  1. It's a chicken and egg argument. I agree that one of the (probably) unintended consequences of a statistical analysis of baseball players is they can be used to "sell and player". At the extreme, in my old guy opinion, is rejecting the idea that the players around you, the locker room, the coaching, are somehow not important. Some people seem to believe that if every player just focused on producing the best stats possible for himself that a team can be successful. That rejects a whole theory of sports and what it teaches us about character, sacrifice, team play, cooperation, etc. teIam?
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 5, 2014 -> 04:18 PM) Quite right slick. Since only a couple people here could even possibly get the reference I had to tip my hat and quote this.
  3. One fundamental of every sports league is an understanding that every team should try to win every game. Once that gets ignored the sport becomes tarnished and nothing more than a scripted reality show.
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 31, 2014 -> 01:47 PM) I don't remember this time at all. Seriously?

The move went great. The only issue was when I paid one of her new neighbors to help carry her stuff up a flight of stairs. My back and legs were worth the $20. I don't know why she was complaining Brian has the most beautiful eyes, trim, and cracked a couple jokes. Maybe he'll take the twenty and buy her a drink and everyone wins.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 31, 2014 -> 01:03 PM) lol. Abreu sez Hola. Dunn's shadow is so large it covers the #1 free agent.
  7. At it's best the 'buster produces some great discusions. Way back the board was dominated by conservatives. Somewhere around 2010 or 2011 we swung from solidly conservative to mostly liberal. I'm not certain if it was by post count or by the number of posters. I suspect it's more a post count thing. (liberal members post more). As we crossed over, there was a time when I really enjoyed reading the debates. When it was one sided, either side, I lost interest. I wish there was a formula to recreate that.
  8. It is a hefty "thanks for playing the game, here's $14,000,000.00 and the home version as a partying gift".
  9. Serious question. Does a troll add anything to a message board? Having a villian works in sports. Whether it's WWF wrestling or hating on the Yankees and Cowboys, having a villian firing up people sells tickets. Does having a troll keep things interesting and cause you to check in and post more . . . or post less?
  10. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 29, 2014 -> 01:30 PM) So, you want to get rid of multi-multi-multi billion dollar industry (and the jobs, tax revenue and local economic impact) just to save like 1% of college players that are being "ripped" off by a system that provides them with exposure/experience that also gets them paid by the professional leagues? That makes no sense. There are all sorts of business ventures that a university could be involved in. Fielding a sports team makes about as much sense to the university's mission as building a factory to make the t-shirts that are sold in the book store. Why are universities running billion dollar sports franchises? How about running enormousuniversity.com and competing with Amazon?
  11. How about universities drop athletics and focus on education? Why should they field teams? It's a silly tradition started a hundred years ago. Have intermural sports and let those serious athletes hook up with pro teams. It may hurt the universities, but it will be much fairer to all the athletes who are being ripped off by this system. They can be pro athletes and not worry about going to classes or getting a degree.
  12. awesome
  13. I can't picture him in with any cap other than an Indian. And, he should be first ballot.

I love the shtick. Just to be clear, you don't mind cars weaving, slowing up and slowing down in front of you, pulling out in front and not giving you enough room in case you have to stop, passing on the right, and the other erratic moves that drunk drivers make?
  15. It's been a long time since I needed to use either one.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jan 25, 2014 -> 02:48 AM) What you say about the keys not being in the truck is not true in Illinois. In fact, you've made many, many statements in this thread that are completely incorrect. Your "knowledge" of the basic facts of BAC, the laws concerning it, its effects on driving, and the research into it are just infuriatingly off. I cannot believe a person can be so ignorant. I honestly believe you're being intentionally obtuse. Obviously he is. He's created a character. I doubt he's even a professional driver. The last thing a professional wants out there while driving a semi is someone even a little impaired driving around them. A professional understands how dangerous his rig is in an accident and how unpredictable car drivers are even sober. Just compare these two theories of driving he has shared with us: 1. Cars passing a semi on the right -- DANGEROUS!!!!! You will be KILLED!!!! 2. Cars with impaired drivers? no big deal. It's their choice Do you think a professional driver would really think both of these thoughts? Unless he's one of those unprofessional, driving down the road drinking a beer, listening to Rush (Limbaugh), and watching porn drivers. Then maybe.

Oh I am certain if it wasn't me talking about my daughter this would have turned funny fast. There are some boundaries we just don't seem to cross. What is really weird to me at times is how many people posting here are my kid's ages. And thank you y'all.

QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Jan 24, 2014 -> 03:45 PM) Even the lady who founded MADD thinks they've gone way too far. They are an evil group, make no mistake about it. I'm wondering why you would lie about being a truck driver.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 24, 2014 -> 12:33 PM) Speaking of celebrity DUI, former Illini and Dallas Cowboy Josh Brent just received 10 years probation & 180 days in jail for killing his teammate in a drunk driving crash. It's interesting you didn't write "accident". A friend of mine is a local director for MADD and they are very explicit to not call it an accident.

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jan 24, 2014 -> 11:21 AM) Is there not a guy who has been friendzoned to help out with this? Not one that lives close enough.

QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Jan 24, 2014 -> 11:29 AM) I know craigslist has a bad rep but seriously, not everyone is going to do inane things. Seriously though, I'm sure she has a guy friend or two that would be willing to help her. I was just throwing out options. Thanks. I'm not anti Craigslist by any stretch but she was very stressed by a couple guys that came to look at subletting her apartment and it turned her off from the process.

QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Jan 24, 2014 -> 10:32 AM) You could craigslist the big items. I personally leave and sell the big items and just take my clothes and electronics. The issue is a single 22 year old female inviting strangers into her apartment to see and buy the item.

The whole impaired driving argument is why I thought the legalization of marijuana wouldn't happen this fast. As we've become stricter and stricter about impaired driving, adding another legal substance to the list of potential causes seemed to run counter to conventional wisdom. And before someone posts that they drive better high than straight then why isn't there a scandal in autoracing calling marijuana a performace enhancing drug?
