  1. I'm at close to 100%. I teach seniors with a lot who are college bound.
  2. If we look at this as binary, that we either play as business as usual in thirty stadiums and full air travel or not at all then the problem of course is there. I see a more cautious restart with less travel being something to consider.
  3. Naw, you don't need them fancy degrees to know which end of a mule to kick.
  4. On par with the spring break crowd that thought partying was more important.
  5. Thank you for the link.
  6. Who you will be taxing are the people who attend those services. The party that does that will never win another election. It also opens the door to taxing all non profits. Again, harming those people that donate to causes they believe in.
  7. Do you really care who you get the virus from? If they are within our borders, to keep everyone safe, everyone needs health care for the virus. So if you are worried about legitimate US citizens then you need to be worried about everyone here. While some businesses do knowingly hire undocumented workers (do we call murders illegals? it just seems weird calling someone illegal) a lot of businesses fall victim to counterfeit papers. We don't call a retail store corrupt for accepting a counterfeit $20 so I'm not certain calling every company who is found to have someone working for them without paperwork corrupt. Finally, our agriculture industry will collapse without migrant labor. If you recall just a couple months ago we had RECORD employment numbers. Greatest in history according to our President. If what Trump said is true, than it seems as if we are doing just fine with those workers here. Perhaps we should find a way that it makes more economic sense for someone to come here and work a minimum wage job than the current system that makes more sense to come here and take a high paying job. Currently we accept the foreign born doctor but want to make certain when the doctor hires a yardman or a nanny that it be an American kid. How about we create a system that does the opposite. Protects high paying jobs with a cheaper, more streamlined process for lower skill jobs. Back to the pandemic.
  8. I proposed a while back using five stadiums in the northeast with six teams at each stadium and they could rotate around. Again, without fans. They could film three games per day at each stadium. I was thinking using NY, Boston, Baltimore, and Philly.
  9. I wonder if that audio is available anywhere

    Pandemic Reading

Round Rock and Austin are growing quickly and getting expensive to live. They would be an easier drive to Dallas (if 35 is finished by then). There are two areas growing quickly in San Antonio. My district is part of the growth to the northwest. It certainly was lucky for many that the Weathers family was connected and had the resources to get helicopters moving half way around the world.
  11. I'm probably more optimistic about the stimulus package keeping businesses afloat.
  12. I believe we shouldn't lose sight of the post virus predictions. The numbers will be higher than pre virus as some companies will not survive, but I doubt it will be double digits.

I couldn't believe the Beck Weathers story. Being left for dead -- twice and surviving.

    The Beer Thread

I was using Untapped quite a bit but eventually stopped. I don't know why. This thread has me thirsty for a cold one.

    Pandemic Reading

After reading Into Thin Air I read another three or four accounts all revolving around that same storm on Everest. All were from different points of view and all reached different conclusions.
  17. I had a life changing meeting with Dolores Huerta. You are unfamiliar with her name but she co-founded American Farm Workers with Cesar Chavez. I never told my students that they should study so they didn't have to work in the fields, but I avoided that because I didn't want to insult their parents. But when she spoke about how important those migrant workers were to our LIVES it grabbed me. Not to our economy. To our lives. We can't feed ourselves in American today. We need imported foods and imported workers to keep our grocery stores stocked. How many hospital workers are here without documentation? How many undocumented workers touch your food on the way to your grocery store?
  18. The past couple of years my withholding have been nearly spot on. I've sent checks for less than $50 each time. Which means they do not have my direct deposit information and likely I'll see a check this summer.
  19. There is really no petro down here. There are a few off shore rigs that logistically it is easier to get to from South Padre, but again, nothing like Galveston. Basically its tourist and Space X.
  20. Brickhouse and Carey were my youth, Farmer was my adulthood.
  21. South Padre does not have 10% of the petro industry as you experienced a few hundred miles north in Galveston. There is a sizable group fighting turning the Port of Brownsville into a Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) terminal.
  22. I believe the changes we will see will be an acceleration in trends that are evolutionary not revolutionary. Curbside and home delivery of groceries were already in place. As consumers become more comfortable and enjoy the convenience it will grow at a fast rate than it otherwise would especially among consumers 50 and over. Cooking at home may piggyback on that with younger consumers. Business travel, which was already on a two decade downward slide will slip even faster.
  23. Big Bend Ranch State Park and Big Bend National Park are two of my favorite places on earth. We head out there every chance we get.
  24. I spent about 10 summers living on the island then moving inland the rest of the year. I still have a lot of friends down there. It's tough to get down as much as I would like. It's about a four hour drive from San Antonio. They keep the beaches clean near the developed areas. I would mostly drive north towards the Port Mansfield cut. I actually prefer the Laguna Madre side. As you go north the inter-coastal is incredible.
