  1. QUOTE (LDF @ Dec 30, 2014 -> 01:25 PM) btw, that is a great song from phil collins.
  2. During the latter half of the last century the team contended about once a decade. It's about time again.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 31, 2014 -> 09:31 AM) We'll find out a lot about how good of a manager Robin is this year. So far he has a 2012 where he kept a clearly inferior team in the race until the last week of the season, in his favor. He also did a good job of keeping a team that had no chance at contending in 2014 playing hard until the last day of the season, even overcoming some pretty big injuries to key players. Ventura has 2013 which was just a disastrous meltdown and the end of 2012 going against him. Guillen has 2005 and what I thought was his best managing job in 2008 going for him. He has the 2007 collapse, along with all of the other self-created external messes that took away from the team, and biggest of all, negotiating a contract with another team while he was still a member of the White Sox. He had clearly lost the team by the end of his time here because he was more worried about himself than the people signing his paycheck. So far Guillen wins on the World Series and Blackout teams, but Ventura hasn't had anywhere near the talent that Ozzie did, until maybe this year. Again, we will learn about how good Robin really is this year.
  4. QUOTE (Douglas Rome @ Dec 30, 2014 -> 05:41 AM) I been around a long time, and I can say the Ozzie years were the most entertaining since I was a little kid. Regardless of his perception with most folks here, he did keep the Sox on the front page and on the AM radio stations. Name me one Sox manager in the last 50yrs who anybody cared about listening to? I know what you are going to say, all you care about is winning, but there's more to it than that, it also has to be provacative. thanks, douglas Name a manager in the past fifty years who after being told no on a contract extension tanked the rest of a season to get out of his last year? He was also one of the most undisciplined manager in the team's history. How could he enforce any rules when he was always in some trouble or another?
  5. Very scary on the roads in Texas
  6. Really thought I would find something else to write about, but I guess this is it.
  7. QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 16, 2014 -> 09:39 PM) You have to define the role in the bullpen. You don't need to do it by innings. The pitchers are most effective when they know what the role is, such as if they have a lead and need someone in the 7th and the good hitters are up, Duke is in. If it's the same situation but the bottom of the order is up Petricka is in. Interesting. I'm going to think about this a bit but my first reaction is the pitcher has time to physically warm up, are you suggesting that is not sufficient time to also mentally warm up? I'm all about putting people in positions to be successful. Perhaps this is one of those traits that great bull pen guys have that mediocre ones do not, the ability to mentally be ready in four or five minutes. Another top of the head thought, in baseball the situation changes with each batter, with each pitch. If you are in the pen warming up because it is the eight inning and that is your role, in a matter of three pitches the situation could change from no one on base to bases loaded in a blink of an eye. I believe I agree that the best possible scenario is a guy having maximum time to prepare for the situation, I just don't think that really can happen much in the real world.
  8. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 27, 2014 -> 09:01 PM) Question. Did you forgot how the thread works? Wouldn't that be a "v" or violin or was that play me a song?
  9. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 27, 2014 -> 02:47 PM) Give me an example. If you think tetrahydrogestrinone belongs in the hall of fame, or you think Greg Maddux does not belong there, tell me why. You are a writer covering the Cubs in Chicago and think Sosa should not be in the HoF. The Cubs management believes it will sell tickets, etc etc. You will not be welcome around their clubhouse if your no to Sosa vote is made public.
  10. On the other hand, I moved a couple hundred miles north to south Texas (figure that one out). Now I get to experience the occasional freezing temps and perhaps some snow. Something that was a once in a couple decades occurrence on the border.
  11. Can you hook me up with free wifi?
  12. Knowing someone else is lurking makes posting in this thread a time test
  13. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 27, 2014 -> 09:54 AM) If you're not willing to stand behind your vote then I don't believe you think it's the "right" one. Or the truly right vote isn't the popular vote. Why piss off your readers to do the right thing? Secret ballots are how we decide most elections. I would rather they vote and not be able to use it as a marketing piece for their careers.
  14. Totally into being far away from people next week, probably in the deserts of Big Bend
  15. I told North Korea not to switch to Comcast
  16. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Dec 19, 2014 -> 03:34 PM) I get all my phones on discount w/ a 2-year contract. I've never paid full price for a phone. You realize the carriers have built in part of the phone in their rates?
  17. perhaps getting to ten score replies will propel this thread/
  18. As many know I teach high school in San Antonio. As I was walking down the hall I heard a kid greet another friend by saying Hi n****! Now that word is like nails on a chalkboard to a 50+ year old. I spin around to see two nerdy white freshman do a fist bump. On top of it all, today is a fundraiser and they are wearing pajamas. WTF?!
  19. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Dec 19, 2014 -> 11:28 AM) Any good movie recs? The Interview
  20. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 18, 2014 -> 03:46 PM) But it wasn't better because his KIDS took over, it was better because it was better. That they were his children and hired a competent president to take over is remarkable. BUt the problem is with kids who have not made their wealth elsewhere is the team is their entire identity. Sell the team? It would be unfathomable. The kids made moves that the old man would never have allowed. His allegiance to Bob Pulford was mind blowing, plus is love for the Sutter family smh. The old man couldn't figure out the media, etc. He has to go down as one of the wirtz owners in all sports.
  21. Christmas in San Antonio means . . . Rounds of golf at Cedar Creek, Republic, and Brackenridge Park. Boat trip down River Walk, and New Years in Big Bend.
  22. When I was 16, (this is a cool spin on this thread), Veeck's strategy was "rent a player". This was the South Side Hit Men, and I still get chills as I type that. Singing with Nancy Fox. I received my driver's license and we started going to 4-5 games a week from the far north burbs. The team won 90 games, was in first place mid August but fell 12 games short of the Royals.
  23. This one had a CD/DVD drive. At first I was taken back by the 500MG HD but now that I am using a network drive along with Google Drive and DropBox a large capacity internal HD does not seems necessary.
