  1. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 4, 2012 -> 10:54 AM) AJ and Peavy always seem to be arguing. If anything, Peavy was sticking up for Hudson because that's Peavy's ball to catch.
  2. Awesome day to be at the park, sat in section 116, row 4, just had a blast watching Sale.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 1, 2012 -> 08:15 AM) That's not "Nearly twice as much", that's an increase of 52.1 innings on top of 170. That's 33% more. 25 inning increase is what he was comparing it too. So yes, twice as much.
  4. QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ May 31, 2012 -> 04:11 PM) I saw during the game thread that Farmer was ranting a bit, too. Did anyone hear what he was said? I'm sure it was nothing compared to Hawk's, though. He was pretty upset, especially about the lack of warnings given beforehand. I can't remember specifically what he was saying, but he was fuming about it.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 31, 2012 -> 04:21 PM) Just started AFFC thanks to Steve and I am confused about the new characters already. Hope it shakes out. For as bad of reviews as it got, the book was actually pretty good. There isn't a ton of action, and some stuff is dragged out, but if youre really into the series then it's still quite good. And agreed, the first chapter was confusing, just stick with it.
  6. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 31, 2012 -> 04:13 PM) It's a homeless guy. He was probably passed out on rum or high on something. BUT HE CARRIED THE BIBLE WITH HIM EVERYWHEREEEEE.

Just finished A Feast for Crows, about to start A Dance with Dragons. Very excited for it.
  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 31, 2012 -> 02:30 PM) Attacker's mother speaks out. Clearly God made him a zombie.
  9. QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 31, 2012 -> 11:22 AM) I love it. I hope there are posts proving me wrong for years. By the same token, I'm curious as to why I get no props for being the first one on here to say the Sox should contend. Posters on here had the Sox losing 90+ games in Jan/Feb. I know you keep saying that it's great that Viciedo is proving you wrong, and it is, but next time maybe don't about a player so quickly, especially one as talented as Viciedo. It's just annoying to hear someone pull this schtick because it's just an escape clause to for being wrong.

And "small talk" does not have to be brutal, I'm not a huge fan of it but I make it work for me. During my intern interview for my current company I mentioned baseball and the White Sox, turned out many of the people I interviewed with were big baseball fans and/or Sox fans, that stuck with them. When I started 2 summers ago as an intern, my manager would have weekly talks with me, and you can't just talk about work related stuff during those times, so I talked about stuff like previous work and leadership experiences, the White Sox, we've even dabbled into some politics here and there (always be respectful of course). Bottom line is, you have to show that you have a personality that they want to work with, that will work well with others. Almost anything you do for actual work will be taught to you by them anyways, so it's showing you are capable to learn that while also working well with others and potentially leading others.

QUOTE (iamshack @ May 30, 2012 -> 08:38 PM) To me, it's just making friends and connections...not saying "What do you do"? May I add you on LinkedIn? My best connections have been people I wanted to become friends with because I thought they were interesting people, and then other stuff came later, as a result of our friendship. No one is going to put their ass on the line or step out on a limb for some doucher they met at some conference and merely exchanged contact information with. You do that for someone you bonded with and trust...someone you talk to often on a personal level...you know all about their wife or their family or the women they talk about chasing...you've talked to them about sports and cars and your bosses...that is where the best connections come from. Exactly, your network is just as much quality of relationship as it is quantity. What I meant in terms of a business degree (or almost any college degree) being worthless is that no matter what you studied, you most likely will be working and getting paid to do something else (as Y2HH pointed out). Thus, there are really 2 HUGE takeaways from college: 1. Learning how to learn (and being able to show that) 2. Building a network (friends, professional organizations, faculty, corporate connections) Networking is about getting meaningful relationships, where you keep up with those people every few weeks, and as you go in different career paths you still keep in touch because something might come up later. For example, I was in a business fraternity, I am now working fulltime in IT, and I am also a U of I recruiter for my company now along with being an intern mentor. People that know me will have the chance to get to know the interview process better, get tips and hints on how to interview for this company, and you better believe IT managers that have known me for 2 summers now come ask me about intern applicants. I am considered a great person to network with because I have those connections at my company and the roles I have volunteered for, just like many of my friends and fraternity brothers are doing at other companies.
  12. QUOTE (greg775 @ May 29, 2012 -> 11:41 PM) How do you know? This is the first sign of life of this team in a long time. When the team actually does something of note it's easier to stay loyal during the rough patches. Only somebody like El Rockin cannot be fazed of the lousy play of the last two plus seasons. Your post is quite offensive. You don't know anything about my fandom. I've rooted for this team forever, since my days as a kid on the south side. This is the first stretch in a long time where you could be very very pleased with the team and the effort and the contributions of many. Rios is my least favorite player ever. Yes he is. Always will be. So what? When the team is clicking and playing well and winning, there's no reason to talk about his contract. It doesn't matter. Haven't you heard the saying, "Just Win Baby?" Best athletic saying of all time. Winning shuts everybody up. You offend me. Low blow. And my Ozzie posts are always in response to people who blast Ozzie. I don't bring up the topic. i stand up for the man. If the season ended today he and Robin would be likely candidates for NL and AL manager of the year. I never questioned your Sox fandom, but you have a history of pro-Ozzie, anti-Rios,and anti-KW posts, and you'll be right back there when this team cools off, just like many people. It's just what people do, when you win everyone forgets the problems, but when said team cools off suddenly Rios' contract and attitude are front stage again. I am enjoying this run as much as anyone, this team is a delight to watch. That said, if someone offers to take Rios off our hands we'd be STUPID not too, remember 2010 when he had a decent year? Yea, that was all from his May stats. Remember how much he sucked last year and the year prior? Remember his contract? We've seen the "reborn" Rios before, and it DOES NOT LAST, whether its a full season or consecutive seasons.
  13. Stone has some of the best insight and in game analysis out there, his ability to call pitches amazes me every game. If you think he doesn't bring any analysis to the game cast then you clearly aren't listening or your definition of analysis is "chopper two hopper."

QUOTE (MuckFinnesota @ May 29, 2012 -> 08:37 PM) Well, I have the skills a PR person needs, graduated with a Business Administration/Management degree after taking advice for not getting a Journalism degree and am now working in PR. But that doesn't mean I am better off with the business degree - I got through the courses but I sure would have much rather written for four years as opposed to stomach Principles of Finance and Accounting. That said, business did lay a foundation for me to understand key jargon used in business writing and business journalism. I'm at the stage right now where I am probably being too selective in my next job is going to be, but that's because I have no interest in what is hiring for a person like me (entry-level sales positions). Writing positions are few and far between, but I have heard that those with writing skills should try marketing or creating marketing communications materials. I may end up doing that if I don't go into the business side of health care or higher education. Thanks for the commentary, it is comforting to know you don't have to have a plan when you're 24. You are just expected to pay the bills and figure it all out in the next five years. Maybe move out in the next year and meet a smoking hot wife. No offense, but a business degree is almost useless without complentaries like networking, professional development, and leadership roles, no matter what school. It's good to major on business because intends to set those things up, but without them a business degree, or any degree, is almost useless.
  15. QUOTE (greg775 @ May 29, 2012 -> 11:01 PM) When the team is playing this well, all that other stuff is meaningless. No time to lament Rios' contract right now. This team appears to be clicking. It already had several chances to go in the tank (no pun intended) with some excruciating losses and instead put together a nice winning streak here. Keep it up. Oh please, when this team cools off you'll be right back to Ozzie posts and calling Rios your least favorite Sox player ever, and then blame KW for not trading the BUMS of the team.
  16. I know that was a joke but I still trade Rios in a second to get rid of that contract.
  17. QUOTE (G&T @ May 28, 2012 -> 07:46 PM) Spotted Cow is coming up through the sewers around here (not that I'm complaining), but if you have a selection of New Glarus, there's a lot more. The Dancing Man Wheat and Black Top are amazing. The Raspberry Tart is quite good, though pricey. And I have a lot left to try. Then there's Capital Brewing (best maibock I've had), Ale Asylum (Bedlam is the best Belgian IPA I've tasted), Tyranena, and Central Waters....plus I finally have full access to Bells, Founders and 3 Floyds which, for some reason, no one else seems to be drinking. Ah yes...it's a hell of a place. And now I need a job...dammit. What do you do for work?

Also, one thing that was upsetting me but again may have missed this detail, but it seemed like Qhorin Halfhand actually had two hands in the show, which just seemed sloppy to me, but then again I stream the show so the details aren't always easy to see.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ May 29, 2012 -> 01:57 PM) In which I'm being insensitive: Then maybe they should get a useful degree. You're not, I'm all for people finding something they love doing, but that doesn't mean you have to make a career out of it (most likely you won't be able to). If you love Russian Art History, get a minor in it or just take some courses on it, but go get a history degree or an English degree with that so you can market yourself into a teaching job or something. People who go to $50k a year private schools to study a degree where the job market is non-existent or depleted should expect hard times after school unless the family is wealthy. I do somewhat blame deans/school counselors for giving students the idea that it's ok to major in something you love and it'll all work out, because that's just not true, but students need to take responsibility for what they did in college. I was one of the hardest partiers at school and had a fantastic time, yet I had 4 internships and a fulltime job lined up before I even started my senior year.
  21. Depends on how the young guys finish out. If they all tank then I'd be pretty upset, because that means the next few years are going to be VERY tough to scramble together anything decent and a full rebuild would most likely be necessary. But if these pieces continue to perform and progress than you have something to build upon and look forward to in the future.

QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ May 29, 2012 -> 11:14 AM) Stannis wasn't captured; his men pulled him away from the battle. Probably jumped back on a boat. Also, Loras was wearing Renly's stag helmet. Okay details I didn't notice, I had thought the men pulling Stannis were Lannister men, but that's good to get clarified.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ May 29, 2012 -> 11:08 AM) I got my job because I had strong grades, networked, was involved in on campus honors organizations, and worked during college. It led to internships and eventually full time offers. It wasn't because I knew someone (unless you count me going out and networking with people). No one in my family has worked in Corporate America nor is anyone in my family and accountant or CPA. What I've done since then is completely related to me developing myself, working hard, and getting lucky to be in the right place at the right time (e.g., working primarily with very good people who take time in your development). I have a long ways to go to get to where I want to be in life, but I think telling people you are lucky to get a job out of college isn't exactly correct. Albeit, for different industries, things are different. But in my industry, most people earned their way to the firms they got into (there are always exceptions to that). I should also point out that in no way am I saying I'm the greatest accountant in the world. That is blasphemy and crazy talk, but I am going to pat myself on the back for getting to where I've gotten thus far. That's the majority path for most business/engineering students. Honestly, any of my friends that didn't get jobs was their fault, not the job markets. They didn't prepare for interviews, didn't get good enough grades, or flat out didn't even apply to a good enough pool of employers (aka they applied to one or two companies and even half-assed that). What I have noticed is that non-business students (or really from a program that isn't as mature as the one I went through) are really struggling to understand what it takes to get a job, they lack that professionalism and basic skills that employers and recruiters look for. I'm talking about cover letters, resumes, interview skills, etc, it's amazing how many resumes I've come across from juniors/seniors at other schools or in non-business majors and they look like a resume they made in high school. Not only is the format terrible, but the content is just unreadable or wouldn't interest a recruiter at all or doesn't say anything about what that person actually did. That is all stuff I learned as a freshman, and gained knowledge throughout my years but it's basic basic stuff, and really information you can find online which to me screams a lack of preparation.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 29, 2012 -> 10:58 AM) They skipped ALOT in GOT, I cant believe they didnt show the chain across the river, and also I expected the wound to Tyrion to look alot worse, at least it did in my head. Meh, the chain was pretty cool in the book but it was more about Tyrion saving the city with his defense plan. In terms of his wound, I agree it should've been more severe but I can also understand the difficulty of making the wound from the book look realistic without having to go through so much makeup for every scene. The one part that I was more upset about was the Stannis fighting scenes, so he's on the rampart fighting, his army loses, and is now surrounded by Tywin's army, sooooo where does he go from there? He is NOT supposed to be captured and that would be a HUGE change in direction from the books. Also, not having the "Ghost" of Renly was a bit disappointing. That said, I still thought it was really well done and I was glad to finally see some more actions scenes. I do hope going forward that

If you're an engineering or business student at a top university you should be leaving with a job offer, it may not be what you want to do but you should have some form of job. Personally, I used a family connection for my first internship after freshman year which helped set up my resume for on campus recruiting the next year. I ended up getting an internship after my sophomore year and continued that internship into the next year and into a full time job. I still have relatively low experience in my field (Identity Access & Management) and it's not even work that I love to do, but it's a good field to be in and I love where I am working with plenty of opportunities to help my advance to where I want to be. Even though I had accepted FT before leaving my internship last summer, I still received around 20 personalized emails from recruiters looking for IS/IT majors, and these were all great companies. EDIT: Yes I used a family connection at first, but the opportunities are out there and if you line yourself up right (join professional student organizations, network, practice for interviews, get on campus leadership experience) then you shouldn't have too tough of a time finding a FT job in the business/engineering fields. About 90% of my business friends are working FT right out of school, about 70% of those will be making $55k or higher, and about 15% will be making $65k or higher.
