MLB 2014 Injuries
QUOTE (ptatc @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 02:18 PM) All of the old timers think that. The problem with that is they always threw that much and the guys who couldn't got weeded out early on. Today the pitchers are coddled, not used to it, and they are trying to save every pitcher. So the ones who would have been hurt early are still pitching and can't take that workload. But who are they ahead of? Guys that can take the strain but aren't chosen? Or have we eliminated pitchers that are workhorses?

Job Hunt Thread
I wished I had more time now to reply, I will add a couple more in a PM this weekend. First off college grads have been having all sorts of problems the past decade it seems like. My thoughts, and remember I don't know you are . . . Find a job, any job to get in the job market. Start by researching best firms to work for in X. Or best firms to work for with autism. Narrow it down, forget for a moment that you are a chemical engineer and get working. Next, think about jobs that would prove that your negative isn't a negative. Sales jobs may be way out of your comfort level, but they are easy to get, and since you income is zero now, a straight commission type thing won't be a financial risk. I hired a lot of people as a General Manager for a large regional company. I was a sucker for someone with something to prove and a chip on their shoulder. If I was convinced you wanted a chance to prove the world wrong, you made my final cut. I'll take hard work and a underdog mentality every time if you want to prove the world wrong. (probably why I am a Sox fan). The toughest job to find is the one when you aren't working. More than a few people here will tell you tales of being out of work for a while, getting a job, and having three more offers that month. But go somewhere, anywhere, and start punching a time clock. As you said, a lot of people have autistic disorders. Most find their way in the world. Find jobs, date, get married, have kids, and live happily ever after. It will happen for you.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 04:49 PM) (I try to buy and hold for 8-10 years Which means you bought your first car at what, 10?! I hate vehicles and everything about them. I was never a "car guy". They are a necessary evil that are useful like a hammer, not exotic, exciting, or whatever. That has saved me thousands. Everyone I know that has been in the car business tells me a variation on this rule of thumb. Take care of friends, family, and referals and pound anyone else as hard as you can.

MLB 2014 Injuries
QUOTE (LDF @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 06:31 AM) I am going to ask of those posters who are way smarter than I to answer this, is it the weather or is it the pitching stress of learning different types of pitches at the young age ? I had a great opportunity to meet Nolan Ryan at his Bassin-Inn Restaurant on Choke Canyon Lake (now closed sadly). Someone asked why pitchers seem to get injured more today (circa 2003) than when he was playing. His reply was that we pamper kids too much. He through hundreds of balls a day, year round, growing up. He believed the best way to develop pitching muscles is to use pitching muscles. His .02

Will Sox be buyers, not sellers, at the trade deadline?
QUOTE (Vance Law @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 02:40 PM) What happens if they get hot and are actually in 1st place around the deadline? They probably stand pat on a couple guys. But there needs to be a couple upgrades before this team has a true chance.

NBA Thread 2013-2014
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 02:22 PM) Well, let's be honest, it is a bit faux outrage. This dude's been doing this kind of stuff for decades and the drum beat to get him out of the league never started until now and he was out of the league in what, 4 days? I'm not at all suggesting it's unjustified by the way. I'm just saying I can see Cuban's argument about how this might play out in the future, depending on what by-law/provision they used here. Isn't this a case of running out of chances? I assume he has been warned, privately probably, about these sorts of actions.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 02:02 PM) The First Amendment guarantees a right to free speech without criticism or response, obviously. No, please don't point out the glaring internal conflict in that thought. It guarantees you can criticize the government. It doesn't require a business to support your views or offer a stage for them. If you are working at McDonalds and telling people the food is bad for you, it will make you obese, you can't expect to remain in the job. The league is not a collection of independent businesses. When an owner's actions are detrimental to the league, stuff will, and should happen.

Scott Carroll To MLB
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 04:19 PM) JJ Stankevitz @JJStankevitz 45s #WhiteSox pitcher Scott Carroll still has something to prove: "One time's good, but I want to show them that I can do it consistently." Great thing to say. Now back it up big boy.

Scott Carroll To MLB
This is a season of unexpected results and the birth of a beast. It's turning out to be a way better summer than I expected and I'm the Kumbaya singing manic. Perhaps he finds a spot in the pen at some point. Seriously, its the lowest hurdle to get over right now.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 24, 2014 -> 06:06 AM) Anyone recommend a late model small truck? I've been looking at frontier, Tacoma, Colorado but don't really know anything about this segment. The Ford truck forum I sometimes drop into has a big group of guys that love their small Fords. I'm on my second full size Ford F-150 and love it. I know my Ecology card is revoked when I make myself a cup of coffee in my Keurig and take it out to my truck to drive to work. I try to make it up in other areas. Check the specs for why you are considering a truck. If you are planning to tow with it, check the capacity. If you are thinking of loading bricks in the bed, check the capacity. I tow 5,000 pounds all summer so comfortable towing was important to me, as well as four and sometime five passenger comfort. Obviously that won't happen wirh a small truck. Also think about tossing stuff in the bed unlocked. I have a tonneau cover in mine and I don't mind leaving some things back there, but stuff like golf clubs, if I stop somewhere, I have to toss them on the floor of the cab. Overall I love having a truck. But I'm down in pick up country where parking lots and everything else are built with lots of pickups in mind. I noticed when I was in Chicago last, stuff was much tighter. The parking lot lanes were narrower, the spots not as deep.

Rosenthal speculates on deadline deal candidates
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 26, 2014 -> 09:34 PM) I think you mean 60 (July 31st), unless you're talking about the August 31st deadline for adding for going through waivers and being added to another team's playoff roster. If they really wanted to trade him and there's legitimate interest in June/July, they don't have to wait. But, as mentioned, the idea of protection/balance for Abreu. That said, there's certainly no guarantee he will have it next year...or that having him forced to become even more selective without a big LH bat behind him wouldn't actually help his development more than being pitched around or super selectively by contending playoff teams wary of his one big at-bat beating them. I jumped to an assumption that they were talking about a waiver deal. Figuring Dunn and Danks would probably clear waivers. But I agree with you, even a deal in June or July would be fine.

Rosenthal speculates on deadline deal candidates
QUOTE (Whitey @ Apr 26, 2014 -> 06:26 PM) Come on man... I'm not saying I want Dunn here for the next 5 years. I would like for him to be gone after this year just as much as the next guy. But how does taking the one left handed power bat we have out of the lineup (in exchange for a Leury Garcia level prospect, which is all we would get) help Abreu and Viceido's development? There will be 25 games or so left at the deadline. I'd rather get something than nothing for Dunn. So 137 games or so with Dunn around (not certain how many he will play) then 25 without him. I'm comfortable with that.

AL Rookie of the Month/Year watch
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 26, 2014 -> 06:02 PM) One way to make an exception to that would be an injury. AAA MVP who goes down for Tommy John surgery right at the end of the year, misses a full season, then steps back up. Yes. That could be as simple as someone that didn't play the previous year unless suspended.

Gift Card Exchanges
I've seen a couple ads regarding gift card exchange places. Has anyone used one? Seems like an easy way to save a few bucks if they are legit. I was looking at one site that offered REI gift cards at a 13% discount. Combined with other sales, it could be a nice discount on some of my upcoming purchases.

AL Rookie of the Month/Year watch
QUOTE (Cubano @ Apr 26, 2014 -> 08:07 AM) Isn't the Serie Nacional labeled as an A ball by many in the US Media, Sabermetrics community, etc? We see examples after examples of AAA and AA players from US going to Japan and putting better numbers there. We also see many Japanese stars struggling in MLB and even AAA. Therefore, the Japanese league as a whole is not as a strong as a AAA in the US. Why a NPB or a Serie Nacional player is any different than a AAA or AA player for the ROY consideration? Isn't AAA a professional league too with better fields, baseball equipment, transportation, incentives than the Serie Nacional players? Who has the better chance to succeed? I think it's more that the players that come here have seasoned themselves to professional baseball, are older than guys in the states coming up from AAA. If Abreu came here two or three years ago it would have been a better equivalent. Perhaps wording it along the lines of "to be eligible for ROTY honors a player must have played the majority of the last season (or whatever) on a United States minor league team or played (3 years or average minor league time) on a professional team outside the US. I'm guessing here but someone who was a AA or AAA league MVP in 2010 would have been on a MLB roster by 2012.

AL Rookie of the Month/Year watch
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 25, 2014 -> 10:07 AM) If you are playing in a self-professed "major league" you shouldn't be eligible for the "rookie" of the year. If you want to change it to "first year" player of the year, that is fine. As it is, I hate that we give a 32 year old veteran star from Japan/Cuba/Wherever, the same consideration as a playing getting his first taste of major league baseball I'm on this side. Especially if you have played multiple seasons in the top tier league.

Investing Thread
QUOTE (gatnom @ Apr 17, 2014 -> 05:09 PM) So, do any of you financially savvy people have some investing advice for a guy who is just starting his first real job out of college? Paying back my student loans is my primary priority at the moment, but I'd like to start putting some money aside for retirement etc. sooner rather than later. Any thoughts? Save up a $1000 and put it in savings then avoid thec redit card trap. "Borrow" from yourself and always, always, avoid paying interest.

Chris Sale to start Thu May 22 vs Yankees
I wonder why they don't limit him to 18-20 starts and 100 pitches or less each game until the team is ready to compete? Maybe 100 innings.
