  1. RexKickass was WinoDJ back in the day. It's in my coffee table book, Posters of Soxtalk.
  2. QUOTE (oldsox @ Jun 18, 2014 -> 03:25 PM) What do Moderaters do? buy beer for the admins, correct speling errors (hey, new guys, get that for me), pin stuff then get yelled at for pinning too much stuff, answer the endless he's hurting me messages, stuff like that. Welcome
  3. I started looking for a high school coaching position and can't believe within two weeks I've been offered the head position at a really solid high school in San Antonio. As I was discussing the requirements for the job I was laughing how seemingly unrelated experiences helped me land the position. Networking for donations of resources? Boy Scouts of America. Dealing with private clubs? Men's Golf Association president and board of governors member at a private club. Previous coaching experience? Check. The school even needed a teacher for my subject. I can't wait to get started.
  4. Here I was on soxtalk pledge day. Thanks, y'all.
  5. President of the United States Yes sir, not on the same scale.
  6. Nixon's secretary accidentally erased 5 minutes of a crucial tape and another 18 minutes were missing from another. Stuff like that happens all the time. It doesn't mean it was on purpose.
  7. Once there is a change of administration and they fire all the employee things will change.
  8. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jun 9, 2014 -> 02:36 PM) Do you have the expectation that he will dominate every start? Does he tend to? Can he still shut teams down when he's not on? Does he compare favorably to the top pitchers in the game? Is he a no-brainer to pitch game 1 of a playoff series? Does he consistently take the ball? Is he regularly going deep into games? Has he consistently achieved those criteria for three (five) or more full seasons? If you answer yes to all these questions then you have an ace on your hands. The only question with Sale is his durability and I'm not ready to knock him for that yet. You added durability, so adding a requirement that includes three, five, however many seasons seems fair. Just by adding one criteria and he's no longer an ace. Which is why I find the whole who is an ace debate almost meaningless. You can't even have a debate about whether or not a player is an "ace" until you agree on a definition of an "ace". I really like your list, it is about as good as anyone has offered, yet there are so many vague terms that are up to (mis)interpretation. "tend to" "compare favorably" "shut teams down" "No-brainer to start" (no one on those Atlanta Brave staffs would be an Ace), "consistently", "going deep". All those would need to be parsed. A lot of people here will disagree, but I would add an "ace" (which to me includes that something extra, beyond just great stats) puts his team in position to win. He may give up five runs in a blowout, but only one in a tight game. The guys that rise to the occasion. I'd use the term to describe those pitchers who seem to give the offense an extra boost. The guys the team feels confidence behind. Then I would balance it all, not needing to say yes to each and every criteria. And BTW, FWIW, based on how I would define the term, Sale has pitched like an ace the past 2+ seasons.
  9. The Texas GOP platform includes "Reparative Therapy" for gays and a GOP candidate in Oklahoma wouldn't have a problem with a little Old Testament stoning. How will this play out nationally? Is this a good strategy for the GOP? Obviously of the GOP fringe groups I wish the Log Cabin Republicans were more influential than the Tea Party. I believe that either party pushing further to the extreme is bad for the country. I'd like to see both parties rushing to grab the middle ground instead of moving the other way.
  10. It would probably make a better off season thread but removing money from the situation, what would baseball look like? I happen to be in favor of players wanting to make a lot of money. Without that motive, we would have way more Lebron situations with players flocking together in certain cities and the balance of competition would be even worse than it is now. But the original question does highlight that with a better contract Rios could have brought back some talent. There are some balance scales at work there.

Speaking of honey, as my wife and I travel each summer we pick up honey from local producers, you really can taste a difference.
  12. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 3, 2014 -> 01:19 PM) The conspiracy theorist in me thinks this was a ploy to get the VA mess out of the papers. I wish it would take something like that. The VA mess will be forgotten too soon regardless of what other news is out there.
  13. That is a problem. The whole Gitmo situation is a problem.
  14. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jun 2, 2014 -> 09:39 PM) I don't have a problem with them bringing him back. I have a problem with rules being treated as mere suggestions, as usual by this president. What rule was broken?
  15. To me defining words like ace is kind of a pointless exercise. He fits some of what I would call an ace, not others. But there is no definitive definition that all fans would ever agree on. I do know this, with a rotation of five MB's, a team would win a lot of pennants over a long time.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jun 2, 2014 -> 07:45 AM) Holy Jebus...only 1600 calories a day? I'd starve to death. I second what you said about keeping track, it makes you look at things like cookies and say, "It's just not worth it", considering 2-3 little cookies is usually a few hundred calories, half of which are fat calories...for that I could drink 3 light beers and break even. I'll take the beer please. You also eat back the exercise calories. Bottom line you have to be in a calorie deficit to lose weight. I'm not having a problem most days staying under 1,700 calories. I've all but eliminated sodas, and other calorie wasters.
  17. Should it be policy to decide whether we attempt to bring back prisoners of war or not based on comments and suspicions? Should we have a trial without the soldier present and say meh, keep him? Or should we bring the soldier back and prosecute him if there is sufficient evidence? The decision seems pretty easy to me. I hope every President would do the same thing. Put the full force and commitment of the US in bringing home every US prisoner being held by hostile nations. If one or more are later prosecuted for crimes, at least they are in the hands of the US and not the enemy.
  18. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jun 2, 2014 -> 07:17 AM) 2012 & 2013 were never the problems with the contract. It was 2014 & 2015 when he is making $18 and $19 million per year. It takes a hell of a year to be worth that much money and he is somehow earning every penny so far. That's one way to look at the contract. Most people expected him to outearn the first couple seasons and be under the last two. Contracts aren't written for how a player is projected to play each season, but what fits best for the club and sometimes the player. As the club would you rather pay more now or later when an insured injury may end the career?
  19. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/baseball/mlb/players/6525/ 15 seasons, only one sub .500 season. Starts 30+ games a year - every year, another one for the "if he played in NY or Boston he'd be famous" award. I know this may end with the he should or should not be on the roster, personally that was years ago now, so who cares. But damn, pitchers like that are so rare. I'm just looking around the league today looking for things to cheer about and took a minute to see his career stacked up.
  20. I'm too old for this. Passing out and checking my FB newsfeed later may be batter for my health.
  21. I'm in Spurs country and they are about the only Texas team that has replaced my boyhood team. From a Spurs fan, Heat in 5. The Spurs are Utah circa 1998. The Heat have been waiting around for this moment.

All of the beneficial changes I made to my diet were a result of tracking my calories and trying to stay around 1,600 net calories to lose 2 pounds per week. Once you start logging in the calories you realize which foods and drinks are most important to you.
  23. QUOTE (greg775 @ May 31, 2014 -> 02:25 PM) But U of Kansas is going to lose tons of faculty over this policy and no other states are enacting it. Don't you think Kansas once again is acting like a bunch of clowns? First off, no they won't. It is about the worst time in academic history for a professor to be looking for employment. It's the classic case of the employer holding all the power. So don't worry too much. Sadly, the few they will lose will probably be their best as far as research is concerned. There is a surplus of PhDs currently looking for faculty positions. The past generation or two has been pushed to earn college degrees. The new HS diploma is the BA, the new BS is a MS, and the new MS is a PhD. That's not necessarily a bad thing for the country, but it is terrible on a personal level as we adjust to this new economy of formal education. We can't built things cheaper than elsewhere but we can educate. Now to turn that advantage into a thriving economy.
  24. It sounds like Jack was a disgruntled patient at some time. It seems that today pitchers have to abuse their bodies to stay in the game. The very things that could help extend their careers would make them less effective as pitchers which would end their careers.
