  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 5, 2010 -> 08:06 AM) People also need to remember that the British had a pretty solid level of support in the colonies. It wasn't overwhelming or anything, but enough people feared their reprisals at the very least, that they didn't support revolution. It was a Civil War in a couple different ways. Both versus the British and domestically. At any time allegiances fell with who was winning at the moment.
  2. Flowers instead of AJ next season is a major enhancement for those people who care more about the Sox making money than winning games.
  3. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Nov 4, 2010 -> 05:09 PM) I know Cooper is a NY native, but why on Earth would the Sox ever consider this? Because if you develop a reputation as an organization that blocks their employees, it sends a bad message. Of course it could also be said that by saying sure talk to him, they may be sending a terrible message to Coop. Each situation is different. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 5, 2010 -> 08:49 AM) Who in the hell buys tickets because of the manager? Ozzier attracts attention to the team. People start talking about the team instead of something else, all that buzz sells tickets.
  4. QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Nov 3, 2010 -> 10:08 PM) Emotion has nothing to do with baseball. QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Nov 4, 2010 -> 12:51 PM) Emotion has absolutely zero to do with effective on field performance in baseball. In fact, it's a detriment to hitting, pitching and fielding. QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Nov 4, 2010 -> 02:46 PM) What I said was emotion doesn't help you (effective performance). It hurts your performance. (dertrimental). If it hurts you, than emotion has something to do with performance. Something is not "absolutely zero", hence the contradiction. You said emotion has nothing to do with baseball, it seems you meant emotion has something to do with hurting performance, but it doesn't help performance. But even detrimental is an affect. Are you suggesting that it doesn't matter if a player heads to the plate feeling confident or feeling defeated? That watching three teammates in a row crush pitches doesn't send him to the plate with a better chance of getting a hit? Everything humans do are affected by their emotions, controlling those emotions, good and bad, is a big part of managing a team and performing.
  5. Right now I'm nit seeing who or how the Sox would upgrade.
  6. Terrific, I'm late to the pucker up party
  7. The framers of the Constitution created a method to change it and did as it was being ratified. What more has to be said about their thoughts on it being a permanent document?
  8. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Nov 4, 2010 -> 08:59 AM) I agree they shouldn't be deified, but their opinions, arguments and debates are absolutely relevant in today's world. They're all ideas we still struggle with today. And IMO it's kind of an insult to say they were the Obama/Bush's of today. I think they (maybe not all, but most) were much, much, much more than that. I mean, think about it. What prominent lawyer/politician in today's time would volunteer to represent terrorists in court (Adams). What politician/military leader would be given the keys to the entire country, with endless power and authority, and simply give it up (Washington). Etc. etc. These dudes were much more than your average joe politicians. They were complex people. What leader of today could spend twenty years in France, drinking and partying while his wife and kids are back in the US? I'll only mention slavery. Could the American public have accepted a closed Constitutional Convention?
  9. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 3, 2010 -> 06:01 PM) I hid the body in........ nicely played sir
  10. Kansas recorded a couple damn fine albums
  11. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 3, 2010 -> 01:01 PM) buh? How many people can match her job for job? 50? 100? 500? 1,000? Small numbers compared to our total population. I'll agree she is an example of making mistakes at the top, but she sold people within those organizations and their boards on some of this stuff. For that she is an excellent salesperson. I also base that on my belief that she thought she was doing the right thing.
  12. Nice discussion. A couple thoughts I'd like to add Whether we call them political parties or not, clearly the framers understood that like minded leaders would get together and advance their views. That is the only way a bill would pass with a majority. Perhaps they felt those bonds would be less restrictive and more active. Forming and dissolving over each issue instead of forming over each election. I believe political parties are a natural occurance, people form alliances all the time and in every setting, of course they will here also. The question would be how to eliminate the label and the organization of it. Somehow allow those alliances to form without the group pressure. I'm not certain the American public could handle it. What we have today is less independence from every representative regardless of the initial before their name.
  13. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 3, 2010 -> 12:52 PM) The fatal flaw in your argument is that many of the founders were opposed to political parties and the sort of divisiveness we see now. Their intention wasn't to make government ineffective at getting any serious work done. I'm not certain where you get that idea from. Certainly George Washington was against them, but Jefferson, Hamilton, and a host of others were not against them. I've never seen much where the topic was even that well discussed. If you have a source, I'd be very interested in learning more. I am about to teach that in a few weeks.
  14. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 3, 2010 -> 12:56 PM) When I was getting my MBA, she was one of the prime examples used of how not to run a large corporation. Seriously, she was considered a prime example. She was perhaps the greatest salesperson CEO in the past twenty or so years. She was able to sell some very savvy individuals on some pretty "interesting" ideas. I believe Jas' comment is more along the lines of being the worst player in the Hall of Fame. Hells bells, she got there, that is pretty damn sweet, and did it with multiple companies.
  15. If it was the electric chair . . . Hey SS2k5, hold my hand
  16. Seemed like a good thread titile
  17. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 3, 2010 -> 07:22 AM) A $28 million deficit? That might be the smallest deficit in the country. sorry, that should be billion
  18. Let's look at how our government is designed. First off the framers split the power between the states and the federal governments. Then they divided the federal power between three branches. Then divided the legislative branch in half. Then tossed in checks and balances, further diluting the power. Then we send someone or some group to Washington and complain when they single handidly can't get anything major done. Well guess what, that is by design and something we all should be grateful for, no matter which side of the aisle you agree with.
  19. Not exactly a perfect situation. Until proven otherwise with another catcher signed, I'd assume that AJP will see less games and Castro will see more. I always think of the small changes before the big changes.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Nov 2, 2010 -> 10:24 PM) Black people usually have to go to black barbers to get specific styles or because of the different texture of it... my hair is fine like a non-black person's butt, I still have to go to a black barber to get it cut a certain way. wtf?
  21. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Nov 3, 2010 -> 06:32 AM) I heard that the way it was written, Prop 19 had a clause inserted that would prevent companies from firing employees for smoking pot unless they could prove that it was imparing their performance. Problem is that it sort of creates a 'protected class' as it also prevents them from basing hiring decisions on pot smoking as well. So if you didn't get a job, you could sue and say it was because you smoke pot, and the company would have to prove that wasn't the reason. I sense a legal nightmare if it passed as it. Can they fire someone for drinking alcohol if it doesn't impair their job performance? Seems like the protections should be the same.
  22. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Nov 2, 2010 -> 09:43 PM) I honestly don't care about what happens in this election save one thing. I think Sharron Angle is an idiot, but I hate Harry Reid worse then Rick Perry (see other thread, ) and I want to see him lose worse then any other politician in my lifetime so far, I think. The Tea Party will be by with a gold star for you. Is he really the worse politician of your lifetime? Probably not, but all the Tea Party driven marketing works. It took a person who you would probably dislike into someone you loathed.
  23. If Perry can somehow avoid a total budget meltdown in 2011, I"ve seen projections as high as a $28 million deficit, he'll be in a good position for a national run. Texas will have to tap our rainy day fund, but will probably chug past the problem. Maybe not as Prez, maybe VP, but I'm convinced he'll run, and run well on a national stage. And he'll carry Texas, unlike Gore who failed to carry his home state when he ran. On the bright side Kap, we've sent our rejects to Washington before and it wasn't all bad.
