  1. QUOTE (Armchair Hahn @ Jan 14, 2015 -> 04:13 PM) he comes back as a new breed of RP/OF...the White Sox are innovative, breaking barriers in creating hybrid relief pitchers/positional players.... 2 positions, 1 roster spot...BRILLIANT!! Come on, this deserved a nod and wink. Nice work. Hmm, 100 RBIs or some of the ladies he "dated"?
  2. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 14, 2015 -> 06:59 PM) How does that work? Handled in your class by grade only? Parents called? Suspension? Handled in class. As class ended I asked those that had cheated to stay (shocked looks) and said if you think you got away with it and want to leave, that's your choice. But I can't help you if you leave. One girl stayed who I had not caught. LOL. The two that left are being dealt with by the administration. The four that came clean lost all the points on the multiple choice part and will only receive a grade for their essays. Basically a 64 is their best grade. Enough for them all to still pass. The two that walked are in much hotter water. I have parents coming in on Tuesday.
  3. Teacher Tex "Is this really your work? Student "yes!" You answered all these on your own and these are you best answers? Yes, why? Well, I'm really surprised by your grade. I really, really studied for this test Really, you studied? Yes Then I am even more surprised then, you only have one correct answer! Stunned look Earlier Tex is running off new copies of test questions at 7:00 am Last night Tex gets message with a Twitter screen capture of another student's answer document from another class who took the test earlier that day. Yeah school districts keep tabs on these things. Nailed seven in my class for cheating. Best of all, even if I hadn't changed the test, they would only have earned a 50.
  4. Technically I jumped the gun on grandpa Tex. That will actually happen in August.
  5. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 13, 2015 -> 03:38 PM) Being in a high crime area would come no where near explaining those trends especially since they're all outside of the state of Illinois. The guns are not being used anywhere near the area they're being purchased, they're bought out of state and then wind up as evidence in the city of Chicago. You still need to prove that the dealer is doing something wrong. A lot of drunk drivers drive through White Castle, but that doesn't really have anything to do with White Castle. As a scientist you understand the difficulties in proving causation. You can't just look at A and B and immediately say with 100% certainty that A caused B.
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 14, 2015 -> 01:00 PM) But as I noted, how many nonreligious shelters or food pantries could you fund with the several hundred billion dollars per year that goes to churches in this country? Who are you going to raise taxes on?
  7. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 11, 2015 -> 11:45 PM) found these quotes from the comments section of a yahoo question on the topic....take them for what they're worth!!! By percentage of Gross National Income, the top most charitable nations in the world are among the least religious nations on earth. And guess what, the largest recipients of these money also happen to be among the most religious nations on earth. It is funny how the world works. Bill Gates, the most well known atheist in the world, gives more money away than anyone else on the planet Earth. Also, "Christians" like yourself give to feel better about yourself, I volunteer to make those that are less fortunate feel better about themselves, which do you think is a more generous act? Here's a hint, most modern "Christians" are selfish egotists. Believers, don't be afraid to question religion. If God is so almighty, why must he ask people for their money? Or is bleeding mostly the poor and middle class for thousands of years, God's special type of love? if you exclude donating money to churches which for some reason is labeled charity, then atheists actually do give more money than religious people. i dont think donating money to churches should count as charity because the churches just spend it on themselves rather than helping other people One thing of note, Gates' religious point of view change came with the birth of his first child. He was generally, and accurately, described as non religious (waste of time on Sunday when you could be working) or even an atheist. How many non religious based shelters do you find around a city? Food pantries? That's my main point. Churches generally are a gathering spot for communities to do good deeds directly in the community. As a nation we just don't have time for civic and fraternal groups like we use to. The Masons, Elks, Moose, etc all have declining memberships.
  8. I lost count, I was having so much fun. I figure if you can have one funny post in ten years, I should fully appreciate it.
  9. QUOTE (Douglas Rome @ Jan 14, 2015 -> 05:20 AM) 4mil for a slug is obscene. I just shake my head over these ridiculous contracts; it ain't my money, or is it? thanks, douglas I'm going to start a new thread about ball player's money No thank you Dougles With all the gross revenues coming in and teams wanting to win "for the fans", spending the money for talent is probably the right thing to do. They could roll back ticket prices but Sox fans have proven that if the team is not winning $1 tickets won't even sell. I believe the best way to look at it is how does that contract compare to other players that other teams are paying. And it isn't really out of line. As they say "it's good paying work if you can get it". He's probably one of the top 1,000 baseball players in the world right now, out of four billion people, that ain't too shabby.
  10. The Hall of Fame is a celebration of baseball and if the name is to be believed, fame. Fifty years from now do we want fans to know who MB was and what he meant to the game? Has his career been that good? That unique? There are guys in the HoF now that I don't want my great grandkids thinking was what makes baseball great. I'd rather have them see a bust of MB. But I really doubt it would ever happen. We value stats over everything else, and that is probably what should happen. But I'm certain that means the people who have really made baseball great through the years will be missed while those that gave the game a black eye will be there.
  11. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jan 13, 2015 -> 02:15 PM) I'm not a gun person but I presume the argument of stop selling at stores that sell to criminals will mean that any gun store in an area with a high crime rate will close (than as those stores close, they'll buy at the stores next closest and we'll see those stores crime rates increase, etc, until we basically have decided that you can't own guns in empovershed areas (since those typically are the areas with the highest gun rates). I'm fairly certain that sort of policy won't end up working. I'm not an expert either but if you remember to those days when you were underage, there are stores that were easier to buy beer from when you were underage and the rest. Maybe some of these stores are also like that. Bring in some reasonably close document and check out. There is probably a way to look at anomalies in the area.
  12. Great post SS in the French thread in the 'buster.
  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 13, 2015 -> 10:05 AM) This post will change your mind, click the link and see what happens next!!! Wow, we agree on something in the 'buster. I think the article suffers from some circular reasoning, but not bad.
  14. What factors would you look for in what team you play for? I already said money, money, and more money. But if things were close I would consider playing time, who the organization had in the minors, the manager, my future team mates, contender, stadium suits my game, year round living options, golf courses, but only if the money was good. So I would probably be looking for teams in the south (sorry Sox).
  15. If I were him, I'd keep in shape for a stretch run signing. What are his options if someone comes a calling?
  16. There is a general problem with lists like this, you really have clumps of teams basically tied then they break them down. Splitting hairs. I like the rotation but until guys get to camp and you see what kind of shape they are in. It's 50% past history, 30% projection, and 20% luck.
  17. QUOTE (LDF @ Jan 12, 2015 -> 11:03 AM) really lets look at it from a different point of view. how would this forum be if everyone is a "yes sir" and must follow the mods point of view. here it was a brawl on a saturday night and the next day it was the emotions were gone. difference of opinion helps conversation. the other thing, the posters here knows their stuff, no pulling wool over there eyes. IMHO it would be terrible especially in the 'buster. On your last point one thing we worry about is a kind of group think sets in and certain things are accepted and if you do not it will get beat into you. So again IMHO guys like Greg that continue to defend Ozzie are good. The stats and visual sets are both necessary. The optimists and the pessimists. The carnivores and the herbivores. I especially appreciate the herbivores because it leaves more tasty animals for hungry Texans to bbq.
  18. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jan 11, 2015 -> 09:29 PM) The guns that are purchased legally and then "stolen". So, not much of a chain of command. That is a problem and really conflicts with my usual punish the guilty not the victim. I really wish there was a way of sorting the two. I do think there should be some sort of limit. Common sense comes into play. No one has a gun stolen every week for years. While not perfect and I'd have several complaints about it a limit on how many guns you can own at one time and each stolen gun reduces your total allowed would be interesting to explore. I really dislike punishing innocent people but it gets frustrating not being able to sort the guilty from the victims.
  19. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jan 12, 2015 -> 09:23 AM) I found Soxtalk before WSI and never looked for anything else. The way you guys talk about it is intriguing, though -- sometimes I want to start posting there just to see how long it takes me to get banned. I believe one thing that has really helped Soxtalk are the disagreements behind the scenes about who and what should be allowed and what needs to end. By the time anything is actually done someone has to really cross everyone's lines, and looking at mod list, you know we never agree on anything. I remember being the lone holdout on banning one poster. I sent him a PM and he basically told me to f*** off. I would sometimes post over there and really thought I would be banned in 2005. One of their posters kept predicting the Sox would miss the playoffs. One of the mods threatened that if the team made the playoffs he would be banned and if they missed he could stay. I posted they had that really backwards, why keep a guy around saying "I told you so" when the board would be semi-suicidal after such a collapse? Ban him if he was right. A couple people immediately posted goodbye messages to me but they never got around to banning. I think I still have an account there but I haven't been there in years.
  20. Depending on the weight and size over nighting a part would still put you way ahead cost-wise.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 6, 2015 -> 09:37 AM) What a load of crap. Baseball ignored this for generations. That isn't our fault. That it the fault of baseball and even the writers who ignored it in order to not burn bridges and sources. Now the writers are frustrated because their ballots are screwed up with too many players because of the divide on how to handle the steroid era. Just because baseball made mistakes in the past, also doesn't mean it is OK to keep making them. Just because we don't know who did in the past, doesn't mean we can punish the ones we know did, and the ones we know, that they knew, they were cheating the system. This false equivalency between the good ol' days and today doesn't fly with me. There is a clear divide between the drugs of the modern era and things like amphetamines of the old days. Baseball made its bed, it can sleep in it. I really believe there needs to be an exhibit about this era and the players who achieved amazing results. I'd even like to see baseball accept some of the responsibility. Not a hall of shame, but recognize what has become a major chapter in baseball history. I would also include guys like Pete Rose in a similar section.
  22. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 11, 2015 -> 07:45 PM) I had intended on posting this exact post, except "I hate all of you" instead of "f*** all of you guys" I hate you Tex Another power hungry social climbing moderator Newcomers I challenge you to write a post in every forum around here before the end of January. There are conversations that range from thought provoking to Y2HH and I just yelling and him not making sense; from funny to poignant. The season hasn't started and it's a great time to really get to know the folks around here.
  23. As a joke when asked who would fill in the charitable works after religion is eradicated you picked someone who clearly believes in God. LOL what a great sense of humor. How funny. Find a current quote where Gates says he doesn't believe in God. After having a child and being involved in charities around the world he has shifted from agnostic to believing. I guess if your wife was a believer you will change like you believe Gates has. I don't think he is doing it because of his wife. You also predicted that after religion is wiped out that people would fill that void. Yet you can't explain why those people aren't already doing charitable deeds. To ignore all the good deeds that people do as part of their faith is silly. I at least admitted that people form perverted religious views and harm people. You even refuse to admit that churches do good works around the world.
  24. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 11, 2015 -> 04:13 PM) In Knoxville TN, and I believe here as well, there are "nuisance" laws, where they've shut down businesses without the business committing a crime specifically because many crimes are committed there. They were regularly used against bars that often had people arrested for selling drugs, bars that commonly had fights, and a "glassware/smoking supplies" dealer that was basically selling all the legal accessories that go along with marijuana use but never actually selling the weed themselves. Those are actually fairly useful tools for law enforcement because it means that business owners can't just "look the other way" when they know things are regularly happening on their property, they need to have some level of control over it. You can legitimately quarrel with how they're used, but this is quite standard in the parts of the country where I've lived. Good point. The difference I see in your examples is in the case of the bars, crimes were happening in the business. In the gun shop examples straw buyers were then reselling the guns elsewhere, not on the premises. I agree that law enforcement should be investigating the crap out of that gun dealer, but that should result in finding violations.
  25. keep trying. You never answered, who is going to fill the void of good works after religion is ended and why aren't they doing it now?
