  1. I believe we shouldn't lose sight of the post virus predictions. The numbers will be higher than pre virus as some companies will not survive, but I doubt it will be double digits.

I couldn't believe the Beck Weathers story. Being left for dead -- twice and surviving.

Middle Buffalo aka the guy we wish would post more. Happy Anniversary (belated)

I was using Untapped quite a bit but eventually stopped. I don't know why. This thread has me thirsty for a cold one.

After reading Into Thin Air I read another three or four accounts all revolving around that same storm on Everest. All were from different points of view and all reached different conclusions.
  6. I had a life changing meeting with Dolores Huerta. You are unfamiliar with her name but she co-founded American Farm Workers with Cesar Chavez. I never told my students that they should study so they didn't have to work in the fields, but I avoided that because I didn't want to insult their parents. But when she spoke about how important those migrant workers were to our LIVES it grabbed me. Not to our economy. To our lives. We can't feed ourselves in American today. We need imported foods and imported workers to keep our grocery stores stocked. How many hospital workers are here without documentation? How many undocumented workers touch your food on the way to your grocery store?
  7. The past couple of years my withholding have been nearly spot on. I've sent checks for less than $50 each time. Which means they do not have my direct deposit information and likely I'll see a check this summer.
  8. There is really no petro down here. There are a few off shore rigs that logistically it is easier to get to from South Padre, but again, nothing like Galveston. Basically its tourist and Space X.

Brickhouse and Carey were my youth, Farmer was my adulthood.
  10. South Padre does not have 10% of the petro industry as you experienced a few hundred miles north in Galveston. There is a sizable group fighting turning the Port of Brownsville into a Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) terminal.
  11. I believe the changes we will see will be an acceleration in trends that are evolutionary not revolutionary. Curbside and home delivery of groceries were already in place. As consumers become more comfortable and enjoy the convenience it will grow at a fast rate than it otherwise would especially among consumers 50 and over. Cooking at home may piggyback on that with younger consumers. Business travel, which was already on a two decade downward slide will slip even faster.
  12. Big Bend Ranch State Park and Big Bend National Park are two of my favorite places on earth. We head out there every chance we get.
  13. I spent about 10 summers living on the island then moving inland the rest of the year. I still have a lot of friends down there. It's tough to get down as much as I would like. It's about a four hour drive from San Antonio. They keep the beaches clean near the developed areas. I would mostly drive north towards the Port Mansfield cut. I actually prefer the Laguna Madre side. As you go north the inter-coastal is incredible.
  14. Looking at the second map. Those darker stretches in Texas are open ranch lands with very little development. The legend states it is measuring changes in travel. If folks in that county did not travel at all, and they still don't, it would be darkest because it did not change. Another possible explanation is if you need to travel 60 miles to the nearest full service grocery store, you will still need to travel that same 60 miles. It appears as if the areas of greatest population density, Houston, Dallas/Ft Worth, Austin, Rio Grande Valley, and San Antonio are travelling much less. I also see the stay at home orders are helping. Perhaps it gives cover for employees who are now forced to WFH
  15. I'm remotely watching a battle between primary property owners and second home property owners unfold on South Padre Island. I have empathy on both sides.
  16. Our pasta section has been full of lasagna but nothing else. Forget about tortillas that aren't fat free, gluten free, etc. The cereal aisle was pretty picked over. I the plus side I just taught my four year old grandson to ask Alexa to fart. Yeah, I'm the cool grandpa. I'm also learning to meditate, stretching a couple times a day, and really making progress on my next book.
  17. Well my governor decided to allow churches to meet. (As an ordained pastor I wonder if I can hold services at my local wine club for members only). Abbott went from not doing anything and allowing local governments to decide, to issuing statewide restrictions, to over ruling local leaders in about ten days. Although I do hope we can keep drive through margaritas. It was nice pulling away with a couple quality drinks. https://www.statesman.com/news/20200331/abbott-issues-statewide-stay-at-home-order-allows-religious-services
  18. Texas schools now closed until May 4th. I think that is the final nail in the already unlikely chance of finishing any sports seasons.
  19. Profits before patients.
  20. It was a nice dig at Trump. Although possibly unintentional.
  21. Anyone feel a moral obligation to spend the CARES checks to stimulate the economy?
  22. Thinking about China's numbers, how many died before there was a label for it?
  23. We are one of several school districts in San Antonio (7th biggest city in the US - largest school district)in two weeks we have deployed over 26,000 devices and counting. My district curriculum and instruction team has already sent me the next two weeks of high quality lessons to use, abuse, ignore. We're still working out grading and the amount of work expected. We're learning every day and improving the delivery. We've also handed out more than 250,000 meals.
  24. One of the sobering predictions is that every person in America will die or know someone who dies.
