Pet peeve of mine is incorrect displays of the US flag and these times always brings out some gaffs. First off, unless you are on a ship, the flag is at half staff not half mast. Raise it briskly all the way to the peak, then slowly lower to half staff. It must be raised again then brought down. The Flag in Mourning To place the flag at half staff, hoist it to the peak for an instant and lower it to a position half way between the top and bottom of the staff. The flag is to be raised again to the peak for a moment before it is lowered. On Memorial Day the flag is displayed at half staff until noon and at full staff from noon to sunset. The flag is to be flown at half staff in mourning for designated, principal government leaders and upon presidential or gubernatorial order. When used to cover a casket, the flag should be placed with the union at the head and over the left shoulder. It should not be lowered into the grave.

This is an awesome year for the casual Chicago baseball fan and a nightmare for the die hards. Somehow we know that one team will blow it and the other will move on. Most years one sucks and the other is mediocre. The best of times, the worst of times. Depends on October.

Give me an example of an overregulation? Is social engineering the government telling people who can marry and who cannot? Is it over regulation or social engineering telling a building owner he cannot deny someone an apartment based on their gender, sexual preference, or color? Is social engineering telling an employer he cannot refuse to hire Blacks, Poles, Italians, Sox Fans, etc? Is it social engineering to set a nationwide policy to immunize every person against polio? Is it over regulation to ban DDT from our environment? Both examples are programs the GOP fought against. Was it social engineering to support laws that banned interracial marriage (GOP) or social engineering to strike down those laws (Dems)? Nuke, do you believe, without regulations, that companies would do what is in the publics best interest?

Damn, I almost wish it was true Going into the season they must be working on projected revenues, and weather, injuries, hot rivalries, etc. will determine the gate. Cut backs are never moral boosters, but it's been happining in private enterprise for three decades, we call it "right sizing" and other euphamisms. Those companies make it through, why is the military different? Why is it the military always cries the loudest when their growth is slowed? I don't think any government agency should have a blank check.

And Nixon continued the policies. Why is it the military loses moral whenever they do not get everything they want? Reagan talked about the Peace Dividend after the USSR collapsed, but when the military was reduced back, the back end of the Reagan run up, the military lost moral? I thought a soldiers moral would be stronger. :headshake If we reduce force we'll be demoralized. If you cut funding for any weapons we'll be demoralized. But when the Dems want to raise taxes and pay for that stuff the Gop cries too much in taxes. At least the Dems have the guts to raise taxes to pay for stuff. I get demoralized when we go to war, which increases expenses and Bush decides to cut taxes. When are we going to pay for this war? 2525?

Damn no mail delivery. WASHINGTON (AP) - The federal government will be closed Friday in honor of former President Ronald Reagan, the White House announced Sunday. Exempt from the closing are operations department and agency heads determine ``should remain open for reasons of national security or defense or other essential public business,'' according to a proclamation issued by President Bush. Reagan's funeral service will take place Friday at the National Cathedral. His body will be returned to California later that day for burial at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library.

It may be closed if it's a federal holiday.

Gasoline would be a major target. I don't think our free speech adds much to the terrorists, and in fact, on balance, may make us safer. A terrorist would have plenty of time to research and plan an attack. He doesn't need newspapers or reporters to tell him targets. Also by discussing these things we can be prepared and possibly stop them.
