America Votes 2010
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 3, 2010 -> 01:01 PM) buh? How many people can match her job for job? 50? 100? 500? 1,000? Small numbers compared to our total population. I'll agree she is an example of making mistakes at the top, but she sold people within those organizations and their boards on some of this stuff. For that she is an excellent salesperson. I also base that on my belief that she thought she was doing the right thing.

Nice discussion. A couple thoughts I'd like to add Whether we call them political parties or not, clearly the framers understood that like minded leaders would get together and advance their views. That is the only way a bill would pass with a majority. Perhaps they felt those bonds would be less restrictive and more active. Forming and dissolving over each issue instead of forming over each election. I believe political parties are a natural occurance, people form alliances all the time and in every setting, of course they will here also. The question would be how to eliminate the label and the organization of it. Somehow allow those alliances to form without the group pressure. I'm not certain the American public could handle it. What we have today is less independence from every representative regardless of the initial before their name.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 3, 2010 -> 12:52 PM) The fatal flaw in your argument is that many of the founders were opposed to political parties and the sort of divisiveness we see now. Their intention wasn't to make government ineffective at getting any serious work done. I'm not certain where you get that idea from. Certainly George Washington was against them, but Jefferson, Hamilton, and a host of others were not against them. I've never seen much where the topic was even that well discussed. If you have a source, I'd be very interested in learning more. I am about to teach that in a few weeks.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 3, 2010 -> 12:56 PM) When I was getting my MBA, she was one of the prime examples used of how not to run a large corporation. Seriously, she was considered a prime example. She was perhaps the greatest salesperson CEO in the past twenty or so years. She was able to sell some very savvy individuals on some pretty "interesting" ideas. I believe Jas' comment is more along the lines of being the worst player in the Hall of Fame. Hells bells, she got there, that is pretty damn sweet, and did it with multiple companies.

Let's look at how our government is designed. First off the framers split the power between the states and the federal governments. Then they divided the federal power between three branches. Then divided the legislative branch in half. Then tossed in checks and balances, further diluting the power. Then we send someone or some group to Washington and complain when they single handidly can't get anything major done. Well guess what, that is by design and something we all should be grateful for, no matter which side of the aisle you agree with.

Thornton, Castro back; Torres gone
Not exactly a perfect situation. Until proven otherwise with another catcher signed, I'd assume that AJP will see less games and Castro will see more. I always think of the small changes before the big changes.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Nov 3, 2010 -> 06:32 AM) I heard that the way it was written, Prop 19 had a clause inserted that would prevent companies from firing employees for smoking pot unless they could prove that it was imparing their performance. Problem is that it sort of creates a 'protected class' as it also prevents them from basing hiring decisions on pot smoking as well. So if you didn't get a job, you could sue and say it was because you smoke pot, and the company would have to prove that wasn't the reason. I sense a legal nightmare if it passed as it. Can they fire someone for drinking alcohol if it doesn't impair their job performance? Seems like the protections should be the same.

America Votes 2010
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Nov 2, 2010 -> 09:43 PM) I honestly don't care about what happens in this election save one thing. I think Sharron Angle is an idiot, but I hate Harry Reid worse then Rick Perry (see other thread, ) and I want to see him lose worse then any other politician in my lifetime so far, I think. The Tea Party will be by with a gold star for you. Is he really the worse politician of your lifetime? Probably not, but all the Tea Party driven marketing works. It took a person who you would probably dislike into someone you loathed.

Republican 2012 Nomination Thread
If Perry can somehow avoid a total budget meltdown in 2011, I"ve seen projections as high as a $28 million deficit, he'll be in a good position for a national run. Texas will have to tap our rainy day fund, but will probably chug past the problem. Maybe not as Prez, maybe VP, but I'm convinced he'll run, and run well on a national stage. And he'll carry Texas, unlike Gore who failed to carry his home state when he ran. On the bright side Kap, we've sent our rejects to Washington before and it wasn't all bad.

The Republican Thread
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 27, 2010 -> 07:15 AM) Like I said in an earlier thread, this needs to be addressed. Plus, even if it shows you the right ones, you don't know what the software is then doing before putting the data onto that cartridge. There needs to be two paper receipts printed from those machines, one for the voter, the other for audit purposes later, and there then needs to be auditing done randomly across machine types and geography, to check electronic accounts versus paper. I am against any paper receipt that leaves with the voter. That would be the end to a private ballot.

Campaign Finance
Do the companies and organizations donate to candidates that already think like them, or do they bypass those cadidiates with common interest and donate to those candidates that oppose them and hope it changes their votes?

November LIST ideas?
QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Nov 2, 2010 -> 11:58 AM) Since they shut down Carbondale for Halloween my roommates and I sat around drinking and making a list of the 20 greatest moments in American history. It was fun then, and it'd be fun on ST. wait wait wait, as in the town still allows Haloween to take over the town by closing streets and allowing a giant street party or they stopped the over the top, college kids from three states crashing everywhere, shutting down??

Tip off #1, if he was straight he would be a barber. Tip off #2 he would not have nearly as good advice on vacation spots, restaurants, and clothes. Broke down and visited a local shop, took my chances, and I would rate the cut as a B-
