Quick we need to lock him up to a 7 year deal . . .

Yep, Greedy Joe Crede. I don't know why Joe didn't just trust the Sox to be loyal to him. After all, they wouldn't just toss some player out. Well except for Frank Thomas, but what did he ever do for the franchise?
-
I'm going to enjoy mplaying games for real and not watching to see if "these kids can play". Let some other teams start flying the white flags.

There is a God and this proves he's a Democrat, a Sox fan, and wants us happy* *I tossed in the Dem for snark

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Sep 4, 2008 -> 05:54 AM) I read somewhere that their EULA says something like that by using Google Chrome you give them the right to use, publish or sell anything you create using Google Chrome. That would mean that Google would own all your future Soxtalk posts! Wow, theirstock just went up by $.01! or -.02 after reading yours

Barring cheating or something like that, I always believe a team that wins a division has "earned" it. Not a team can win a game with a blown call, and potentially not have "earned it" but after 162 games you notched more wins, you earned it. Even if the other team lost it, and you were not the classic champion that won it.

You have to love being in a pennant race.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Sep 5, 2008 -> 06:17 AM) No one in particular broke it, the post table crashed and it had to be repaired. The indexing took something like 10 hours. Southsiders post table took 9:36, the rest of ours took 24 minutes.

QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Sep 5, 2008 -> 05:46 AM) its a tough call. I think it really could go either way, the way that catwalk snakes around the back of the foul pole makes it pretty difficult to tell. I wonder why they dont(or wont) set up cameras at the base of the foul pole looking straight up along the pole, so you can see where the ball passes Or the same technology they use in tennis, I think they call it Hawkeye. Or the strike/ball tech they already use

Like many Universities, mine has a severe parking shortage. I paid for my permit over a month ago and was toild they would be mailing my permit to me. I avoided the hellish lines. So my old one expires and still no new one. Of course no one can do a damn thing via email or over the phone so I drive to campus. Cannot park in a student lot, no current sticker. Cannot get a visitor permit, I'm a registered student. So I find what looks like a street just off campus, next to a parking lot. After only an hour wait, I receive my new permit and start the 20 minute walk back to my car. Only to see some jackass barney wanna be mother f***er issuing me a ticket. I ask why, and he says it isn't a parking lot. I said it is a street. He replies, who parks on a street? Wow. Who parks in a street? Well there is parking on the street in front of my house. Then he claims it isn't even a street, it's a four lane driveway. The next few minutes are spent with me "talking green ala soxtalk" plenty of sarcasm. There are no No Parking signs. No signs that identify it as University property. Fortunately, I can appeal with just a phone call, which I will. And if I lose, I will lower my donation to a campus scholarship fund by 10X the ticket amount. Bastards.

NSS, Your ideas are a step in the right direction, but IMHO still miss the mark. The basic premise is should we accept fundamental and extreme differences in the *public* education opportunities between any two children? Richard Rodriguez in his autobiography Hunger of Memory, The Education of Richard Rodriguez makes a powerful argument against affirmative action in education which resulted in quotes and admitting less qualified minorities over better qualified Anglos as some leveling attempt at fairness. His principle pbjection is these quotas come at the end and adjust the finish line, what needs to happen is adjust the starting lines so everyone has the same opportunity. Then what they make of that opportunity will determine who is admitted to Universities, gets hired, etc. Of course "his community" was outraged, but it made sense to me. Having a child start at a typical middle class elemetary school versus a child starting out at a poor school and the gaps start widening. Then in 12 years we attempt to close those gaps with preferential treatment, then wonder when these kids fail at a higher rate then their peer group.

You made a number of excellent points Alpha. To add, those broken windows and graffiti perpetuates a downward spiral for the entire community. Research over and over again shows that communities that do not keep up appearances, have too many absentee owners, abandoned buildings where crime can occur without the owner complaining, almost never recover.

Media Bias: Perceived or Real? To what extent, and where?
Texsox replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 12:53 PM) Ah, you joke, because that is all you can do. If it is so unimportant, then why mention it at all? I guess it is just unimportant if it is a D. Maybe that key is just broken? Didn't the Clinton's steal a bunch of W's fromt he WHite House keyboards? Maybe Howard Dean went around to AP and stole all their 'D' keys? Naw, can't be that, or he would be forever known as 'Howar Ean'. I wasn't joking. You perfectly emphasized my point. It diverts attention away from what happened and focuses on how it is reported. Exactly what the GOP wants. The identification is mentioned when it is necessary for those readers understanding. It would be silly to mention Richie is a Dem in Chicago. It would be silly to mention McAllen Mayor Cortez's party affiliation because they do not run on a party ticket, but we know he is a Dem. And follow any conservative newspaper and they do the same thing. So I fail to see how that means a liberal bias. -

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 11:33 AM) OK, it's not AP, but let's go with the NY Times. When talking about former govenor George Ryan, it takes 4 paragraphs to mention he was a Republican governor. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/08/us/08ryan.html But when talking about current mayor Kwame kilpatrick, the mention it as a 1 line sentance, 3rd to last paragraph. If you are in journalism, you know that most people don't always finish stories, which is why important facts are mentioned early in the story http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/03/us/03det...&ei=5087%0A Spokane mayor is sex scandal! First sentance names him as a Republican http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/223201_west06.html AP story about McGreevy, a pretty sorid affair itself, not one mention that he wears a D. Not even a throway line at the end. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/08/08/...in4333300.shtml Laziness, agenda, both? In the last post about this I linked to 2 stories by the same writer, one about a D and one about an R. Guess where the R was mentioned? I am sure this isn't 'official', but it doesn't mention anything about political designations and how to do them. http://www.scribd.com/doc/2664713/Associat...uide-the-basics See, the style is way more important then what happened. It perfectly deflects attention away from the politicians and what they did or did not do. An intelligent person like Alpha notices this above anything else. -

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 11:28 AM) THAT is a great question. The only thing I can ever think of when I wonder about that is the higher education system in America. The university system in this country, especially at the bigger and more prominent schools is VERY liberal, far moreso than even the media is. I would guess there is a connection. I believe it is because there is more value to the GOP as things are now. Any good news for Dems, or bad news for REPs, is dismissed as media bias. Oh poor us plays well in America. And who is explaining the "truth"? Conservative talk radio with layers of 24/7 opinion telling us why the coverage is wrong. It is by far the greatest political strategy that could ever be deployed. I mean that without any shred of hyperbole or Kapherbole . It is absolutely brilliant. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 07:39 AM) So when is the housewarming party, and what flight are you paying for? Instead I'll be spending part of December in Chicago. I am so stupid, and that isn't in green for a reason. LOL

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 12:10 PM) Well, that both refutes Tex since conservatives HAVE bought papers, and supported me, showing that even those they bought do not seem to be making money. So why do conservatives allow such liberal media bias? -

If you are an Editor of a newspaper, how many people will you employ to track down Enquirer stories? How many politicians are on your list to investigate to find out if they have a child out of wedlock? I guess I would be frightened if we had journalists placing a bunch of politicians on surveillance just in case they find something. If they received a credible lead, check it out, but to just follow politicians (of course an equal number Dem and GOP) like some sleazy private eye, just doesn't feel right to me. This story was handed to the media on a silver platter. It was from a credible source. Why didn't the media in Alaska cover this story a couple months ago? Why were they ignoring it? -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 09:02 AM) Edwards also flat out lied to the media about it when asked, so that doesn't help either. But there was still no real investigation, except by the enquirer. I have not read the Enquirer in years, but from what I remember, isn't the paper filled with stories like this that always seem to be false? If a credible newspaper used an Enquirer story as a source, wouldn't that seem strange? Why didn't Rush, Hannity, WSJ, or any of the Conservative journalists investigate the Enquirer claims? In hind sight, they should have, I wish they had. But I have a hard time faulting any media types for not taking an Enquirer article serious. Now we'll all feel stupid if we find out Bush really IS an alien, Elvis is alive, Brad and whomever are getting back together, etc. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 08:34 AM) FWIW, when the story surfaced, he was still a candidate for President. Again, we are back to McCain issuing a press release. We can chase our tails with predictable results, but we will never know if this would have been treated just like Edwards by the media. They may have dug this up and substantiated an Enquirer article, but McCain served it up on a silver platter, rubbed their nose in it, then complained about the coverage. It was probably his best strategy, and he could play the biased media card. And we know the biased media card was talked about before they released the news. -
Comparing the two candidates it occurred to me that Obama is probably the better motivational leader. Young, charismatic, good orator, has a vision and can "sell that vision". McCain seems the better manager. More experiences to draw on, confident, knows when to compromise. Thoughts?

Comparing budgets is a tricky business. Like running any business, expenses are higher in Chicago then in some other areas. Property costs more, school security needs are greater, etc. When the cost of living is higher, workers generally earn more. When the work involves personal risk, workers generally earn more. But the bottom line isn't just about the expense side of the equation, it is about the income. Why should there be a disparity at all? Currently funding per student is different in every district. Perhaps leveling per county would be a step in the right direction. If some poor schools can do so well with dedicated teachers, then the districts with greater resources can also continue to do better. After all it isn't really the money, or is it?

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Sep 3, 2008 -> 09:26 AM) I was merely referenceing the US posts, that's all. But to think that things like this also don't affebt people's preceptions would be wrong. Hopefully, not too many people look to US for their news! It all influences people's opinions. Friends, People Mag, WSJ, classes in school, they all shape opinions.
