I should thank Balta for reminding me that that the oil company has a vested interest in having me change my oil. However, I swill note that Ford has a vested interest in saving me cost of ownership so I can pay more for the vehicle.
  2. I wonder if those that are saying they wouldn't say no to football would say no to anything their child wants to do? And what that might be?

I am a little concerned about Ford's maintenance schedule for my truck. The computer monitors the driving conditions and lets me know when to perform an oil change. It could be as many as 10,000 miles, but 7,500 is considered normal.
  4. While I hoped that my kids would like some of the same sports as I did, my daughter is a dancer and my son played tennis as their primary passion. My son did play golf well enough for us to partner to a second place finish in my country club's father-son alternate shot tournament. But by middle school he was birned out by team sports.
  5. QUOTE (dasox24 @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 10:40 PM) Sorry, Tex - I realize that had nothing to do with your original post. But this whole thread seemed to have taken a turn, so I went with it. It's not "my thread" and one of the things that a good thread does is spark conversations. It's interesting listening to people who don't have kids theorize what they will, or will not, do when they have kids.
  6. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Dec 18, 2013 -> 01:06 PM) I wouldnt convince my kid to play football, but if they wanted to, I would let them. No point in living if our lives are just a padded cage. Would you take a look at the equipment and the training of the coaches before making a decision?

Forgot to make an appointment for an oil change, I hope they can get me in before I leave on vacation.
  8. I believe the solutions have to evolve around the helmet. Better helmets have cause the players to stick their heads where they do not belong. The helmets are great at avoiding skull fractures but as noted earlier, the brain itself is getting bounced around. Getting rid of face guards and softening the helmet may be a good start, at least at the younger ages. As far as allowing kids to play, most younger than middle school youth leagues offer only minimum training fpr coaches, no trainers, etc. The more dangerous the sport the more a parent should know who is responsible for their child during that sport. The level of knowledge and responsibility necessary is higher for football than the other common sports. I can see a parent making the decision to not allow their child to play football where collisions are necessary and common, while allowing the child to play baseball, basketball, gymnastics, or a no check hockey league.
  9. It's a great opportunity to raise prices. It will be interesting to see what this does for the profits for insurance companies.
  10. My rates stayed the same from last year, including the employer match. But I have a pretty deluxe plan to begin with.

Bwahahahah But only in the winter

Zero chance I'll see snow today. How about you?
  13. I am trying to keep my expectations low. The level of disappointment will already be pretty huge if Frank isn't elected this year. He's really the first player in my lifetime I cared at all about making the HoF.
  14. It's one more piece of evidence. Not as valuable as others, meaningless when evaluating some pitchers as people have pointed out. But I wouldn't reject any facts. Especially when the wins do not flow with the rest of the stats.
  15. Brain injuries to players have been in the news more frequently. There have been several high profile suicides in recent years. So what should be done?

might change the first time a boy shows up to take his daughter on a date.
  18. And to prove your case you looked at ERA, WHIP, IP, and GS and used it aganist W-L. I said that was not a good way to look at it. Which is better looking at: ERA or W-L, WHIP, IP, and GS? WHIP or W-L, ERA, IP, and GS? IP or W-L, WHIP, ERA, and GS? GS or W-L, WHIP, ERA, and IP? There isn't any single stat that really stands on it's own. So rejecting W-L because the other four stats are more reliable is cherry picking. If we want to rank the five stats in order I would be hard pressed to place W-L last. Maybe ERA/WHIP then W-L then IP and GS. I wouldn't place IP or GS above W-L.
  19. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 16, 2013 -> 01:36 PM) They would prefer Hernandez because he's a better pitcher. He allows fewer runs, fewer base runners, eats more innings, and gives your team a better chance to win. Insert Chris Sale instead for Felix, the point remains. Just because they did not win does not mean that the pitcher did not do more than others to give his team a chance to win. If the team is bad, then their W-L is going to be severely affected. Do you really think the Sox players saw Chris Sale go out to the mound this year and think "OK, we can tank it today, Sale is on the mound" ? Is he a bad pitcher because he went 11-14? Sure, there may be some intangible benefit to the team having a stud starter on the mound, but I like to think these guys are professionals and they are going to go out and do their best day in and day out, regardless of who is pitching on the mound. See, you grouped several stats, you didn't just look at one. No stat should be isolated. Which was my point.

  21. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Dec 16, 2013 -> 09:11 PM) So I shouldn't own guns because of my opinions. I believe the assertion is your posts make it seem that you have anger issues and are a homophobic, racist person who blindly hates some people based on religion, skin pigmentation, and driving habits. In short, factors that could cause you to suddenly start shooting. There are a number of people here with conservative opinions that it has never been mentioned they shouldn't be permitted to own a gun. The simple fact that you can't even understand what the reasons are against you probably also adds to the reasons why.
  22. Some people care about different things. Some people care (a lot) that when innocent children are murdered with guns that the government will come and take their guns. So they donate to the NRA and argue with people who believe the constitution calls for a well regulated militia. Others say a prayer. Hold their own children a little closer. Write letters to their elected leaders, teach gun safety, whatever. There are a lot of different ways to show you care, and a lot of different things to care about.

Hairy guys in bright red suits are the exact kind of strangers we should tell our kids to avoid. Instead, we encourage the kids to sit on his lap
  24. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Dec 16, 2013 -> 01:51 PM) Relievers are relievers. I liked Addy but I'm sure this organization will churn out another Addison Reed or two this year. x2
  25. I like the ruling. I'm not a fan of any sort of "grab them all and let God sort it out" and "if you have nothing to hide, why are you bothered by it" tactics.
