QUOTE(EvilMonkey @ Sep 27, 2005 -> 10:55 AM) Tex, EIB doesn't tell Rush what to say, they just pay him to talk! As for casey's mom, there isn't a democratic talking point she hasn't made. It is like she has a crib sheet of everything ever said about Bush and republicans in general, and is just reciting them from memory. I am sure she didn't just come up with all this on her own. At some point, if her quest was really about her grief over her son, don't you think she would have told the move-on.org people to get lost, and that by them trying to join forces with her, they are bastardizing her message? She had sincerity when she was sitting in the ditch by herself. Once all the Bush-haters joined in, it has corrupted her message into just another political rally. As for her getting paid, what is she living on? Hubby divorced her because she is wacko, she isn't 'working', so she is getting money from somewhere. How was she making it before the bandwagon got rolling? What would happen to Rush's rating if he suddenly started spouting liberal ideas? He's getting paid to chant the GOP party line. That's the show that EIB sells. In various posts, you've said almost every GOP talking point, are you getting paid? I've hit almost all the DEM talking points and I'm not drawing a check from them. It doesn't surprise me that someone that opposed to the war would be sympathetic to other DEM causes, does it surprise you? Or is she really a conservative, against the war, and adopted the other views so she can hang with Moore? If you had a cause that you really believed in and had your choice of telling it to dozens of people or linking with a GOP group and telling it to millions, which would you do? I think she is doing exactly what anyone would do. Grass roots, gathering steam, wider audience, different people. But if someone could show how she changed her views once she hit the big time, I would change my mind in a heart beat. But until then, I don't see the for sale sign on her opinion. What the money has done, as it always does in America, is bought credibility that should not be freely given. It bought a wider audience. It bought the media attention. Follow the money was the Watergate mantra, and modern day journalists have bastardized that to mean follow the story with the most money behind it.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Sep 27, 2005 -> 11:14 AM) The point is they have a 50 year pattern of removing felons from trouble situations, and moving them to situations where they can continue to commit felonies, all without reporting these crimes to the proper authorities. They are legally obligated to report these crimes, and they do not. Please don't think I am excusing this behavior, I was just offering for thought the perspective of the victims that want the Church to keep it quiet while removing the offending Priest. We should also balance the 50 year history with societies handling of sex crimes. Rape victims were routinely discredited, their clothes, their mannerisms, suggestions that they "wanted it". Churches weren't the only institutions that swept these things under the rug. I believe we have to address the full range of the problem, not just think we can dump it all on one doorstep.

QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Sep 27, 2005 -> 10:36 AM) Funny you should mention chemical companies as there was a piece on CNBC yesterday on how they are getting killed by higher raw material costs. In my industry there is a balance that usually equates to higher chem cost, lower labor. That being the more expensive chemicals save time and effort. Being the environmental, tree hugging, wacko, I avoid strong chemicals in favor of longer times and higher wages. I'm starting to look at some alternatives that would allow me to turn off the machines quicker. It doesn't do me any good to lose jobs to careless competitors who leave toxic waste dumps in their wake.

There is still the investigation, the trial, etc. It is arguably the most difficult area of our justice system in balancing the rights and compassion for the accuser, and the constitutionally guaranteed, innocent to proven guilty, right to face his accuser, accused. I'm not certain what I would do if faced with that choice. Take a pile of cash and deal with it, or forgo the cash, take time off of work, face testifying about something that would be very embarrasing, be challenged about my statements, etc.

QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Sep 27, 2005 -> 10:20 AM) My next question would have been are you able to pass some of these costs on to your customers but with annual contracts that doesn't appear possible. I know that Im probably the exception when i say the hit Im taking is negligable. Actually it's still a percentage increase, the same for all of us, it's just a bigger dollar amount for bigger users. In that regard, the increased costs are even worse for those just getting by, but who own vehicles, and almost zero for the really poor who rely on mass transportation. The other costs are hidden. You mention passing it on, one of my big chemical suppliers just announced a price increase almost across the board. I'll never know, but suspect some of that is increased energy costs to them.

QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Sep 27, 2005 -> 10:10 AM) Is that your personal travel or a business expense? Both. Mostly from my business. After pulling the rig which gets 9 mpg, I am running two engines (4 gph) and two diesel fired hot water heaters (3.4 gph). At night, I would also sometimes have a generator running to power lights. Another additional cost is the elimination of a tax break I was receiving on my diesel. Previously I did not have to pay road taxes on the fuel, because it was not being used "on the road". That program was eliminated. I have some annual contracts and basically have to suck it up and hope for lower fuel prices and improve work flows to decrease the work time with everything running. So in that regard, it has been a good thing. And as a sole proprietor, there really isn't much of a difference in personal and business, it's still money out of my pocket.

You can't just blame the Church for the secrecy. If the victims come forward, the Church can't hide it. Problem is, these are situations where both the accused and the accuser do not want publicity. I have a hard time finding fault with someone who does not want the public attention of coming forward and reporting having been abused.

QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Sep 27, 2005 -> 09:37 AM) I get really good gas mileage so the added hit for me is only about another 20-30 bucks a month at the pump. I can absorb that easily. My fuel bill is up almost $500/month from a year ago. I started to calculate how much stock I would need to own to cover that :headshake

QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Sep 27, 2005 -> 09:32 AM) I totally agree with you. Totally and completely. This is a first. Maybe a first in SL&P

I wonder how to make it better? If officials can't be trusted to have accurate information, would it be better to come on the air and say there is no accurate news available from New Orleans? We can't confirm the numbers dead, dying, raped, and OK? Would that cause more panic? Even just pointing a camera down a street doesn't give an accurate picture if it happens to show the only looter. I hope journalists will be studying this to improve their disaster coverage. I also blame it a bit on the business side. With so many competitors, all trying to attract eyeballs and ears, there is a crush of pressure on "getting the stories" and the "bigger and juicier" the better. When I tried to post that there were thousands of volunteers helping and that most people were good, I was shouted down with stories of death, dying, rapes, and murders.

Mariotti is the #1 most read columnist for Sox fans. LMAO at everyone that hates him and reads every one of his columns. Posts about his columns. Talks about his columns. Mommy, mommy, Jay is calling me names. Make him stop.

Cutting voters taxes and going into debt is a great way to get elected. Why not cut taxes and spending? Because our leaders want to buy us stuff with our money. One thing I always respected about the GOP was fiscal responsibility. Now they are the leaders in deficit spending and the DEMs are right there at the trough as well. FREE LUNCH! FREE LUNCH! Elect us and others down the road will pay your taxes and interets. FREE LUNCH! Eventually we have to pay all this back, with interest. Our leaders avoid that issue and try and convince us that someone else is going to pay it back. I don't mind cutting taxes, but you have to cut spending also. Come back to us after trimming the budget and give us the surplus. Don't borrow money from China, and give it to me, and try to convince me it's a free lunch.

QUOTE(EvilMonkey @ Sep 27, 2005 -> 07:00 AM) But Tex, that means that she would have to take personal responsibility! Don't you know that it is always George Bush's fault? On another note, the story is also illustrates a good reason for immigrants here to LEARN ENGLISH! Actually it's always Clinton's fault. Bin Laden, the economy, global warming

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Sep 27, 2005 -> 08:40 AM) ANYTIME I see something like that, Snopes is the first place I go to. They are the be all, end all for urban legends. And actually if you click the community link at the top of the page, they have a nice message board, with really really smart people. I love that site, it's always the first place I go. I just never thought to check there for the Kennedy/Lincoln list. BTW, I read John Jakes On Secret Service a few weeks back. A friend of mine likes historical novels and I decided to read one. Jakes works on keeping his novels historically accurate, which makes it a great way to brush up on history. I'm reading Savannah, A Gift for President Lincoln. Also a great read.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Sep 27, 2005 -> 08:27 AM) Just because there aren't facts to be checked, doesn't mean that her message gets off scott-free, without investigating whose paying her to talk. If you are getting funding from someone you are a lot more likely to be saying what you are told to say. Plus she HAS stated a LOT of opinions about Bush and the war, a lot more has been said than just bringing the boys home. She had made a ton of accusations and statements about the President and his administration. Actually her aim is the exact same as the swifties in one respect, they want to make sure that someone DOESN'T get elected. They were trying to take down John Kerry, Sheehan and company are trying to take down George Bush, and by that, whoever is going to run for election to succeed Bush. Good points. You must be getting better coverage. I have not seen or heard her make any accusations like the Swifties, it's been all opinions. Have you seen any evidence that her opinions have changed since she is receiving a broader audience brought on by being surrounded by media? I haven't, but that would be very interesting. I also haven't seen or heard her talking about issues unrelated to the war. But I imagine it's only time until she is asked. How is her position different that Rush, Hannity, Frankin, etc. They are true media whores, paid to state their opinions? Why don't we make the same arguments about them as we do private individuals like the Swifties and Sheehan? The EIB network pays Rush to make statements, should we assume that someone whose income is directly tied to their opinions would be more or less likely to bow to the corporate feeder? And by stating "paying her to talk". Are you implying she is a spokes model handed a script and reads it no matter what. How exactly are the "paying her"? Right now it seems that the media is following her around and pointing microphones in her face. I heaven't seen any paid advertisements like the swifties. Kap mentioned she was paid to be arrested. I wonder if he means someone said if you get arrested I'll give you $10,000??

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Sep 27, 2005 -> 08:15 AM) Snopes is all over that... http://www.snopes.com/history/american/linckenn.htm Thanks for posting that. I've seen that list for years and always wondered about some of the underlying "facts".
-
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Sep 27, 2005 -> 08:07 AM) And that was instantly used by the media to discredit the message that the Swifties were giving. They published the names of every rich rebublician who was funding them in the NYT. How come the same papers aren't mentioning that her primary funding is now coming from George Soros and Moveon.org? Isn't her funding just as relevant too? Yes it is. But here is the fundamental difference. With the swifties there were facts that could be checked, they basically discredited the entire Purple Heart process, and all that jazz. With this woman, it's her opinion about ending the war. Since there is no underlying facts to challenge, the pro war groups are attacking her personally as a media whore and just in it for the money. She just doesn't seem that savvy. I can't believe she is using Moore et. al. They are masters of self promotion, she's a rank amateur. It is my belief that she just wants to preserve the memory of her son, has a sincere desire to see the war end quickly so more moms aren't watching their children be lowered into the ground. Just like the swifties, there are well heeled individuals that see a story that the public can rally around and they are using that story to advance their beliefs. Another big difference in my mind. The Swifties were out to elect a President, what is she out to do? Help end a war sooner? Which should receive greater scrutiny?

QUOTE(ChiSoxyGirl @ Sep 26, 2005 -> 11:29 PM) Come on now Tex, who needs someone special when you can dance around and sing loudly and off key in your underwear? While most everyone here is now thinking happy thoughts of *you* dancing in your underwear, no one, and I mean no one(1), wants to think of *me* dancing in my underwear (1) Well maybe Rex Kickass, aka winodj

QUOTE(ChiSoxyGirl @ Sep 26, 2005 -> 11:01 PM) C'mon, Tom Jones is smooooooth man. Whenever I hear Joe Cocker I think of Belushi imitating him on SNL--not a feel good image. . . I'm just listening to Jones' version wishing someone special to me was here.

QUOTE(ChiSoxyGirl @ Sep 26, 2005 -> 06:48 PM) For my money, there's no better feel good song than, "You can leave your hat on" by Tom Jones. . . Better than Joe Cocker's version??

QUOTE(EvilMonkey @ Sep 26, 2005 -> 10:50 PM) Well, regardless of who took over who, she is sucking that teat for all it's worth. When the Moore-ons are done with her, she will end up a pathetic shell of a woman that no one will listen to, wondering where her 15-minutes went to. As for the Swifties, I didn't recall seeing very much about them that was positive, unless you watched Fox or listened to Rush. I agree 100% I have a hard time imagining her manipulating Moore and the rest of that set. Down here in Texas I didn't hear anything negative about the swifties. They were on every talk show, newspaper articles, and they played the commercials a few times. They had a story and the millionaire boys club lined up with tens of millions to tell their tale. I don't recall them being called media whore.

FWIW, I think President Bush is very honest. I like his character. Chaney, I'm not as certain about.

QUOTE(EvilMonkey @ Sep 26, 2005 -> 10:11 PM) C'mon, Tex. She has practacly taken over Michael Moore's website. She doesn't have to know how to use the system, she has more than enough enablers to help her. That's what I'm saying. Not everyone could manage this situation. All of a sudden she is surrounded by famous people who seemingly care about her, her son, and her message. Imagine the machine in place to use someone like this? Look how many people lined up to have the Swifties on their shows? They were everywhere. Yet some seem to think she is manipulating the situation for her profit, not the other way around. I don't think you can take the average person, put them into this giant pr machine, and have them handle the situation, I think she is being handled. I don't think she took over the Moore website, I think they took her over.
