Well Water
Depends on where you drill the well. It probably is better for you, health wise. Being a hiker and backpacker, I have a high tolerance for taste in water. I would suggest revisiting the house and tasting the water. For a comparison, find out what chemicals your city water is treated with and what chemicals are added.

Technically legal ponzi schemes
QUOTE (Middle Buffalo @ Mar 25, 2009 -> 01:47 PM) but with MLM products, you see people (friends/family) glaze over pretty quickly when you start pitching the idea to them. I have a past coworker who I would call a friend who is a serial participant in MLM. Lately it's been three (four?) in the travel industry. My last conversation with him . . . Me: I am enjoying life right now, relaxing on the island, taking some classes, reading. A part time job just does not fit. Him: But this is (yet another) ground floor opportunity. This will allow you the financial freedom to do what you want! Me: Really? That does sound good. Him: You bet, imagine what you could do with the free time . . . Me: Yeah, I could relax on the island, take some classes, read some books I've been meaning to get to . . . Him: EXACTLY!

QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Mar 25, 2009 -> 01:46 PM) No on pineapple. It's a bromeliad that is commercially propagated through cut cultivars and most commercial cultivars lack seeds which negatively effect fruit quality. Now, corn, on the other hand, should be accepted. And yes, corn is technically a fruit and not a vegetable since it's basically the seeds and over-ripened ovaries of the plant that we are consuming. But the seeds are not on the outside

The Economy, stupid
Finally.........an explanation we should all be able to understand. Heidi is the proprietor of a bar in Detroit. In order to increase sales, she decides to allow her loyal customers - most of whom are unemployed alcoholics - to drink now but pay later. She keeps track of the drinks consumed on a ledger (thereby granting the customers loans). Word gets around about Heidi's drink now pay later marketing strategy and as a result, increasing numbers of customers flood into Heidi's bar and soon she has the largest sale volume for any bar in Detroit. By providing her customers' freedom from immediate payment demands, Heidi gets no resistence when she substantially increases her prices for wine and beer, the most consumed beverages. Her sales volume increases massively. A young and dynamic vice-president at the local bank recognizes these customer debts as valuable future assets and increases Heidi's borrowing limit. He sees no reason for undue concern since he has the debts of the alcoholics as collateral. At the bank's corporate headquarters, expert traders transform these customer loans into DRINKBONDS, ALKIBONDS and PUKEBONDS. These securities are then traded on security markets worldwide. Niave investors don't really understand the securities being sold to them as AAA secured bonds are really the debts of unemployed alcoholics. Nevertheless, their prices continuously climb, and the securities become the top-selling items for some of the nation's leading brokerage houses. One day, although the bond prices are still climbing, a risk manager at the bank (subsequently fired due his negativity), decides that the time has come to demand payment on the debts incurred by the drinkers at Heidi's bar. Heidi demands payment from her alcoholic patrons, but being unemployed they they cannot pay back their drinking debts. Therefore, Heidi cannot fulfill her loan obligations and claims bankruptcy. DRINKBOND and ALKIBOND drop in price by 90%. PUKEBOND performs better, stabilizing in price after dropping by 80%. The decreased bond asset value destroys the banks liquidity and prevents it from issuing new loans. The suppliers of Heidi's bar, having granted her generous payment extentions and having invested in the securities are faced with writing off her debt and losing over 80% on her bonds. Her wine supplier claims bankruptcy, her beer supplier is taken over by a competitor, who immediately closes the local plant and lays off 50 workers. The bank and brokerage houses are saved by the Government following dramatic round-the-clock negotiations by leaders from both political parties. The funds required for this bailout are obtained by a tax levied on employed middle-class non-drinkers.

greedy two faced mother f***er. If he really wants to stay in Chicago, sign the deal. Be a man, don't hide behind your agent. Like he's ever going to spend $15 mil. That's probably more than his parents made their whole lives. Too soon?

Mississippi Bans Red-Light Cameras
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 25, 2009 -> 07:47 AM) I'll be the contrarian here, sort of. I think these cameras are a generally good idea, but, poorly executed. The process to fight a ticket is a huge pain (DC in particular), which is just wrong to me - you make it easier to write tickets, you'd better make it just as easy to contest them. And any sort of manipulation to get more revenue - changing light timing, nicking people who you shouldn't, etc. - is beyond bad, and might be illegal anyway. ^^ I'd rather fix the system. I do have some privacy concerns, and the tickets should not count against any points on your license, be used to increase insurance rates, etc.

Technically legal ponzi schemes
Some sales guy on new car lot in Boise sells a Ford. His boss, the sales manager makes a little. The GM of the dealership makes a little. The owner makes a little. The regional manager for Ford makes a little. The area director for Ford makes a little, in fact, that sales person's sale supports everyone up to the CEO of Ford. Multilevel marketing.

I'm ordering a pizza
QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Mar 24, 2009 -> 11:29 AM) Nice to meet you. There's no more oil in the anchovies than there is in sausage and pepperoni, however you made that pie you did something wrong. It does give the pizza a rather strong taste, but it's a nice salty-fishy-oily flavor. I don't prefer anchovies on real Chicago pizza, but on the NY style pizza I'm stuck with down here anchovy and mushroom is a great pie. My guess is they did not rinse, drain, and thoroughly dry the anchovies before adding them to the pie. Anchovies are the only pizza where I will opt for a different cheese. I prefer something with a slightly smoky flavor. I also prefer a little bacon tossed on top as well with the little fishes.

The Economy, stupid
Just wondering again, How would the economy look if all those "bad" mortgages had not been made? I assume the home building industry would be down, as would the various spin offs in furniture, etc etc and just to toss a log on the fire If the economy is in trouble because of bad decisions made by lenders, were did government regulations help/hurt the situation.

Trying to download a bit torrent
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 24, 2009 -> 09:01 AM) Why not get the money you can? To recap, so far, you convinced me that a separate download was a good idea. I was initially against it, but your argument won me out. Here is where it gets interesting. IMHO your most compelling point is the promotional potential of having the song available for download. I think that is far better than the profit argument. I wonder what the promotional budget is for a Star Trek movie. My guess it would be in the tens of millions. So why either send people to iTunes or similar to download the song for .99 or set up customer service, tech support, etc. to sell it yourself for .99? Instead you could offer it for free at your website. Promote the movie and have hundreds of thousands of downloads instead of thousands of paid downloads? It seems if you are going to use the song to promote the film, the few dollars in profit you may earn would be better spent as an advertising cost.

Trying to download a bit torrent
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 24, 2009 -> 08:28 AM) The trailer promotes the movie, and trailers as a standard are free. Music on the net, nowadays, is going towards pay-per-track, so you can play it later as you want to. You and I are just going to disagree here. I think its a win-win situation for minimal cost and some decent revenue, you think otherwise. Further, I think the companies doing this is one of the reasons the illegal downloading is occurring, since many of those people would do it legally if they could. Kids are walking around with multiple thousands of tunes on their iPods. Those were not paid for. I think you are way low in your expectations for a movie song. Perhaps it is different than other tunes, but when artists struggle with Top 50 tunes to have people pay, I just do not see them paying for something less popular. OMG, you are a Trekkie

Trying to download a bit torrent
And if you put it on an already existing web site, they are not coming to your web site to see the trailer. Give the song away. If they put it on their website, who handles these calls "I bought this, but the file is corrupted" "My credit card was charged twice" "I accidentally deleted the song and want to download it again" Give the song away for coming to the movie web site or seeing the movie. Have a redemption code print on the tickets.

Trying to download a bit torrent
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 24, 2009 -> 08:16 AM) Cost to put an mp3 up on an already-existing website for download: a few hundred bucks in labor, at most. Potential revenue at $1 a pop: tens of thousands, or possibly hundreds of thousands of dollars, for Paramount and the artist/label. Added marketing and promotional value: value-added, for nothing. No business should turn down a quick buck at that high a ratio, if they have their s*** together. Easy money. They could also make some money selling the trailer. But they do not. Wouldn't your quick, easy profit analogy hold true there as well? No business should lose focus on what it is they are selling, in this case a movie which cost hundreds of millions to produce. To sidetrack that in a quest for what will really be much less than $100,000 in profits, is possibly not worth it. Look how fast you received help in downloading that for free. You may get one in a thousand to pay for it, especially when it is free on the trailer. Think about all the hard drive and flash real estate in those iPods and etc. How much of that do you think is filled with music that was paid for, and how much was pirated, and shared peer to peer? They would have to set up a checkout, accept payments, then add customer service, tech support, etc. More than a couple hundred dollars.

I'm ordering a pizza
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Mar 24, 2009 -> 06:57 AM) I'm one of those people who feel veggies have no place on pizza, ever, and that includes black olives, which I love. We'll be ordering separate pizzas Sausage, mushroom, green pepper, and onion. I'll probably also toss a little extra oregano on top and ask for a small ramekin of pizza sauce to dip the crust. and plenty of beer. Oh, and I probably should not even have to mention it, but living away from Chicago for so long I know I should, cut the damn thing in squares, not pie shape.

Trying to download a bit torrent
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 24, 2009 -> 08:06 AM) Allowing the song to be downloaded also helps Star Trek, vis a vis the trailer and integrated marketing, PLUS they can make money doing it, which is ultimately what Paramount gives a s*** about. Its institutional stupidity. Compared with what they will make off of Star Trek, the song is mouse sweat profit. Pretty soon there will be no connection in your mind between that song and the movie. Probably even better is giving the song away, if you watch the trailer. Have it for free download on their website. But selling it? Bleh. Not worth the few bucks they would make.

Magglio Ordóñez, hypocrite or naive
Perhaps, and I would not want to put words in Maggs mouth, that he understands that a system that fits for the US, might not also be the correct fit for every country? The best analogy I could give is trying to run the local car wash the same as IBM. Some systems may fit, others would not. I do not know what philanthropic projects Maggs has in his home country, so if you know he is not doing any of that, I am sad. I believe everyone should work towards the betterment of their community. And as I have said before, embracing the system that would benefit him the most personally would be the American way. Me First!!!

Trying to download a bit torrent
Good brick and mortar analogy, but let me give a movie analogy. You spend $$ to have a song produced for your movie and you now own the rights to that song. You use the song in a promotion for your movie. You allow anyone to hear the song, as long as they also download a bit of what you are selling, your product, which is the movie. The assumption is without the movie download, you will soon lose the association between the song and the movie, thus not helping the people who own the rights to the song. Your assumption is Paramount gives two s***s about the song or the artists. They care about Star Trek.
