peoples resources, I am not much interested in this. If it is something that is based on our own knowledge and opinions then I am in. It will be your opinion, but wouldn't any great debate involve some backing up of data, if that is making your point? I suspect that the judges will be looking at your sources, and if they are some fringe wacko web site, you may lose points, if they are respectful, you may gain points. Of they are "books you have at home", then you may not make round 2. Since there will be a possibility you may both agree, you will have to find someway, like a good candidate for office, to try and differentiate yourself. If I structure the question and give people sides, I think it takes away from the format. I did consider that.
  21. Here is my current plan. Round One. I will select a topic and each player will have 24 hours to reply with an opening statement. Then they will have a chance to ask each other two questions. Asked one at a time, and will have an opportunity to respond to each answer. All replies will be limited to 500 words. Icons, emoticons, etc, we count as one word. Pictures (this is the internet) will set you back 100 words. After the conclusion of the Q&A, each person will be allowed 24 hours to write a closing. I will add a poll to the debate and posters will have an opportunity to vote on the winner. I also have two people selected to vote. The three votes will determine who moves on to round two and who gets to flame me for weeks. The first topic will not be "hot", but the finals probably will. Plagerism, person attacks, etc. will result in a lose and possible suspensions. All normal and customary ST rules apply.

    QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 18, 2006 -> 11:50 AM) So, what you are saying that the Democratic Party (should I be using caps here?) is uncoordinated? I think the members are, same with the GOP. What is coordinated is the platform and some of the talking points. And Republicans can't dance
  23. Texsox replied to kapkomet's topic in The Filibuster
    Coordinated? With so many personal agendas out there, I really doubt any of this is coordinated beyond the usual party talking points coming out of the RNC and DNC. Just like the White House will send out the flackies to make the rounds of the talk shows, news shows, and columnists, I'm certain there are some points that people will agree on and mention.

    QUOTE(mr_genius @ Jan 18, 2006 -> 11:33 AM) If a political party was serious about doing something like this that would be great. But this just sounds like lip service to me. The laws have been getting tighter and tighter. What is silly in my book is if a staffer is going to be swayed by a $25 lunch, what would she do for a $300 iPod or a $200,000 rent free studio condo near downtown? We are making a much bigger deal about a working business lunch paid by a sales rep (lobbyist).
  25. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 18, 2006 -> 11:28 AM) You definitely do not fall into the "hard liners" in my opinion. I think I do on certain topics. Keep the Minutemen and Military out of my backyard (literally). Don't cut taxes *and* increase spending. Capital Punishment. Scott Boras. Free Agents. Abortion. Politically motivated investigations. There is a God, and we all could be worshipping the same God through our individual cultures. Unfortunatly, they put me on opposite sides, at one time or another, with everyone. I also love SL&P and now Filibuster threads that are heated and the posts are flying at 25 an hour. I know in a day or two, everyone looks backs and usually laughs at the stupidity of theirs and the other posts, and life goes on.
