    Smelt Fishing

QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Feb 26, 2013 -> 11:06 PM) This is solid information. I went out smelt fishing with friends in high school and college a few of times out on the seawall at Burnham Harbor and had a great time. I didn't have any gear but my friends did, and as long as we had beer to share there were other fishermen out there that were happy to share fresh smelt they were grilling or frying. Don't know if it's the same sort of vibe it was back then but it is something I fondly remember. X2 I found it a lot like ice fishing, very social.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 24, 2013 -> 05:51 PM) Plus the Sox lost a lot of a generation when the Cubs were on free TV (and national TV) and the Sox weren't. Another great point. I haven't looked, and this is only through my biased eyes, but it does seem like the Sox won the battle of the internet. Maybe that will turn everything around.
  4. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Feb 24, 2013 -> 02:35 PM) Location and ballpark, that's it. It's really easy. It's not about welcoming casual fans by either organization. So there are more avid baseball fans around Wrigley? I think you are actually agreeing with me. The casual fan is drawn to factors other than the team. Location and ballpark. The ballpark is more than sight-lines and parking. It's the entire experience. I think welcoming people to the ball park is very important. If people do not feel welcome are they really going to go?
  5. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Feb 26, 2013 -> 09:12 AM) Actually he quoted me $300 plus parts, I paid him $400 plus parts for a job well done. What card does that get me? Hmm, a good guy?

  7. QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Feb 21, 2013 -> 01:32 PM) It is perfectly normal to attend women's college volleyball games alone. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 21, 2013 -> 01:37 PM) Literally alone. Best laugh here in weeks
  8. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Feb 11, 2013 -> 04:08 PM) More people have died in the name of God than for any other reason. Brutal wars are STILL being waged after 2000 years in areas of this world for one reason and one reason alone: religion. Really? WW1? WW2? Was it in the name of religion that atomic bombs were dropped? I believe more people have died from greed than religion. Whether a desire for land (Mexican-American War), profits from slavery (Civil War), Oil (take your pick of the past 50 years. Yes, there have been religious wars, but if you study all of the circumstances, greed is usually at the root. They may wrap it in a religious tapestry, but remove it and you see greed.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 24, 2013 -> 10:58 AM) Jon Morosi ‏@jonmorosi Marlins spring home opener gate down 50 percent from comparable game last year. I hope it gets worse for them from that point.
  10. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Feb 25, 2013 -> 11:43 AM) I didn't pay union wages. Cash, baby. Exploiting the worker class, pick up your gold gop membership card.
  11. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 25, 2013 -> 11:28 AM) How on Earth did you not call it a "Boom Boom" party? He was very gracious and came over to say hello. We did not ask him about the "call to the bullpen". He did say that the WS were the most professional organization he had been associated with.
  12. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Feb 21, 2013 -> 01:48 PM) We just did a smaller redo on our kitchen. Kept the cabinets, got new laminate counters, sink and appliances. I have relatives in the trades who know people, so I had a guy who was a semi-retired union carpenter come in and remove the old stuff, install new counters, sink, faucet and all the plumbing underneath for $400. Then wife and I painted and got 2 new lights as well. Home Depot wanted $1100 for the same install. Also did a full restore in my previous house, new cabinets, flooring, the works. What a pain in the butt, especially since my house was older. Good luck with your project. Turn in your GOP fan card.
  13. The crowd wasn't any different. The only ex MLB person that I can remember drawing a crowd was Terry Bevington, but it was because I threw a Bevington party.
  14. From the US Census Bureau. Took me an hour to complete the damn thing. Anyone else get one of these?

    Spring Break Plans

We're heading to Big Bend National Park for a week of camping, hiking, and reading.
  16. http://www.valleymorningstar.com/sports/ar...19bb30f31a.html LMAO. When he wasn’t up to bat, Canseco looked a nervous mess, complete with constant sniffling, a facial tic and an obsession with the cherry Chapstick he kept in his pocket. This time, Canseco refused the aid of a pinch-runner. The league made a special rule for its ringer this weekend. Mainly, he doesn’t have to run if he doesn’t want to. (Casey Martin of baseball?) Yeah, at times it really sucks living here.
  17. While it is easy to dismiss the difference in attendance to "Cub fans are stupid", there is more at play here. Why do casual fans, fans without a real vested interest in either team, prefer to watch a game on the north side instead of the south side? It takes a really good Sox team to draw them in. One factor I believe causes this is the Cubs do a better job of welcoming the casual fans. When they here that Sox fans are more knowledgeable about baseball, they know where they fit. When they hear Sox fans complain about "band wagon jumpers", they know where they fit. And, while we know it isn't true, there is the whole safety of the north side versus lawlessness on the south side. The attendance battle isn't grabbing the regular fan, the attendance battle is for the family that goes to one or two games a year. They have no idea whose in first. They may know a player or two, but they just want to have a fun family outing. Clearly, they, and salespeople entertaining clients, prefer Wrigley.
  18. Part of changing our views on victims. Thankfully society now sees victims as victims and not someone that should be shielded in any way. It's hard to believe that not too long ago parents wouldn't want their children exposed as being victims, they didn't want their kids dragged through court and forced to testify. Sexual abuse, rape, etc continues to be an under reported crime category. I think the changes are for the better. But the changes have not happened everywhere. In some corners of the world women are still ostracized if they are raped.
  19. Team culture. It's the little things that build great franchises.
  20. I use to travel a lot for business and went to games on a fairly regular basis. It was weird at first but I wound up having some cool times. Every so often I would meet someone else solo. For me it was better than sitting in the hotel bar.
  21. Thanks a Lot are my current downfall . . .
  22. I log in to soxtalk while eating half a pack of girl scout cookies and this is the first thread I see.
  23. So if you are sitting at a light waiting for it to change so you can turn right you should continuously be checking the bike lane? The cyclist passed a car with their blinker on getting ready to turn right. It seems crazy that a bike can pass a car like that and claim the right of way.
  24. Even the bike forums I read said cars should enter the bike lane near the interesection.
