Jay Mariotti leaves the Sun-Times!...Goes to the Tribune? Nope!
QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Aug 28, 2008 -> 09:13 AM) Talking about non-comps...first of all, I can't imagine any paper in the midwest even going near him. I don't know how a "columnist" could burn bridges in cities he doesn't work in, but I think he did. He's been called out too many times. Second of all, DeLuca's column was friggin' hilarious. You KNOW he has wanted to write something like that for YEARS, but was either told not to, edited out, or was a bigger person. But now...let it out, Chris...let it out! Jay...good luck in your career and I hope you get b****slapped by Woody Paige. Wish it were true, I imagine the Trib is already preparing an offer.

Quentin Article - Good Read
How I wish Brian Anderson understood this when he was in a very similar position. So often in life, it's effort, not talent or skills, that make a difference. I hope this is true and not just marketing hype, and that other Sox players are motivated by it.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 28, 2008 -> 10:04 AM) So you finally figured out the registration process on the 4th try, huh? And much like "Tex" is a stretch . . . Actually they were after me, if I am understanding the list. But it does give a whole new meaning to "sock puppets"

Working for a Candidate
I couple buddies and I were talking about working in campaigns or even being a candidate. I no longer have any interest in actually holding office, but I would be interested in working for a candidate's campaign. It would take someone I could trust to hold office honorably and honestly. The public policies would come second. What would it take to get you to run for office, or work on a campaign, either as a volunteer or paid staff member.

Breaking News: Vancouver earthquake?
QUOTE (KipWellsFan @ Aug 28, 2008 -> 09:52 AM) http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/stor...?hub=TopStories When someone says stuff like this is normal and nothing to be alarmed about, I always wonder if they are 1,000 miles away, or right there. That always seems to change perspectives.

Soxtalk: A History
QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Aug 28, 2008 -> 09:41 AM) I think we should hold a yearly Soxtalk member Death Pool. That way we could celebrate someones life......but also cheer the fact their death has given us crucial points. I would select Hi8is. Every extended period between posts I'm almost positive he has died of alcohol poisoning. I ran a death pool at my old office. BTW, checking who else joined around the same time I did, in rapid order, and on the same day were WhataGoob13, MonsterCock13, and BigNthePants83. Registered but never posted. I'm guessing we missed out on so much stimulating conversation from him (them).

Jay Mariotti leaves the Sun-Times!...Goes to the Tribune? Nope!
QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Aug 28, 2008 -> 09:11 AM) ''We wish Jay well and will miss him -- not personally, of course -- but in the sense of noticing he is no longer here, at least for a few days'' http://www.suntimes.com/sports/deluca/1131...eluca28.article Friggin' Hilarious Of course wasn't this the same Sun-Times who agreed to that contract? They look almost as silly trashing him as he does leaving. I think this career move will be as good as McLean Stevenson leaving M*A*S*H or David Lee Roth leaving Van Halen.

Soxtalk: A History
QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Aug 28, 2008 -> 08:15 AM) Hell, some of them may be dead. One day you, me, or anyone else here just may stop posting and it's possible no one will know the reason. And unless we're familiar with everyone's identity, it may go unnoticed. The admins and mods have talked about that before. Maybe it's a little geeky or morbid, but a couple of us have spoken with family members or friends who would post a message. I suggested posting mine in the filibuster so some people could cheer, and a few others could mention it is in poor taste to cheer until after the funeral.

Jay Mariotti leaves the Sun-Times!...Goes to the Tribune? Nope!
QUOTE (Steff @ Aug 27, 2008 -> 07:21 PM) Not only that, (lack of) laws on the books in Illinois make it very difficult to enforce them. Most states have "right to work" laws on the books. Plus, most of the time the parties involved just do not care when it gets to that level. The only area I ahve heard of it being enforced was when a group of sales reps left to start their own company and took clients with them. Then the suit was like a pitchfork. Theft of trade secrets, fraud, the non comps, etc. Even then, with those guys basically putting their employer out of business, very little happened to them.

Gustav and the GOP convention
QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Aug 28, 2008 -> 06:54 AM) Have all the hubris you want, just don't expect to government (ie our tax dollars) to bail your ass out. That depends on how you define "bailing your ass out". Do you mean spending billions on rebuilding roads, bridges, public safety buildings (police, fire, hospitals), schools, libraries, parks, utilities, and everything else the government is responsible for? Do you mean the hundreds of millions in direct aid that assures there are property tax owners actually returning and getting back on the tax rolls? Do you mean the government buying high risk land from the property owners and stopping development? As I mentioned before, once we started down this path, it is very difficult to get off it.

Owned (Moved from PHT)
QUOTE (YASNY @ Aug 27, 2008 -> 11:42 AM) From what I hear, the internet has exploded with pissed off Cub fans over this. We all know they aren't too damn smart, so yeah, I can see them not voting for a Sox fan. In a heartbeat. IIRC and using the traditional north / south division for Sox and Cub fans, there are probably more GOP Cub fans then Sox fans. So there are probably a lot of Cub fans that never would have voted for him anyway. I would have been less harsh on Cub fans. There are some hard core Cub fans who are just as knowledgable and pay as much attention to their team as Sox fans do ours. Also, those casual, not paying attention fans are the fans the Sox and Cubs marketing plans are competing for each year. They are the swing difference in the attendance gap between both teams. So while we like to make fun of them, if 250,000 decided to attend a Sox game instead of a Cubs, that is a 500,000 swing in attendance.

Gustav and the GOP convention
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 28, 2008 -> 06:26 AM) Here's the "uncompassionate" person who comes along and says, you built a f***ing city 30 feet below sea level and then wonder why it floods when a hurricane comes? New Orleans shouldn't even BE THERE anymore, but whatever. There is a whole lot of truth in that statement. Unfortunately, once the cat is out of the bag, it's tough to put it back in. And while not exactly concerning New Orleans, there are a lot of Americans living in areas that are potentially toast in the event of natural disasters. Sides and bases of mudslide prone hills, relying on levees and dams, etc. We want to live near nature which combined with humans, but especially Americans, having the hubris to think we can tame nature, leads to disasters.

QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Aug 27, 2008 -> 11:16 PM) Who was the first to be banned? OldRoman, BMR? What ever happened to DonkeyKongero, CrimsonWeltal, asshatsoxfan (rattling off U of I people,) SuperSteve, Be Good, Queen Prawn, Capn12, and Spiff? For most of the posters you mentioned, life got in the way. Some for happy reasons (children, new jobs), others for unhappy reasons (health, family).

Gustav and the GOP convention
IF another Katrina-like storm hits, we will see a vastly different response. One thing I know from living in the US for 46 years, we rarely make the same mistake twice. (OK we reelected Clinton and Bush) but on stuff like this, we totally kick ass the second time. I think it would be advantage McCain.

Gustav and the GOP convention
To paraphrase Rush today he warned his readers how the "drive by media" will attack the GOP if they continues their convention while Obama and Co. are busy rolling up their sleeves and sandbagging New Orleans. I started thinking, brilliant prediction Rush. If the GOP screws this up, the media will report it. But for his listeners, they will bellow, Rush predicted it! Typical biased media. Great strategy.

Jay Mariotti leaves the Sun-Times!...Goes to the Tribune? Nope!
QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Aug 27, 2008 -> 07:16 PM) I would hope that it least the language would have been more generic liek 'the chicagoland market', and that some enterprising lawyer could make a case that an ESPN website gig would infringe on the chicagoland market. Jay getting screwed by the Sun-Times like that would make me giggle. It could be almost anything, or nothing. There is a price tag associated with a non comp. What's it worth to each side determines if it gets done. With some of his other TV/Radio type stuff, I could see it being a newspaper only or possible a print only.

College
I wear shorts every day, year round. I cannot believe how many students here are in jeans when it's like 103 degrees outside. I see some people dressed up a bit, for this area, and assume they are going to work or something. But I work from home most of the time and basically just stroll over to campus in shirts, a t-shirt, and flip flops.

Jay Mariotti leaves the Sun-Times!...Goes to the Tribune? Nope!
QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Aug 27, 2008 -> 05:48 PM) With a contract like he had, there HAS to be some sort of no-compete clause in there. Maybe the Sun-Times can throw a little legal muscle around and prevent him from taking another sports commentator type gig that 'competes' with the Sun-Times. I've been surprised at times when people do not have them. It's just as easy to believe the Sun-Times did not meet his price and he said, fine, then you don't get a non-comp. But I mostly agree, they probably do, but it may be limited to the Trib.

Jay Mariotti leaves the Sun-Times!...Goes to the Tribune? Nope!
My favorite Mariotti moments are when we have another thread about some s*** he posted and why he's so wrong. Then two threads down are 60 posts saying the exact same thing. That always cracks me up.
