  1. Another winter thread begins. I wonder how fast the new posters will figure this out.
  2. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 08:08 AM) Brandy by the Looking Glass, love that song and it's great for Karokee! Brandy, that's a fine choice, what a good choice she would be.
  3. I have a really boring list this year. I switched schools and went from purple and gray to red and white. I also have lost 35 pounds so far. So clothes are on my list. BTW, for the golfers, I picked up a Zero Restriction Goretex rain suit. Expensive, but for playing, it is the best I have ever worn. Worth asking your rich relatives for. Jacket and pants will set you back $600 - $700. High school golf is year round in Texas so I am out coaching in all weather, from the 100s to the just above freezing and misty. With an insulating layer, this was great down to the low 40s this week. Without an insulating layer, it will be fine into the 80s.
  4. The team that signs him will have to deal with the controversy, the protests, and all the distractions. He's just not worth it now, and won't be next season.
  5. I had an interesting discussion with some of my seniors yesterday. We are reading Antigone and discussing civil obedience vs civil disobedience and using Howard Zinn's 1970 essay "The Problem is Civil Obedience" as an entry to the topic. To get the discussion rolling I asked them to name an event in American history that was a classic act of civil disobedience. After a couple of false starts someone hit my target, the Boston Tea Party. That was basically a bunch of white people, wearing masks and costumes, looting a merchant ship, destroying the cargo, and breaking the law. Not much different than Ferguson. Here is part of Zinn's essay and perhaps the most recognizable part. Great discussion.

    Hamburgers

I wish I could remember the name of the place. It was near Elmhurst, probably south of Elmhurst actually. You picked out the cut of beef you wanted, added various fats, seasoning, etc. they dumped it in the meat grinder and would single, double, or triple grind it. From there it was formed into a patty and dropped on their flattop and fried up. Talk about not wanting anything else on the burger. Twenty years ago I think they were getting $7 for basically a 1/4 pound burger. I love the little mom and pop places that can really make a burger. There was a place in Donna Texas we would go. It's a fast food setup, order at the counter and they will call your name to pick up your order. The entire menu is single or double hamburger, single or double cheeseburger, fries, onion rings, or chips, and a can of soda from the refrigerator. Cash only, exact change preferred ("You've been here dozens of times, you don't know it will cost $6.63? Bring exact change next time lol). Community tables to fit more people. Basically just 6' Sam's Club folding tables pushed together in 18' rows inside and ten or so wooden picnic tables outside that you are expected to share (which everyone does). It was a grocery store and to keep that designation they have a small bookcase with a few items that they dust every few weeks. When the winter Texans are in town you will wait for a half hour to order and another half hour to have your food arrive. The place is so friendly that even with that wait with so many people to talk to the wait doesn't seem that bad. Their annual decorating and advertising budget is $12.99 (they bought some Christmas lights last year). Open from 11:00 to 3:00 each day. As they tell it, they make all the money they can spend and are only opened four hours a day. Why be open longer? Go home and cook a dinner for your family!
  7. QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 2, 2014 -> 09:00 PM) I agree. so instead I'll say Sweet Melissa by the Allman brothers or Peggy Sue/Cindy Lu (depnding on your favorite version) by Buddy Holly Sweet Melissa! Man, I change my vote.
  8. As a teacher of children who are growing up in a digital world, this is serious stuff. The choices when being bullied are to isolate yourself from the rest of your peers and society and stay offline, or face some terrible crap.
  9. Top song about a woman with the woman's name in the title. I'm going with the Rolling Stones Angie.

Whataburger takes the top 5 spots in my fast food burger list. If you have a second category for top "Value .99 $1" burger the McDouble wins it for me.
  11. San Antonio 7th largest city in the US, huge sports town. Great early and late season weather.
  12. I am not certain what it will take until the pendulum swings back to statesmanship and cooperation from the present state. At some point healthcare will be like Social Security, both sides will threaten that the other plans on taking it away.
  13. I friend of mine and former coworker passed the bar after graduating with honors from SMU. Even better, he has a father in law that owns a large law form.
  14. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 14, 2014 -> 02:35 PM) So what, it's 50 degrees? We got all the way down to a light freeze in San Antonio.
  15. While Balta's uninsured comment was not directed at this, it does highlight why everyone benefits when people have insurance and receive treatment. People who can not afford treatment continue on and infect others, increasing the cost for everyone.
  16. Moving 250 miles north means about 20 degrees colder.
  17. You have to believe he will win a couple before his career is over. Hopefully with the Sox.
  18. The faulty logic in a baseball players needs to be on a playoff or contending team is one player on a baseball team cannot influence the team results as much as on a basketball team. I recognize a basketball player being able to put the team on his back and get them to the playoffs, but that isn't possible in most other sports.
  19. Well deserved under the current rules for the award.

    100,000.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 31, 2014 -> 12:38 PM) Come on grandpa, talk to us about posting on the walls of caves! Some ancient toddler got his butt spanked for writing on the walls, hundreds of years later we marvel at them and wonder what they mean.
  21. While working for the Boy Scouts I was assigned as the liaison with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints aka Mormons. About have of the committee were scientists from the local university. I loved how they balanced their religious and scientific views. The statement was simple, science teaches us how, religion teaches us why. That has stuck with me. It sums up my beliefs very well.

    100,000.

I remember when 10,000 was a really big deal.
  23. I find it interesting that our friends the Saudis behead about eighty "criminals" per year for things you don't even get arrested for in the U.S. and we never complain. I wonder why.
