  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 28, 2008 -> 03:25 PM) You didn't answer the question. You just asked more questions. which question? I am trying to learn here, Economics isn't my field, it is yours. I'm just trying to understand.
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 28, 2008 -> 03:15 PM) What programs would you cut today to elimitate a $500 billion deficit? That's why we will never have a balaned budget. So how long can we go borrowing money? What happens when no one will lend us any more money? And why wasn't a 500 billion deficit enough? Why did we have to add to the deficit with a stimulus check?
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 28, 2008 -> 03:08 PM) Except we wouldn't because we would be tax revenue running deficits, and would have to cut spending. So we could never size the government to the lowest revenue levels? When times are bad, is it how much the government spends, or does it have to be a deficit? Allow me to rephrase. Projected revenues for a given year are X You are saying that in good years the government spending should be X-Y and in down times X+Y producing a deficit. Correct? Why can't we stick with just spending X in tough times and spending X-Y in good times? It seems the amount the government is spending doesn't matter as long as it is a deficit.
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 28, 2008 -> 03:01 PM) Under your theory, those programs would be getting cut at the time they are needed most, because tax revenues go down during a recession. No, we would be balanced then, and a surplus when times are good and we cut back on spending.
  5. You don't think the media is skipping out on Steven's coverage because he's a Rep to focus on a negative Obama story? How can that be? They are biased!
  6. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 28, 2008 -> 02:50 PM) I agree, and I'll take my responsibility for my vote for Bush in 2000. Big mistake. I give anyone a pass in 2000, what I'm still trying to figure out is how he got a second term?!
  7. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 28, 2008 -> 02:43 PM) I agree, and so do most people I know. Actually, I've seen a lot of people on here say something similar, especially those who've been through a number of elections. Then there's Kap. I really wish McCain had won the nomination in 2000 and was retiring and Obama taking over. McCain, and the country, got screwed in 2000 and we elected the guy who did the screwing.
  8. QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Oct 28, 2008 -> 02:42 PM) I was drinking Planter's Punch last night but I have some Pimento Dram steeping and I think it's a Jamaica Punch night tonight. It was a sad moment when the gallon was empty. I figure I got a bargain. $20 plus a $10 tip. He is my favorite. He even tossed in the use of a couple glasses but no paper umbrellas.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 28, 2008 -> 02:36 PM) That's great in theory, but terrible in reality. That was the type of policies that got us into the great depression and the scares and panics of the past. If we are going to have a government involved in day to day fiscal policy, their role is to spend when no one else will spend. They should not spend when things are going well. That is when they should be cutting spending down to a balanced budget. Its counterintuitive, but in application, it is the one way that cuts recessions short and prevents bubbles. So borrow money from China and give it to us? Does it matter what they spend it on? Because it would seem when times are bad, spending on social programs would benefit the people hardest hit. And why does it have to be debt?
  10. QUOTE (Chet Lemon @ Oct 28, 2008 -> 09:30 AM) Indicted on 7 counts--and convicted on 7 counts QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Oct 28, 2008 -> 09:51 AM) I believe this means that he will not be able to vote for himself. From the Ted Stevens Thread in the 'Buster
  11. POTM
  12. QUOTE (sox4lifeinPA @ Oct 28, 2008 -> 02:00 PM) I've been seriously considering Obama because of the things I think he'll do with environmental initiatives. I just don't know if I can swallow the other things that will come along with him. small picture, I'm an Obama fan. Big picture, I'd rather have McCain. Again, that's why I've stated I don't really care who wins. I am in the swing state of PA, however I'm happy with either, which is a nice departure of not happy with neither.
  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 28, 2008 -> 02:18 PM) I fully expect it, and it would be nice if either of them could be honest about it before election day. I'd also like to see them be honest that the vast majority of spending programs they are proposing will never happen either. If you consider them goals, it is a great indication of what path they want to lead this country on. It may take more time than they will have in office, but I want to see their vision of America. That, was a key factor in my support of McCain.
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 28, 2008 -> 02:14 PM) Yet Obama cutting the taxes for 95% of the country is smart? Flattening out the tax code so more people are more dependant on less people is supposed to somehow smooth things out? The less people that pay taxes, the more recession prone the country becomes. If you want a great example of that, look no further than Chicago. Their budget has a huge hole in, and they have some of the highest taxes and fees in the entire country. They have also increased spending at a ridiculous rate, and what has it gotten them? Looking to raise taxes and fees even more. Is there a difference in cutting taxes and sending everyone a $300 check? The issue as I see it is we keep talking about cutting taxes without talking about reducing spending. The GOP believes they can keep spending and send out $300 checks and cutting taxes. The Dems have given up on tax and spend, instead they are in line with the GOP in don't tax and still spend. Cut taxes and send checks when we have a surplus, until then stop spending more than we send.
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 28, 2008 -> 12:49 PM) So on a different track, what is their obligation to the other half of the country, for all of that great stuff we are giving them? Same obligation I believe every citizen has. Respect the laws, conserve our resources, give back to your community with either your time, talents, or treasure, serve in the military if drafted, serve on a jury if called, vote, etc.
  16. I guess he won't be going into the HoF with a White Sox cap. He gave all he had, sadly, at this point in his career, it wasn't too much. It was easy to see what a great professional he is. There have been a number of players who stunk up the ballpark and were asses. I have no respect for those guys. I have a lot of respect for Griffey.
  17. QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Oct 28, 2008 -> 10:39 AM) Did you use the Wray and Nephew overproof? If so, did you do the allspice infusion? Hope it came out well. It sounds like it helped fuel a bit of. . . relaxation at any rate. I gave the recipe to my favorite island bartender, along with a flameproof gallon container, and had him mix me up a big batch. I bought some crushed ice and whirled it away in the blender back at the condo. It paired nicely with the chilled shrimp at lunch. The grilled fish and crab cakes at dinner. I did have to walk to the store to get some fruit for garnish.
  18. I wish more parents would be certain their children can swim and more importantly, are comfortable enough to not panic in the water. I've heard of a program that sounds just like this, but can't say it is the exact same one. But basically teaching kids to swim at 6 months. You are intelligent enough to know what makes sense and what is crazy radical and potentially dangerous. (the old toss them in over their heads that they'll learn approach).
  19. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Oct 28, 2008 -> 12:49 PM) I'm talking as a percentage of voters not total number of youth votes. That may be. I certainly hope so. Of course the next step to make young people more relevant in the process is contributions. That's kind of where the rubber hits the road. Now it's basically fire up the youth then ignore them while everyone with money get's attention. BTW, as I was writing this I was thinking of a great short story that ties in with this. If you get a chance read "Mr. Cornelius Johnson, Office Seeker," by Paul Laurence Dunbar. Available here
  20. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Oct 28, 2008 -> 12:32 PM) Wasn't there record youth turnout in the Dem primaries? Again, with the population growth, comes record youth turnouts. I can't think of an election where there hasn't been record numbers of youth voting. And the Dems like to energize the youth vote and reporting the records and the grass roots enthusiasm is a great way to doing it. I'm not discounting the importance or influence, but it's been a constant in every Presidential election since Carter. The youth are voting in record numbers! Be a part of the generation like all your friends. Let me say this another way. Are there more youth in America today or four years ago? 24 years ago?
  21. QUOTE (shaneomacfan @ Oct 25, 2008 -> 08:27 PM) Agreed. And it really has been great to see, especially since older generations tend to discredit the youth vote, claiming that we never show up on election day. Methinks it'll be a little bit different this time around. Me thinks there are a lot more older people than college students. And its always different this time around.
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 28, 2008 -> 10:29 AM) Do you really believe that half of the country should be supporting the other half? I look at it differently, do we really want to live in the country that the poorest among us can build? Are those the schools we want? The roads? The military? It's not about supporting the other half, it's about the military, schools, interstate roads, CIA, FBI, and all the other stuff that comes along with it. All that is greatly reduced when we start living on what the poorest can afford.
  23. QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Oct 28, 2008 -> 08:55 AM) Unsolicited information alert! I'm taking back any perceived recommendation for the Trader Vic's "Authentic Dark" rum from earlier posts. I just opened a new bottle and they've gone and screwed it up. There's a distinct vanilla taste in the flavor profile now that has never been as prominent as it is now, and it definitely made an unbalanced rum punch when i tried to use it as the only dark rum in the mix. I'm sure it will lend depth used sparingly here and there, but steer clear of TV dark as a backbone rum in your drinks. Coruba, Myers, or Goslings are all much better options. BTW thank you for the recipe. I can't go into details, but much fun was had while sipping rum punches at then island this weekend.
  24. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Oct 28, 2008 -> 07:52 AM) The video is just a four minute extract of a 58 minute interview. That's how the liberal media does it
