QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Sep 15, 2008 -> 10:16 AM) ya know, i'd have to say we should wait and see. I mean, no doubt this guy shouldn't have been texting while on the job, but even the NSTB said not to rush and make wrong conclusions about the actual cause. Especially if they're just using the fact that someone recieved a text a minute before the crash. My texts, both recieved and sent, come and go at various times. It's not always instantaneous. Excellent point. But even if that was sent 10 minutes before, it would appear he was still texting while operating the train. Yikes. How many more are doing that?

It would mean he grabbed a page out of Reagan's playbook. Very sad indeed.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 15, 2008 -> 08:59 AM) For the record, Rock isn't the only former fraternity member on the board. I know, but Rock and I have had a couple exchanges about this. And for the record, I am a fan of the system, I just am waiting for the pendulum to swing further towards the Mission statements as written, instead of the mission statement as interpreted by too many fraternity brothers. The next time I hear a Fraternity member brag about the community service they did, (instead of buying their way out with a donation) or how it helped with their grades, will be the first. The next time I hear about a great party, how they got totally wasted, or "did" some chick at a party, will be too many to count. And former member? Shame on you. Fraternities are forever

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Sep 15, 2008 -> 08:44 AM) I hate the deafening quiet of wakes. Around my family there is usually laughing and crying, and it is never quiet. THere are a lot of variations. My will calls for hiring a comedian for mine.
-
I believe the unstructured time of a wake is much different then the typical funeral. There is too little time to gather with friends and relations during the funeral. It is usually too scripted and too formula. There are many variations on a wake, but I eblieve they all have value in the grieving process.

Media Bias: Perceived or Real? To what extent, and where?

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 15, 2008 -> 08:37 AM) Didn't you just post something about ignoring posters based on who they were and their political philosophies? I don't think so. -

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Sep 14, 2008 -> 04:47 PM) again, no one is 'hunting' for pro-Dem journalists to be banned. As far as I'm concerned they are COMPLETELY within their rights to do what they are doing. and we are COMPLETELY within our rights to critique. why are you trying to 'McCarthy' us out of our freedom of speech? why do you have this conservative witch hunt to silence our dissention? Not trying to get them banned, but when what they write is ignored because they dropped an R or had the D in paragraph 3 instead of 2, it's as good as banned. The end result of the GOP strategy is you will not believe anything in the media, only what the GOP or their surrogates tell you. Then functionally you have the old TASS system. -

Think about this for a moment, how would McCarthyism have turned out if Edward Murrow was labeled as just some liberaly biased media type, or worst a communist? I do not think it is hyperbole to compare McCarthy's hunt for communist with the current hunt for liberal bias. -

Lately, when I hear Republicans I think Kap, SS, etc or when I hear Democrats I think Balta, Jim, Rex and it really puts things in perspective. If it doesn't fit for those guys, then I reject it. I am guessing that most people rejected the Obama waffle mix and probably walked by with some dismay. I believe if Kap was there he would have smirked the I'm going to hell smirk, then voiced some complaint.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Sep 13, 2008 -> 11:21 PM) Yup, pretty classless move there. The big difference though is the organizors stopped it when they found out about it. If this were a Democratric convention and 2 people had set up a booth selling Palin Pork Sausage that depicted cartoon images of her as a pig with snout and all, it would have never been pulled, Kos would have front page diaries about how good the sausage was, Randi Rhodes would pass out from complaingin that the sausage was too opiniated and wanted to push its religion on the rest of us and it would just get chuckled away as 2 vendors trying to make a buck, not something that the party or its organizers condoned. Biased conclusion based on opinion.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Sep 13, 2008 -> 04:49 PM) LOL, I was hoping for a play on words. The one on my chest seriously looks like someone beat me like a red-headed stepchild. It could pass as a large bruise. I know someone who claims to be able to make a hickie on someone's forehead.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 14, 2008 -> 09:06 AM) As much has been made of big oils money going to the GOP, the silent story for years has been big banking money and influence has gone to the Dems. From what I have read, many in the banking industry have an interest in American - Israeli relations. That may also fuel those donations.
