  1. QUOTE (YASNY @ Aug 27, 2008 -> 11:42 AM) From what I hear, the internet has exploded with pissed off Cub fans over this. We all know they aren't too damn smart, so yeah, I can see them not voting for a Sox fan. In a heartbeat. IIRC and using the traditional north / south division for Sox and Cub fans, there are probably more GOP Cub fans then Sox fans. So there are probably a lot of Cub fans that never would have voted for him anyway. I would have been less harsh on Cub fans. There are some hard core Cub fans who are just as knowledgable and pay as much attention to their team as Sox fans do ours. Also, those casual, not paying attention fans are the fans the Sox and Cubs marketing plans are competing for each year. They are the swing difference in the attendance gap between both teams. So while we like to make fun of them, if 250,000 decided to attend a Sox game instead of a Cubs, that is a 500,000 swing in attendance.
  2. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 28, 2008 -> 06:26 AM) Here's the "uncompassionate" person who comes along and says, you built a f***ing city 30 feet below sea level and then wonder why it floods when a hurricane comes? New Orleans shouldn't even BE THERE anymore, but whatever. There is a whole lot of truth in that statement. Unfortunately, once the cat is out of the bag, it's tough to put it back in. And while not exactly concerning New Orleans, there are a lot of Americans living in areas that are potentially toast in the event of natural disasters. Sides and bases of mudslide prone hills, relying on levees and dams, etc. We want to live near nature which combined with humans, but especially Americans, having the hubris to think we can tame nature, leads to disasters.

QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Aug 27, 2008 -> 11:16 PM) Who was the first to be banned? OldRoman, BMR? What ever happened to DonkeyKongero, CrimsonWeltal, asshatsoxfan (rattling off U of I people,) SuperSteve, Be Good, Queen Prawn, Capn12, and Spiff? For most of the posters you mentioned, life got in the way. Some for happy reasons (children, new jobs), others for unhappy reasons (health, family).
  4. IF another Katrina-like storm hits, we will see a vastly different response. One thing I know from living in the US for 46 years, we rarely make the same mistake twice. (OK we reelected Clinton and Bush) but on stuff like this, we totally kick ass the second time. I think it would be advantage McCain.
  5. QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 27, 2008 -> 06:33 PM) boy I didn't realize that was it's path. Please, please weaken. The margin of error is about 300 miles right now.
  6. QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Aug 27, 2008 -> 08:07 AM) "This is some change I can believe in." QUOTE (YASNY @ Aug 27, 2008 -> 12:27 PM) From Mrs. Biden: OMG!! It's twue! It's twue! Nicely played both of you.
  7. To paraphrase Rush today he warned his readers how the "drive by media" will attack the GOP if they continues their convention while Obama and Co. are busy rolling up their sleeves and sandbagging New Orleans. I started thinking, brilliant prediction Rush. If the GOP screws this up, the media will report it. But for his listeners, they will bellow, Rush predicted it! Typical biased media. Great strategy.
  8. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Aug 27, 2008 -> 07:16 PM) I would hope that it least the language would have been more generic liek 'the chicagoland market', and that some enterprising lawyer could make a case that an ESPN website gig would infringe on the chicagoland market. Jay getting screwed by the Sun-Times like that would make me giggle. It could be almost anything, or nothing. There is a price tag associated with a non comp. What's it worth to each side determines if it gets done. With some of his other TV/Radio type stuff, I could see it being a newspaper only or possible a print only.

    College

I wear shorts every day, year round. I cannot believe how many students here are in jeans when it's like 103 degrees outside. I see some people dressed up a bit, for this area, and assume they are going to work or something. But I work from home most of the time and basically just stroll over to campus in shirts, a t-shirt, and flip flops.
  10. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Aug 27, 2008 -> 05:48 PM) With a contract like he had, there HAS to be some sort of no-compete clause in there. Maybe the Sun-Times can throw a little legal muscle around and prevent him from taking another sports commentator type gig that 'competes' with the Sun-Times. I've been surprised at times when people do not have them. It's just as easy to believe the Sun-Times did not meet his price and he said, fine, then you don't get a non-comp. But I mostly agree, they probably do, but it may be limited to the Trib.
  11. My favorite Mariotti moments are when we have another thread about some s*** he posted and why he's so wrong. Then two threads down are 60 posts saying the exact same thing. That always cracks me up.

Someone, I thought it was SS, suggested I post over here. But for obvious reasons, no one wants credit for that recruiting now. There was time when PA, Steff, SS, and a few others had positions that allowed for a lot more daytime posting. That was some of my favorite times on a message board.

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Aug 27, 2008 -> 02:48 PM) Only time that class is offered. Tell me it's some Freshman required and you can at least miss it half the time and sleep through the other half. BTW, do you have Prof Tom Meyer in the Physics department there? Really interesting guy?

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Aug 25, 2008 -> 08:14 AM) Gotta love people who dress up for 8 AM lecture on syllabus day. Goddamn right I'm wearing shades and my Hollister s***. Pickin up b****es ain't never been so easy. I'm also partial to the guys that use the safety straps on their backpacks, like they're climbing a goddamn mountain. WTF are you doing in an 8:00 AM class??
  15. QUOTE (YASNY @ Aug 25, 2008 -> 01:59 AM) Scott's homer was one of the most magical moments in Sox history. Rowand and Anderson's reactions just added to moment. Etched forever in my mind.
  16. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Aug 21, 2008 -> 09:54 PM) What you call negativity, another poster may call the truth. Felix didn't say Gagne had a better season to be a dick, he said it because he believes that Gagne had a better season. No problem, I fixed the bio.
  17. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 21, 2008 -> 06:53 PM) Didn't I already say Gagne's season didn't count because he spent the whole time with a needle in his arse? And anyway, I'm just pulling out numbers to prove you wrong at this point. I find it very entertaining. The team is in first. We put togewther a list of the fan's favorites and instead the usual soxtalk negativity comes s***ting through.
  18. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 21, 2008 -> 06:43 PM) Gagne made $550,000 in 2003. Thigpen made $325,000 in 1990. Hmm, Soxtalk. We run a favorite WHITE SOX player poll and decide to prove that the closer with the MLB record actually isn't as good as other closers. So let's start a favorite DODGERS List. f*** we can't even celebrate a Sox player who has the MLB record without people ripping Sox players. This list is going to keep getting better and better. Nothing like having a place that White Sox fans can go to s*** on their team and history.
  19. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 21, 2008 -> 05:41 PM) When did they start ranking teams by saves? By wins, and if a closer doesn't earn a save, it's generally a loss. I like guys who win. Some like guys who put up great stats. To each their own.
  20. As I said, saves alone does not tell the whole story. I'm a simple guy, I noticed that they have been ranking teams by wins for over one hundred years. So I prefer pitchers that win and save games. When they start ranking them by other means, I'll stop looking at wins and saves. It ain't how, it's how many. Wait, I did forget, we also have to look at the player's contract. Comparing salaries, Thigpen's paltry salary was way better then Gagne and his impossibly large contract.
  21. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Aug 21, 2008 -> 04:57 PM) Why not? We all hear how Obama is black and we can't be mean to him. because it would be racist. Great point. Someone in this contest should take the gloves off and really start with some hard hitting attack ads.
  22. QUOTE (shipps @ Aug 21, 2008 -> 03:17 PM) Lol.I know I was just pointing myself out kinda like when you commit a crime and you think you are a person of interest even if your not and you just break. It feels like a load off my shoulders. Any more you are suppose to be doing?
  23. Saves is a terrible stat to use? I'll admit it does not tell the whole story, most closers may never get 50 chances in a season, but it seems that the very definition of closer is to earn saves. So it may not tell the entire picture, but it should be the first stat to use. I've never seen how they won in the standings just how many.
  24. QUOTE (shipps @ Aug 21, 2008 -> 02:29 PM) Let me ask you this. How large are your balls? Actually they seem to have not changed in size, except there was some pain on the right side when the pain was on my right side. ATH, thanks for the concern, but I will not be going off the deep end based on this diagnosis. I was actually considering writing an article about various diagnosis and a random post on an internet message board was one of the diagnosis I thought I would include.
