  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 27, 2012 -> 01:07 PM) So is there any reasonable situation where a person survives this attack but then departs congress which you'd count as being forced out? It seems like if the person doesn't die, then there's nothing that can happen you'd regard as being forced out. Perhaps not. Thank you for pointing that out.
  2. I believe there is a differnce between being voted out of office and being forced out.
  3. I always assumed after wrapping up a war the military would become smaller. We ramp up during a war. From what I have heard of the new plans, they seem solid.
  4. Wow. I would have thought they had an endowment that would have carried them forever. Was there ever any scandal? It always seemed like a really solid charity.
  5. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 27, 2012 -> 12:44 PM) She was forced to retire because someone shot her in her brain, severely impacting her ability to perform her job. She made a voluntary decision to resign while recovering from her injuries. No one forced her to resign. If I knew y'all would define forced in that manner I would have rephrased my original statement. If we demand, forcibly remove, cause to be removed, or in some manner beyond their own voluntary decision, have someone resign because they are taking too long to heal from a terrorist attack, we are allowing the terrorist what they wanted, the person removed from office. That to me feels like they won. The terrorists got what they wanted, the voters did not.
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 22, 2012 -> 05:26 PM) If this isn't her being "Forced from office as a direct result of a terrorist act", I don't know what is. Let's look at the word forced and see if it applies forced Obtained or imposed by coercion or physical power: "the brutal regime of forced labor".I do not believe she was forced, at least by my understanding of the word forced. I believe she voluntarily resigned. vol·un·tar·y Adjective:Done, given, or acting of one's own free will: "voluntary contributions I believe there is a huge difference here. How long of a recovery time should we allow? Six months? A year? and who should decide? So again, what I believe is if we started forcing people from office if it will take too long for them to heal, then the terrorists win. I would hope this never happens again, but if it does, I would rather the office holder is allowed to voluntarily make that decision, and not to be forced to resign. As I said initially, I would respect a person's decision to stay in office while recovering from their illness or injuries.
  7. After my divorce I was opening a checking account and was refused because of a bounced check my ex wrote. Once I covered that with the store, life was good and it never appeared anywhere on my credit report. I'm not certain if fees would be the same, but the amount was more that double what you're talking about.
  8. Isn't there a little Ned Beatty in all of us?
  9. Come on, the man just died let the body cool before making accusations like that ;-)
  10. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 26, 2012 -> 03:10 PM) What? Give me a break. You're comparing a high-profile case about potential child rape to a local story about a dog being shot by a drunken hillrod and expecting the same amount of evidence gathering. What kind of evidence gathering would you suggest we collect before it is safe in your opinion to commentate (which by the way, I find f***ing ironic as hell since that sure as hell doesn't hold you back from commenting or speculating on any other matter)? I don't believe he brought up the PSU case to compare. That was done for him.
  11. QUOTE (scenario @ Jan 26, 2012 -> 02:58 PM) Not sure I understand what story a guy could tell that would justify shooting somebody's pet Labrador. Makes absolutely no sense to me. The dog had attacked his child before. Fought with his dog. Chased his cat. Caused his horse to bolt. Appeared rabid. I am not saying it happened in this case, but we have one side of the story. I promised after the Duke Lacross case I would not rush to judgement again. Based on what we know the guy is a sadistic scumbag. But we only know one side of the story.
  12. My girlfriend and I both switched to USAA for out banking. We switched and then left on vacation at Christmas. She miscalculated how much she had desposited in the old versus new accounts. She checked her USAA balance when we finally were within a cell signal and found out she was overdrawn. She called USAA in a panic. They calmed her down, explained they transfered funds from her savings to checking (she had pre-authorized that) and everything was fine. She asked what the fees would be for those transactions. The reply? "Zero, welcome to USAA!".
  13. Based on the one side of the story the guy is a dick. There are several possible stories that this guy could tell that, if true, would completly turn things around.
  14. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jan 25, 2012 -> 01:06 PM) I don't think that is a good thing for Ventura to be doing, if in fact it is what is between the lines. As the new manager his word must be accepted by the players and be good for something. You don't say one thing to the public and then do something else. Now if Matt fails and Reed can step in that's great, but my guess is the job is Matt's at this point. Players know the score.
  15. While I enjoyed the article and generally agreed with his opinion, I must say I hated that he wrote it. As far as I am concerned, any mention of Oz in a Chicago newspaper or referenceing the Sox is a bad article and further plays into their over inflated opinions of themselves (Guillens). It is a good day when there are no Oz/Sox columns, it is a bad day when there is. And I believe Oz will be one hell of a manager for the next couple seasons.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 24, 2012 -> 10:36 AM) Get off your butt and make her a big pot of homemade vegetable beef soup! The problem is getting anything from Texas back up to the north suburbs

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 23, 2012 -> 07:01 PM) Make and freeze works well. I remember a coupe at home businesses that offered that service. basically the idea is, if I was still living in the area I would be bringing her a couple dinners. I would also be freezing my ass off, but that is another story. I am trying to find something closer to home made.

My mom is recovering from surgery and I wanted to send her a couple dinners, but not really interested in pizza delivery. There was a couple home meal catering services I remember, but they both went out of business. Any ideas? Basically I would like a few dinners she can put in the refrigerator.
  19. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 22, 2012 -> 05:10 PM) Then don't call this "Terrorists winning". That's just insulting to her. You are taking it totally out of context. That is a cheap shot that I don't appreciate. When people are FORCED FROM OFFICE, which she isn't, the guy who wanted her out of office and shot her, wins.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 22, 2012 -> 05:08 PM) It's the exact same argument. Who gets to choose what an appropriate profit margin is on a drug? We could save hundreds of thousands of lives worldwide right now if we broke every copyright on every medication. But we don't do that. You still haven't explained why a business should be expected to give away their product. When investors invest in a movie or album, who pays when someone steals a copy? Who pays? Since you can't seem to figure it out, it is on the people who actually buy the product. As that pool gets smaller and smaller they pay more. You can justify stealing all you want. You can complain about profits. You can bring up cancer drugs and God knows everything else. But the conversation is about music and movie downloads. Since the evil investors want to make money you believe people should be allowed to steal from them. I disagree and believe companies should be protected by law when someone steals their stuff. I think Nike should be protected from Chinese counterfeit of their products, I think Clancy deserves the right to sell his books, not have them pirated on-line, and I believe record companies deserve to have people buy their product not steal it.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jan 22, 2012 -> 05:06 PM) That was a stupid argument and I've been agreeing with you. Then I will ask you, or anyone, who pays? How do investors, whether it is the artists or those that pay them, make an investment, how are they suppose to earn back their investment?
  22. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 22, 2012 -> 04:46 PM) No one is forcing her to do this. Assuming she is of sound mind currently, she's deciding that she is incapable of adequately representing her district. There is zero shame in that. Agreed. Read what I responded to. I applaud her for resigning, but I would have respected her desire to hang onto her office while recovering.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 22, 2012 -> 05:03 PM) If people steal a cancer drug that is on copyright, but it keeps them alive, is that a bad thing? Wow, I didn't know the latest Foo Fighter CD was that important to you.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 22, 2012 -> 04:55 PM) Do you have a problem when millions of people begin using generic drugs after a copyright period expires? It would make drugs even more profitable if we expanded copyright protection even more on medication. Why do we limit the return on investmetn that they can make? I have a problem with people stealing. Do you have a problem with businesses expecting to get paid for items they have for sale?
  25. Texsox replied to Quin's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 22, 2012 -> 04:55 PM) No one here is saying that they can't be compensated for their investment in some fashion. The question is about the level. You're the one who is telling us that we need additional protection beyond what is currently available. That is the whole point of this law...that these industries need expanded protection, again. In 1790, copyright protection lasted 28 years. It currently lasts 95 years. Now we need to expand the government's efforts even more for what reason? So if a company wants too much profit it is ok to steal from them? When people steal they are allowing the company zero profit, I can't believe you think that is fair. How will investors earn back their investment if people are allowed to pirate movies and music? Technology makes for a better thief and the laws need to keep pace. The second paragraph is an attempt to put words in my mouth to divert the conversation away from a point you have lost.
