Media Bias: Perceived or Real? To what extent, and where?
Texsox replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (mr_genius @ Sep 9, 2008 -> 10:46 AM) The Democrats fear mongering, bumper slogan campaigns, and mass marketing hasn't done jack for them. No it hasn't, the Republicans do it much better. -

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Sep 8, 2008 -> 11:51 PM) what the past 24 years have shown is just how bad the candidates and ideas the Dems have ran with. It shows that marketing and fear is a better motivator then facts and figures. We can sell crap to the American consumer without any problem. Just walk into any Walmart. -

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Sep 8, 2008 -> 02:06 PM) You and I will never agree here. Investigate, even let your biases lead your investigation, but simply report what you find, not infuse it with your glee and finding somethign bad about the other side, your disappointment at not finding anything or a bunch of made up crap to make it seem like you found something when you really didn't. Which one of these looks like it has an agenda? "Reporters acting on a tip investigated today whether or not Barack Obama had fathered 17 kids out of wedlock as he is rumored to have done. The source of the rumor was tracked down to John A. Whackypants, who told us that 'he delivered every last one of them himself". Our reporters managed to get access to the hospital records which show that no such births occurred, and that Mr. Whackpants is not a licensed doctor in this, or any other state, and had been recently released from a mental institution." vs. "Reporters today acting on a tip investigated today whether or not Barack Obama fathered 17 kids out of wedlock, as he is rumored to have done. The source of the rumor was tracked down to a John A. Whackpants, who told us that 'he delivered every last one of them himself". Clearly a man with a political vendetta, we researched Mr Whackypants to find out if what he asserts was true. What we found was that there are no hospital records, he is not a licensed doctor and that he voted Republican in the last election. "This just shows the levels that some people will stoop to in order to win an election", an Obama spokesperson said. "The other side is going to try and scare you because he doesn't look like them, because he is different." The McCain camp was unavailable for comment. Sorry Alpha, if this story was about McCain you would scream media bias that it was even reported, since it was not true. Just think about the push poll that Bush used to destroy McCain in 2000. Also, there would have to be a story about someone from the other party to balance this. Negative stories about politicians are not bias, nor are positive ones. And I guess some people need a D or R next to someones name to know if what they did was good or bad. I don't. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 8, 2008 -> 12:52 PM) The purpose of the US government wasn't to protect us from ourselves, it was to protect us from invaders. Its funny to me to hear the outrage over issues that impinge freedom of speech, or religion, or guns, but no one really complains too much as their freedom of commerce, which is just as protected in the constitution, gets given away. The purpose of the government is to do what the citizens demand. As soon as they created currency, they went past simply protecting everyone in its borders and went away from a totally free commerce. A totally free and unregulated system would not include a government backed currency. We accept the FDIC, fraud laws, etc. If the citizens want to add this protection, that should be a purpose of government.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Sep 8, 2008 -> 12:36 PM) We get it. Governments should control everything. Why do we establish governments? Protecting us seems like one of the first roles or government.

Official How Many Games Will the Sox Win Thread
Texsox replied to maggsmaggs's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Thanks SS, It is nice to know that as many people were as negative as I remembered. I saw four teams that I thought could have the kind of season that wins divisions. Win totals were second in my mind, with that many good teams. Which is why I only predicted divisional winner. -
If we could reach enough posters I wonder if opening up the chat room could be cool.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 8, 2008 -> 11:53 AM) 82-60 +2.5 games 20 games left to play. No bad for a season when it seemed everyone here under 30 wanted to hand the division to Cleveland / Detroit, trade for two or three years down the road "while the players had value".

I'm sitting at home, taking a break from school and work, eating a sandwich. Sox are in first, my gf still loves me, my kids are doing well, and my ex-wife hasn't called me in days. Life is Good

The birds and beas chat your parents gave you must have been very confusing

The payoff for the people and by extension, the government, is private home ownership, aka "The American Dream".

Prospects are cool, having a lot of them is nice. Ones taht are achieving is even better. But after four decades of following baseball, I have a hard time getting excited for anyone not on the 40 man, and truthfully, the 25 man is where it is at for me. I prefer to not be attached so after they have spent four years working their way up the system and are traded for a three month rent a player, I'm never too upset. Which interests me, more people would be upset with say a Josh Fields leaving then a Paul Konerko. Love that cheap potential. And Go GF. That is great for their community.

When it is a toss up, I'll take character, experience, and 10 gold gloves.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 8, 2008 -> 01:55 AM) We just have to be up 2 or 3 heading into Minnesota. We have to be able to withstand a possible sweep. If we are tied with them or one down entering the series and they sweep, the season is OVA. If we can't win one in Minny, we probably have no right winning the division. I do think 1-2 in Minny isn't so terrible a statement, and 2-1 shouts we won it. I'd rather not "back into a division title, but hey, anyway is ultimately fine. This weekend was solid. Adding to a lead while we're playing a divisional winner and they are playing a out of it loser, is pretty damn sweet.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Sep 8, 2008 -> 08:50 AM) What ever happened to 'who', 'what', where', when'? When did it turn into 'this is why I think it happened and why I think you should care'? When you read the stories and you can hear the feelings coming from whoever wrote them, they didn't do their job right. Unless they are a columnist/editorialist. But if you are a newsreader or reporter, you are supposed to report, not interpret. Sure, dig for more info if you want to be 'investigative', but still only report what you find, not what you HOPED to find and were disappointed NOT to find and are SURE is correct even though you couldn't find ANY evidence whatsoever. Exactly, the interpretation begins as soon as they seek to verify something the government has said or even begins to rewrite something. A word for word transcript eliminates that chance of bias. A direct from the government to you story also eliminates that possibility. They are reporting exactly the "w"s. And as soon as they begin an investigation they would usually have to have something specific to investigate. How else would they have caught say Clinton or Edwards? They wouldn't start out we're going to investigate every member of Congress or every intern. They need something to check out or investigate. So why even have a press that investigates? That is an immediate bias. -
QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Sep 7, 2008 -> 11:37 PM) My team would go as follows: C-Carlton Fisk 1b-Mark Grace 2b-Ryne Sandburg SS-Ernie Banks 3B-Ron Santo DH-Frank Thomas OF-Shoeless Joe OF-Hack Wilson OF-Billy Williams SP-Fergie Jenkins SP-Ed Walsh Cl-Lee Smith (bobby jenks one day) Hard to argue with this lineup, but thematically, there is no one from the team that actually won a world series in the past 100 years. I'm not certain where anyone would play, but that seems odd. And knowing how these polls go, there will be a few who played the past 5 years. Current always trumps in a few spots.

QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Sep 7, 2008 -> 10:25 PM) Ooohhh, this gets my blood boiling even 25 years later. Because, what song do they cut to in the next scene? Kashmir. And what album is that from? Not Zep IV, it was Physical Graffiti. I know, I know, Cameron Crowe couldn't get the rights to any Zep IV songs, but that just always bugged the hell out of me. It highlights Rat's inability to get it right, those awkward teenage dating moments that other kids have, and the differences between the two characters. We feel a sense of relief that Rat was not totally under the influence of the other character and could retain his innocence. Feel better?

We saw this coming. We like to think of our systems as perfect and import them around the world, but situations like this show us otherwise.

Media Bias: Perceived or Real? To what extent, and where?
Texsox replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 8, 2008 -> 06:42 AM) Do you mean TASS? As in ITAR-TASS, the Russian government-run news agency? Sorry, mistypes. Yes, TASS. Bush would not have any problems with his message being reported wrong, we would get exactly what the government is saying. As soon as that mews starts to get filtered, bias comes into play, and it seems that is not something we want. Theirs was a totally unbiased (by the media) system. You see it is impossible to have an unbiased system with independent reporters and editors. They will not report what the government is telling them, instead they will go out and search for other sources. That starts to change the government story and introduces the possibility of bias. And the only bias we are worried about is the bias between Dems and Reps. Seemingly there is no other bias in the media. -

TAAS had it right, news directly from the government, no bias. -
This too shall pass. I know it sucks, but really, it is far easier to stay stuck in a relationship where nothing went wrong and no one was hurt then make yourself vulnerable and find a *real* relationship. So ask someone, anyone, out. Go through the highs and lows of an actual relationship, you won;t regret it. Well that isn't totally true, and here at soxtalk we could fill volumes with takes of relationships from hell, but you just file the experiences away and move on, Soon, you will be ahead of most people, you will know who you are, and who you should be looking for. Chances are it isn't high school girl #1.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Sep 6, 2008 -> 11:38 PM) For some reason it feels like getting a 2.5 game lead over Minny takes the same effort as building an 8 game lead. And if we had an 8 game lead, it'd feel like a 2.5 game lead. Ain't that the truth.

There are some tough calls all around. I'd also have to think about getting Ryno in there as well.

QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Sep 7, 2008 -> 09:11 AM) Thanks! I spent my birthday indoors because of the nasty Tropical Storm that was passing through NYC. Did get a nice brunch with Mimosas though before hand, and then spent the evening trapping a mouse in my bedroom and releasing it outside. Hmm, is that code for some new thing you kids have invented Happy Birthday!! I hope this is your year!
