  1. Thank you, I have used that sort of circle game when I was teaching history. I like that idea. I was just explaining it to my wife who teaches third grade, she's going to use it. And wouldn't it be cool in a few years when they are of legal drinking age for them to grab that ping pong ball and think "Damn, Tex was preparing me for life in college, just like he promised!" I was trying to present it as more of Bozo's Grand Prize Game or a carnival midway game.

    Certainly could be some confusion
  9. I am trying to think of a new game to play with my 8th graders. Currently they have a vovabulary challenge to earn stickers and cover a star. Once it is covered, they will win some free time or perhaps a movie day. For our next six weeks I am thinking instead of earning stickers they will earn chances at a game and the prizes will accumulate for free time, etc. My first idea is ping pong balls that they toss/bounce into cups. Perhaps a largish center target for low points, (maybe a bucket) and three smaller targets (perhaps red solo cups) for more points. I was also thinking of getting a suction cup dart gun and shooting at a target. I need vocabulary games and something to cement my reputation as the "coolest teacher ever".

    And the annual offseason thread that never ends. Alphabetical begins.
  11. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 9, 2013 -> 03:21 PM) F*ckin' Trader Joe's is where it's at, b****es. x2. I love Trader Joes
  12. Someone who is making a case for a four or five year set back kindly expand their point? There are multiple holes in this team. How will losing your Ace while potentially filling two or three holes set you back five years?
  13. QUOTE (southside hitman @ Dec 9, 2013 -> 09:54 AM) Bob Nightengale ‏@BNightengale 1m Jerry Reinsdorf on #Whitesox rumors re Chris Sale: "I've only had 1 player in my 33 years who couldn't be traded. He played basketball. This made me laugh. First off losing Sale would really suck, but not five year suck. The right trade also has the opportunity to move up the team's return. Because there are a couple really nice lists of players that would be nice in return, I won't go there. I would like to mention if a team really does want Sale, Sale needs a teammate to go with him. A big teammate. Perhaps Dunn and all his contract.
  14. I cut my pay in half from VP Sales to college student / teacher. Cutting in half again for a PhD program is really tough. Texas Tech has a Rhet/Comp program that is basically on-line except for two weeks at the end of May where you are on campus. Nice, but I'm not really interested in Rhet/Comp. My main reason for seeking a program is the intellectual challenge, the name recognition of the program is secondary. So I'm considering smaller programs where I could possibly teach AP courses at a high school or Community College and attend classes. Congrats on doing it when you are young.
  15. I've slowed in recent years as well. There were times when my work situations allowed me to post while working. That changed, plus now I rarely have full access in the summer. And I realized I had become a huge ass and really wanted to change that. The only way was to post less.
  16. QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Dec 8, 2013 -> 09:53 AM) It won't matter much if they trot a sucky team out there. The play on the field is what will draw fans, not some s***ty catch phrase or stupid "Make an Impact" - like commercial. True. However, if marketing is your job, you have to market whatever is out there. For the success of the franchise getting to the next level, they have to sell tickets and ratings next season. Win or (more likely) lose.
  17. I think the knowledgeable fan will have a reasonable understanding of a "good" and "great" 2014 season. We're still a season or more likely two seasons away from being competitive to the point where the yardstick will be a playoff spot or even going AL champs. And that may be where the casual fan and the knowledgeable fan diverge. There are already a couple things going great (Sale for example), the object is keep those plates spinning and not crashing down while firing up a few more.
  18. I am at that point where I am looking at some literature programs. I wish I had done this before kids and career. Even the funded positions are really funded enough.
  19. 47,000 for me. Sorry
  20. Reddy and Milkman hitting milestones of post counts caused me to look at the top post counts (when the hell did SS2k5 pass 100,000?). Just a really quick calculation, to make 25,000 posts, at just 60 seconds per post, would require over 400 hours. That's not counting any time to read other people's posts.
  21. If you were Brooks Broyer how would you be supporting ticket sales? What is your marketing plan for 2014? Who are you featuring? New promos? New merchandise? New partnerships? For one, I'd be advertising in all the Cuban newspapers and media
  22. Who is being marketed?
  23. It may be too early for this thread, the roster isn't set, but I am wondering what goals the Sox really have for 2014. Forget the marketing bulls*** that they will toss out that the team could win the world series. What are the realistic goals. I am thinking of a couple obvious Develop Abreu Keep Sale healthy Catcher? What else? I'm thinking actual items that the team currently has control over. We could add something like ditching Dunn or other roster type moves. But I think it would be interesting to stick to things that do not rely on other teams and luck.
  24. Guys get reputations. Stuff gets repeated and repeated until people think it's true. Fans grab "inside information" and keep repeating it. I doubt he's anywhere near as bad as people make him out to be, and I'll bet he has mellowed in the past ten years. I'd like to take the time to check who was defending Martin in the NFL thread. How can people defend Martin then rip on AJP?
  25. QUOTE (Reddy @ Dec 8, 2013 -> 12:13 AM) http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2013/...tics/?hpt=hp_t3 GOP like Duke have been flaming Newt and Ted Cruz for their positive tributes to Mandela. Well Newt has responded to said critics: Well said, Newt. (first time I've ever said that) The past few years Newt has made a number of statements that I've applauded. I think when politicians are freed up from party matters they can be more like the rest of us. Much more down the middle on most issues.
