  1. She has a history of making offensive comments through social media and her employer has warned her. She has had a pretty serious position in a major corporation. This isn't some low level cubical worker. Still the tweets that followed her while she was in the air were funny.

    Hot Drinks

As I'm packing to get away for a couple weeks and looking at the weather forecast I realized that with evening temps in the 40s I should be prepared with hot drinks. My two go to drinks are a mulled red wine with cinnamon, orange zest, orange juice, cloves, and perhaps some apple cider or hot chocolate with peppermint schnapps. What else could I make?

gosh Balta no, just backpacks and duffles.
  4. Those that said players take the risk, it's on them . . . Should we say the same thing about mine workers? Agricultural employees? Firefighters? OSHA exists to make workplaces safer, why should we treat athletes differently than other workers?

Eventually I need to get my ass in gear and start packing.
  6. I had been searching for a cooking school that offered the class. There are a couple bed and breakfasts that offer cooking classes as well, but the time or type of class wasn't interesting. She has been talking about tamale making and I asked a chef I know if he knew of someone and he said he would do it. I'm hoping since it is someone we know that will make it better, not lame.
  7. I have the chef of a local restaurant coming over to teach tamale making to my wife and I. It should be fun.

  9. QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 19, 2013 -> 05:04 PM) I guess it's the researcher in me. I cannot support a conclusion unless there is evidence to support it. So saying I don't want my kid to play football based on this evidence to me is wrong, because there is no evidence. Right now I would say it opposes it because no research has found a causal relationship or even a correlation. However, as stated people can make and should make their own decisions about their own children. I guess part of this though is predicting where the research will lead. Take someone making a decision about smoking in the 1950s. There wasn't enough data. I believe we are at the same point with concussions and football. I don't see it leading to a conclusion that getting hit repeatedly in the head is a good thing.

Gee, when I see all the Christmas cards that my students gave me that call me their favorite teacher I think I don't assign enough homework and I am too easy of a grader.
  11. I like how we're making adjustments as this is implimented. I know that some politicians were blasted when they first said that we'll see what pops up and fix it accordingly. But so far there have been prudent adjustments in timeline and rules that seem to be fixing some of the biggest problems. Americans have always been adaptable and innovators.

I should thank Balta for reminding me that that the oil company has a vested interest in having me change my oil. However, I swill note that Ford has a vested interest in saving me cost of ownership so I can pay more for the vehicle.
  13. I wonder if those that are saying they wouldn't say no to football would say no to anything their child wants to do? And what that might be?

I am a little concerned about Ford's maintenance schedule for my truck. The computer monitors the driving conditions and lets me know when to perform an oil change. It could be as many as 10,000 miles, but 7,500 is considered normal.
  15. While I hoped that my kids would like some of the same sports as I did, my daughter is a dancer and my son played tennis as their primary passion. My son did play golf well enough for us to partner to a second place finish in my country club's father-son alternate shot tournament. But by middle school he was birned out by team sports.
  16. QUOTE (dasox24 @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 10:40 PM) Sorry, Tex - I realize that had nothing to do with your original post. But this whole thread seemed to have taken a turn, so I went with it. It's not "my thread" and one of the things that a good thread does is spark conversations. It's interesting listening to people who don't have kids theorize what they will, or will not, do when they have kids.
  17. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 01:06 PM) I wouldnt convince my kid to play football, but if they wanted to, I would let them. No point in living if our lives are just a padded cage. Would you take a look at the equipment and the training of the coaches before making a decision?

Forgot to make an appointment for an oil change, I hope they can get me in before I leave on vacation.
  19. I believe the solutions have to evolve around the helmet. Better helmets have cause the players to stick their heads where they do not belong. The helmets are great at avoiding skull fractures but as noted earlier, the brain itself is getting bounced around. Getting rid of face guards and softening the helmet may be a good start, at least at the younger ages. As far as allowing kids to play, most younger than middle school youth leagues offer only minimum training fpr coaches, no trainers, etc. The more dangerous the sport the more a parent should know who is responsible for their child during that sport. The level of knowledge and responsibility necessary is higher for football than the other common sports. I can see a parent making the decision to not allow their child to play football where collisions are necessary and common, while allowing the child to play baseball, basketball, gymnastics, or a no check hockey league.
  20. It's a great opportunity to raise prices. It will be interesting to see what this does for the profits for insurance companies.
  21. My rates stayed the same from last year, including the employer match. But I have a pretty deluxe plan to begin with.
