  1. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Oct 8, 2013 -> 02:08 PM) Not to discount research, but why is that the responsibility of the tuition paying student? If I was paying tuition, I am paying it to be taught, not so he can go publish papers, research things and add a little to his prestige. Wouldn't you rather be a physics student at the University of Chicago and doing research using a particle accelerator or learning about it in a book later? Which employee would you rather hire?
  2. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 8, 2013 -> 10:00 AM) Good thing they dumbed down the touchscreen phone then. Otherwise we would still be using these: Dumb down is a poor choice of words, the marketing people at Apple prefer things like "making it more accessible" or "user friendly" possibly even "intuitive".
  3. I wonder if food producers are thinking, hey we need to be extra careful during the shutdown because the government isn't fully supporting and watching over us -or- what can we slip by while no one is watching?
  4. http://www.khou.com/news/texas-news/Report...-226744931.html Close to death after being forced from the national park by the shutdown. (hyperbole, I can't really blame the shut down)
  5. NSS, it isn't Hollywood, yet our world views are shaped that way. Thank you for two excellent posts.
  6. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Oct 7, 2013 -> 06:00 PM) But is the person who spills hot coffee in their lap worthy of a 7 figure settlement because they are idiots? When McDonalds had already settled many, many lawsuits over their too hot coffee while continuing to serve coffee many degrees hotter than anyone else? Yes. Their rational was their customers did not drink the coffee in the car, but waited until they were at work. Further causing the McD trouble was their employees initially refused the woman napkins while laughing at her. Read up on it. It really is a fascinating case and miles different than was portrayed in pop culture.
  7. On the other side of the coin are the rstrictions that are placed on scholarship athletes which are different than on other scholarship students. For example, a music major who is attending a university on a music scholarship may also earn money playing music. The restrictions on athletes earning money makes them getting part time jobs almost impossible. These restrictions came about because boosters would offer star recruits $$$$ for doing basically nothing, or to make appearances. We didn't like that so various measures were imposed. I agree with everything SS is saying here, there is great value, but there needs to be a way for a kid to have enough pocket money to go out on a date or fly back home in case of a family emergency.
  8. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Oct 6, 2013 -> 11:03 AM) I'm Irish so I stupidly bandwagon Notre Dame. Catholic, and me too. But not on an obsessive level. More like if they are playing any random opponent, I hope they win. But I couldn't even tell you who their coach is or their current record.
  9. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Oct 6, 2013 -> 11:03 AM) No ties at all to Florida State, but I became a fan when Weinke/Warrick were tearing it up and I fell in love. The logo/colors/Osceola were also easy to catch on with me, plus the great players that have come from there. Had I gone to a D1 college, no doubt that would have been my team, but I went DII and FSU stuck for good. \Was that you last night?
  10. QUOTE (zenryan @ Oct 6, 2013 -> 09:25 AM) There is a local sports radio show host who is a Miami Hurricanes football fan and a Duke basketball fan. Now that annoys me. That would bother me too, but is that any different than being say a Sox fan and a Spurs fan?
  11. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 5, 2013 -> 10:03 AM) How is it a failure? By all accounts she was being treated for her various mental health issues. Being treated doesn't mean she is guaranteed to be cured. Some people have issues that go past conventional treatment and drugs. Was it a success of the mental health system? She forced a situation that caused her to be killed while having her baby in the car. Avoiding that would be a success, having it happen would be a failure. Now if you are suggesting the system did all it could reasonably be expected to do, I probably would agree on first glance. But reserve the right to flip flop as new information becomes available.
  12. BTW, those students assisting professors on patent-able research projects, and the professors, also have made billions for universities.
  13. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 4, 2013 -> 09:11 PM) No, because in this industry, the major source of labor isn't paid for it's work because the NCAA (which is by definition a cartel) forbids payment to them. What I'm arguing is that college athletics really isn't any different from any other industry and that the main source of labor, the athletes, should be allowed to be compensated for their work. Compensation perhaps in the form of food and shelter, or a university degree? I'm in favor of some sort of payment, but then also dismantle scholarships and have them pay for their education, room, and board like other students. Imagine that swimmer for (insert major program here) paying the $30,000 a year tuition, then we'll see what he thinks about minimum value of the degree.
  14. A falling tide lowers all boats. At this point every elected leader is falling or will be falling.
  15. Last night I was sitting at my favorite island bar and a few guys were arguing college football. One guy was a huge Florida State fan. Knew just about everything you could possibly know about the program. When I asked him how a Seminole grad wound up in Longhorn or Aggie country he said he didn't actually go there. In fact he never even lived in Florida. It seemed like he just picked a top program to cheer for. Once he settled down he was a decent sort of chap, bought a round of drinks and told a few decent jokes. So how does someone become so enamored over a college or university they never attended? I get physical proximity. I get sending your kid to that college (Go Illini!!). I get having a family member work there (Go UTSA Roadrunner!!) But I don't quite get just picking some university and being a fanboy. Isn't it kind of weird in a way? Willing to understand.
  16. See if there is an umpire training nearby. I needed a crash course in soccer and an official's program was an excellent way to achieve that. In middle school coaching we really try to follow the HS program and their plays, philosophies, etc. A solid HS coach should not mind spending a few minutes with you either in person or sharing some emails.
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 4, 2013 -> 02:04 PM) +1 +2 Tie goes to the cops. We've had some instances here that clearly law enforcement / military went too far and tried to cover it up. This seems to me, from the early reports, more a failure of our mental health systems than our law enforcement system.
  18. Health care is a necessity, as much as eating. Why is the insurance companies' profits added to the health care system? What value do they actually serve to the consumer? Once we can agree on those answers, we begin to create a health care system that everyone can agree on. But, we can never agree on their role. Currently our system relies on people who pay insurance premiums and remain healthy to finance those people paying premiums and needing treatments while ignoring the people who cannot pay and do not have insurance. That inequality was accepted by damn near everyone for a long time. Now, when we say these taxpayers that remain healthy will be financing these other taxpayers who need health care, people rage against the new system. The current system worked great in the 1950s when an office visit was a couple hours wages or you died before running up huge bills. We need a new system that fits 2013. I truly wish the GOP had a proposal that wasn't "this is working just fine, no need to change". People were smart enough to know that meant the system was working just fine for the MOSTLY white, middle and upper class, GOP base. I forgot who said it, we have the party of bad ideas versus the party of no ideas.
  19. https://tcta.org/node/13678 I chose to teach in a district where there is a large migrant population, where there is a high level of poverty, where parents more often than not did not graduate from college. I am interested in how they will find a system that fairly allows my efforts to be compared to say Highland Park, Texas (which is similar to Highland Park, Illinois, if everyone in Highland Park, Illinois suddenly received large pay raises). Not only that, but I teach English Language Arts with a high percentage of English language learners. Perhaps that makes my job easier as gains are easiest to achieve with new motivated learners. Is it fair to use gains when a few times a year I receive students who are reading 7 grade levels below average versus other teachers who may receive mostly students reading above grade level. I am glad I am not trying to devise the system. I fear an unbalanced rating system will cause good teachers to flee these schools and head to where the going is easier. Which is about the opposite of what is necessary to keep the US competitive in a world economy that values intellectual skills over manual labor skills. Also we are taking away human judgement. Gone are the days where a supervisor evaluated the employees. We are trying to achieve an unbiased, numerical formula where one really doesn't exist.
  20. 1:1 ratio Shlitz and sliders . . .
  21. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 3, 2013 -> 01:13 PM) In related news: Nice move.
  22. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Oct 3, 2013 -> 12:54 PM) Unless you're a business donating to the DNC or Obama campaign... I am not following what you mean.
  23. QUOTE (Tex @ Oct 2, 2013 -> 01:07 PM) He deserved it, so I guess he deserves it now. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 3, 2013 -> 09:11 AM) Exactly. It would be the same as saying that Hank Aaron shouldn't be in the HOF because he hit .229 his last year in baseball. Tell me you had to look that up.
  24. QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 3, 2013 -> 10:17 AM) Was that a compromise? I recall 2013/2014 being implementation dates during passage and dems were worried they'd be punished before it was helping people. Maybe it was to help out the stupid 10 year scoring window so we could have that nice round number. Balta, do you remember? Right Dems wanted an earlier start date, the GOP was, and still is, for delays.
