QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Aug 29, 2008 -> 09:16 AM) When looking back at the old cw threads, i hit the "next oldest" thread button several times to see some old threads and i stumbled upon one of Tex's polls that I figured i'd bring back up. I just find it funny that he asked this as a poll http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?sh...=10996&st=0 We had so much more important stuff to discuss back then . . .

I generally try not to watch the scoreboard during most of the season. It's just too damn long of a season and I like to smooth out the bumps. Now I'm checking the other games and catching the fever. And it's not the kind of fever that is cured with more cowbells. I'm laughing at Cleveland and their

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 29, 2008 -> 07:29 AM) I was thinking the same thing, but for different reasons. They rent those buildings out so far in advance, and the hotels, etc. That's a logistical nightmare if they have to cancel and reschedule. Good point, plus the prep work is crazy. Remember when the Astros had a 32 day road trip when the Astrodome was used for a convention?
-
Is there a legal point where they have to hold the convention? It would seem that holding off benefits McCain (as well as being the right thing to do). That post convention bump is always nice and getting it later would seem pretty damn nice. I'd love to see candidates and their parties tripping over each other helping.

Fan ejected from Yankee Stadium for trying to leave during 7th inning

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 29, 2008 -> 07:13 AM) The "Star Spangled Banner" is actually an old "drinking song" in a time of war. The melody was sampled from a British drinking song IIRC. BTW, the "tradition" only started in 1931, so it isn't like this was ordained from above a couple hundred years ago. -
A major argument and I wasn't in the middle if it. That was probably the last time I missed one

Fan ejected from Yankee Stadium for trying to leave during 7th inning
Texsox replied to santo=dorf's topic in The Filibuster
Of course I may be singing Oh beautiful, for smoggy skies, insecticided grain For strip-mined mountain's majesty above the asphalt plain. America, America, man sheds his waste on thee And hides the pines with billboard signs, from sea to oily sea! I have that feeling that there is more, no a lot more, to the story. A couple things that jumped out at me: Would we not laugh at some Cub fan that gets ejected? But even more telling You would not think that this was a set up and perhaps he was trying to get ejected? Nah, not in America. -
QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Aug 28, 2008 -> 09:42 AM) I really think BA understands this now though, in my opinion he has been a very important piece to this team. I love his current attitude. I do to. In the history of the game, very few young players have been given a bigger gift.

QUOTE (YASNY @ Aug 28, 2008 -> 10:38 AM) Believe me, I know that there are knowledgable Cub fans. That remark was totally tongue-in-cheek. I know you do, I should not have quoted you, it was more a general response to the general comment about idiot Cub fans. I believe it is important to realize how much effort Brooks and Co. make to attract those same idiots to a game on the south side. Get 3,000 of them to every home game and viola'

Good luck Steff. 15 years is a long time to be in a relationship.

QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Aug 28, 2008 -> 10:28 AM) If Jay doesnt head up to the New York media market or to a bigger role in ESPN I will be shocked That is a more obvious possibility. The NY or Philly markets would be a better fit. The again, perhaps there is a rival to ESPN being planned. Not wanting to compare the two, but perhaps this is a kind of Frank Deford National-eque story with Jay being part of a group launching a rival to ESPN and SI. I think he has just enough ego and chutzpa to try.

QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Aug 28, 2008 -> 09:13 AM) Talking about non-comps...first of all, I can't imagine any paper in the midwest even going near him. I don't know how a "columnist" could burn bridges in cities he doesn't work in, but I think he did. He's been called out too many times. Second of all, DeLuca's column was friggin' hilarious. You KNOW he has wanted to write something like that for YEARS, but was either told not to, edited out, or was a bigger person. But now...let it out, Chris...let it out! Jay...good luck in your career and I hope you get b****slapped by Woody Paige. Wish it were true, I imagine the Trib is already preparing an offer.

How I wish Brian Anderson understood this when he was in a very similar position. So often in life, it's effort, not talent or skills, that make a difference. I hope this is true and not just marketing hype, and that other Sox players are motivated by it.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 28, 2008 -> 10:04 AM) So you finally figured out the registration process on the 4th try, huh? And much like "Tex" is a stretch . . . Actually they were after me, if I am understanding the list. But it does give a whole new meaning to "sock puppets"

I couple buddies and I were talking about working in campaigns or even being a candidate. I no longer have any interest in actually holding office, but I would be interested in working for a candidate's campaign. It would take someone I could trust to hold office honorably and honestly. The public policies would come second. What would it take to get you to run for office, or work on a campaign, either as a volunteer or paid staff member.

QUOTE (KipWellsFan @ Aug 28, 2008 -> 09:52 AM) http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/stor...?hub=TopStories When someone says stuff like this is normal and nothing to be alarmed about, I always wonder if they are 1,000 miles away, or right there. That always seems to change perspectives.

QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Aug 28, 2008 -> 09:41 AM) I think we should hold a yearly Soxtalk member Death Pool. That way we could celebrate someones life......but also cheer the fact their death has given us crucial points. I would select Hi8is. Every extended period between posts I'm almost positive he has died of alcohol poisoning. I ran a death pool at my old office. BTW, checking who else joined around the same time I did, in rapid order, and on the same day were WhataGoob13, MonsterCock13, and BigNthePants83. Registered but never posted. I'm guessing we missed out on so much stimulating conversation from him (them).

QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Aug 28, 2008 -> 09:11 AM) ''We wish Jay well and will miss him -- not personally, of course -- but in the sense of noticing he is no longer here, at least for a few days'' http://www.suntimes.com/sports/deluca/1131...eluca28.article Friggin' Hilarious Of course wasn't this the same Sun-Times who agreed to that contract? They look almost as silly trashing him as he does leaving. I think this career move will be as good as McLean Stevenson leaving M*A*S*H or David Lee Roth leaving Van Halen.

QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Aug 28, 2008 -> 08:15 AM) Hell, some of them may be dead. One day you, me, or anyone else here just may stop posting and it's possible no one will know the reason. And unless we're familiar with everyone's identity, it may go unnoticed. The admins and mods have talked about that before. Maybe it's a little geeky or morbid, but a couple of us have spoken with family members or friends who would post a message. I suggested posting mine in the filibuster so some people could cheer, and a few others could mention it is in poor taste to cheer until after the funeral.

QUOTE (DBAHO @ Aug 26, 2008 -> 10:03 AM) Yeah all good, I got to keep my number. Although the salesman at RadioShack was insistent in activating the phone himself, and I was having none of it (as that would have activated a different phone number). C-O-M-M-I-S-S-I-O-N

QUOTE (Steff @ Aug 27, 2008 -> 07:21 PM) Not only that, (lack of) laws on the books in Illinois make it very difficult to enforce them. Most states have "right to work" laws on the books. Plus, most of the time the parties involved just do not care when it gets to that level. The only area I ahve heard of it being enforced was when a group of sales reps left to start their own company and took clients with them. Then the suit was like a pitchfork. Theft of trade secrets, fraud, the non comps, etc. Even then, with those guys basically putting their employer out of business, very little happened to them.

QUOTE (farmteam @ Aug 28, 2008 -> 01:42 AM) I prefer 1:15 twice a week to 50 three days a week, though. I like my three hour, once a week classes. Great training for Grad school.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Aug 28, 2008 -> 06:54 AM) Have all the hubris you want, just don't expect to government (ie our tax dollars) to bail your ass out. That depends on how you define "bailing your ass out". Do you mean spending billions on rebuilding roads, bridges, public safety buildings (police, fire, hospitals), schools, libraries, parks, utilities, and everything else the government is responsible for? Do you mean the hundreds of millions in direct aid that assures there are property tax owners actually returning and getting back on the tax rolls? Do you mean the government buying high risk land from the property owners and stopping development? As I mentioned before, once we started down this path, it is very difficult to get off it.
