  1. A little thought of part of the interview is you interviewing the company. Many times we are so focused on "getting the offer" we forget that the company has to be right for us. There is something to be said for being honest and candid and see if it is a fit for both of you. A couple times in my career I've had employees who were unhappy with a position or a company and when I reviewed our interview notes I see their answers which were 180 degrees from what they are now saying. One in particular comes to mind. The job required arriving at 6:00 AM. Will that be a problem? Most definitely not! I am a morning person and always wake up by 5:00 am. I know it's weird for someone my age to be awake that early, it is probably something I inherited from my dad, an eagerness to get going and get to work Turns out the guy was also spinning records (tells you how many years ago this was) at a club, after the second week he was late 4 out of 5 days and only lasted another 2 weeks on the job. Stupid for both of us, and if he had been honest, I had another position that had just become available, with much better hours for him, that I probably would have hired him for. So while thinking about the "best" answer, also think about what will be expected from you and be able to walk the talk.

  4. ^^^ Great Post YAS ^^^ I'm not certain if the fans would cheer Curt Flood, but the players and agents should.
  5. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Apr 10, 2008 -> 09:48 AM) We just took some of the (nearly) world famous child in blue bonnets pictures (it's a Texas thing). When I get them off the camera, I'll post them. Those are classics, and makes every kid look cute.
  6. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Apr 10, 2008 -> 12:29 AM) I can't disagree with this statement at all. My only thoughts on it are that Josh is younger and I want to believe that he hasn't hit his ceiling yet. Crede, as a 30 year old player, I would imagine has peaked. So I have hope for Josh to improve in the future, but, understandably, I don't have much for Crede. And, just so I don't have Crede's Crew eat my face off, I still think Joe's fine and he'll put up good numbers this year. I just want nothing to do with his beyond this season. I have no problem with projections that have Fields as the better 3b. I tend to agree. Although it will never be an easy comparison because they have different strengths and weaknesses. I also believe Crede will improve over the next few seasons, based on his back surgery seemingly being a success. But at their respective ages, as you noted, Fields has a much greater potential to improve. I just can't agree that Fields as already proven to be a better 3b than Crede.
  7. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Apr 10, 2008 -> 08:58 AM) You'll struggle to find a bigger Ross Gload fan than I. Trust him, he's like 6'5" 400 pounds easy
  8. QUOTE (max power @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 05:19 PM) When you celebrate lincoln you celebrate him because he was a good president, not because he was a good white president. Its not the same. His defining legacy was his role in racial issues, while not the same, definitely on point.
  9. QUOTE (the People's Champ @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 09:20 AM) I guess the point I was trying to make is I don't understand why we are comparing Abraham Lincoln to Jackie Robinson. There isn't really any basis on which the two should be compared other than, maybe, their connections to Black history. Post #29 by Y2HH introduced Lincoln to the discussion. You would have to jump back and connect the dots. I believe, again going even further back, to goes to the heart of MaxPower mentioning JR Day celebrates our ignorance. So a very good parallel would be to Lincoln. Are we celebrating the ignorance of the time or the enlightenment they helped to inspire?

For the young guys on the site, add Marx Brothers movies to the list of ways to Soxy's heart
  12. QUOTE (the People's Champ @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 09:03 AM) Im not saying it didn't help, but to think JR single handedly changed white America's views toward African Americans is ridiculous. He was just one man in a list of Rosa Parks', MLKs, Malcolm Xs,......and so on, to do something special to HELP change the way blacks were and still are treated in this country. My point was in response to the comment he just changed a game. As you noted, we agree, he did help to change more than just a game. A black playing was an excellent example on the biggest sports stage of the day. He was an agent of change for America's Game. He was, and still is, and excellent example of grace, and poise, under tremendous pressures. As a target, reasonable people saw how destructive the racial hatred was, and it helped to change opinions. It showed that blacks and whites could work and live together.
  13. QUOTE (Controlled Chaos @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 09:45 AM) I've never been in any tourney that didn't give 2nd place money. That would suck. For reference to my question, I guess I should stipulate...most times the prize is a 70- 25 -5 kind of thing. Prize money is never more than a few hundred dollars. The most recent example being the NCAA tourney. It was $224 - $80 - $16. $20 buy in. My friends father in law and me were gonna end up tied for 1st if Kansas won...with the tie breaker being the points. He told me to split it...and said his father in law said he would split it too. I told him to get bent. Especially since his father in law is fricken rich. I can't for the life of me think he is playing this stupid tournament for the money. Or maybe he didn't care about the money and thought he was helping you? BTW, Wouldn't 220, 80, 20 be a better split? Let the 3rd place guy get his money back. And I assume you received more than 1 team for your $20 or else I'd rather be the guy holding the pot, he was the real winner. And btw, before telling him no, I would have looked at both predictions for the final score and decided if I like my chances better, and by how much. That's what I would have based my decision on. When you made that prediction, you did not know which teams would be palying, and how they would be playing, so reevaluating based on new and current information, would be the smart thing to do, IMHO. YMMV. Did you win?
  14. QUOTE (the People's Champ @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 08:53 AM) In perspective Lincoln was a US president who changed the whole country. JR was an athlete, that changed a GAME Great point, However, I think you underestimate what breaking that barrier did throughout society. Rosie Parks did more than change one bus trip.
  15. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 08:51 AM) Not sure about schools anymore, but nothing around here closes on Lincoln's Birthday, it's business as usual, and I live in Chicago. Not business as usual Giant Sales!
  16. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 09:16 AM) And this is exactly what I mean, and I'll illustrate it with an example from your post. I have no issues celebrating Lincoln's Birthday, or JR day at the ballpark, etc...but with a respectful tip of the cap and rememberance at the start of the game, and nothing more should be necessary. There is no need to wear JR's number or a patch, just as there is no need for everyone to run around with Lincoln sytle top hats on all day, either. Let's look at the tip of the hat scale and Lincoln's birthday. Schools closed Banks closed Sales everywhere with giant advertisements on radio, tv, newspapers, billboards.
  17. QUOTE (FLsouthsider @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 09:09 AM) Which is why beer prices are up 40 percent at the grocery store. Your points are well founded, but just pushed a little too far. A grocery store operates year round and their infrastructure costs are spread out over that year and over a wider and deeper volume of products. If your local grocer was only open 80 times per year, you would see a much different pricing structure. At a grocer, some items are "loss leaders" to lead people into the stores, and some are the profit items once you arrive. And now compare the price of that beer at the grocery store and have someone buy it, deliver it to your home, serve it to you, and clean up after you. Factor in the cost of your home, electric, gas, insurance, and see what that grocery store beer really costs. We have strayed far from your original, and IMHO valid statement, baseball should be concerned about turning away fans at the gate bnecause of economics. There is a sweet spot between selling 1 @ $20 to one customer and selling 20 @ $1 to 20 customers. Your costs go up with more transactions for the same gross. So that one sale looks tempting, but when that narrow customer base leaves, you are in real trouble.
  18. I think the time is perfect to chronicle what we know in 2008 and this could be a very interesting tool to compare in the future. Basically while it is fresh, and the people are alive, and could be sources. Basically I see this as a reduction of the news coverage into one couple hour film. I missed his earlier films but I hear D, K, and U were very good. Maybe this sequel thing has gotten out of hand
  19. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 09:12 AM) I have no problem celebrating JR, Ruth, Marris, or even Cobb for their accomplishments in the game of baseball. But they should be celebrated with a small opening tip of the cap ceremony and a dedication of the game to them, and thats it. Wearing their numbers or patches or otherwise always feels cheap and empty to me. The very fact they're out there playing this game to this day shows they are not forgotten. I simply don't feel that I need need it thrown in my face for 4+ consecutive hours on end while trying to enjoy a game in order for me to appreciate it and respect it for what it is. What exactly do you feel is being "thrown in your face"?
  20. Energy prices are also a factor.
  21. BTW, putting it in horse racing terms, a Boras client, coming off surgery, seems to be the chalk.
  22. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 03:31 AM) that's why winner take all tournaments suck Yep, and why pot splitting is so common. Second palce should at least cover entry and any expenses.
  23. QUOTE (FLsouthsider @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 07:30 AM) Rebuttal to what? Your willingness to pay $8 for a hot dog? Baseball is a business and the team is maximizing revenues. Just not out of my wallet. I don't even live in Chicago anymore, so I'm not exactly the club's target market. However, pardon me if I think it's a long-term mistake to squeeze families and casual fans, turn them upside down and shake every last nickel out of their pockets before they leave the stadium. That certainly is a fair comment. But it costs more to stay at a hotel in Chicago than Streamwood. The beers in the bar are more expensive and so is the cab ride. While everyone on the plane arrives at the same time, the folks in first class pay a little more. The team is now first class, and charges accordingly. So like that same cold Sam Adams costs $2 at your local megamart, drink it at the InterContinental downtown and it will set you back $12. I can spend less than $20 and have a great time at my local Independent League game. The best seats, couple three beers, a couple hot dogs, maybe some peanuts. But the quality of play is not the same. Hell, Bevington was managing in this league a couple years ago.
  24. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 06:11 AM) Translation: I know the Sox aren't going to give Joe the biggest contract offer, but I am leaving the door open for them to surprise me. Couple of givens, unless you are offer your "rocker" chair, you leave every possibility open, and always talk nice about the team you are playing for. There may have been a player who did not send a bouquet of flowers to his team and management as he was leaving, but I can't remember one. So let's discount the usual babble that occures. A couple of points that jumped out at me. Boras: Seems fair to everyone and would explain not signing him earlier. Boras: Hey Boras, remember this guy? IIRC he couldn't run when you negotiated with the Tigers. Brilliant work btw, everyone is looking smart now. But this confirms what we all suspected, you were not certain he could play after surgery.

QUOTE (Kid Gleason @ Apr 9, 2008 -> 08:21 AM) Why only the past 50 years? Is it because we know nothing touches the brilliance of the Marx Bros.? You're right. I think it would be fun to hear BigEdWalsh and FlaSoxxJim tell us about going to see double features for a nickle and how orchestras were way better then talkies
