QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jan 23, 2007 -> 06:11 PM) Witesoxfan...the dollar amt hasn't been released yet (unless I am missing something). Oh I know...the only thing that's pretty much been confirmed is that it's a major league contract with an option for 2008. And I still think it's too much for Erstad. I would love the signing if he had one fewer injury and I knew Ozzie would utilize him correctly. I know the one is not true, and I'm about 95% sure the last part won't come true either.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jan 23, 2007 -> 04:26 PM) Phillips is still the guy though I think. But if the Boys had permission to speak with Jeff Fisher, I think he would certainly be their 1st choice. I assume you have already seen that Tennessee denied that, so Phillips would be the #1 choice. I just wonder if they shouldn't go with a stopgap and then get one of the big names next year.

LOL, hopefully Jim Belushi doesn't talk trash back to Reggie, or Reggie will suit up and go off in like 8 seconds.

QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Jan 23, 2007 -> 05:21 PM) Just cause you are given a major league doesn't restrict you from being sent to the minors. Nobody is gonna hand him a job just because he got a major league deal, he still has to earn it and Ozzie and KW knows that more than anybody. I still don't believe it, but we'll see what happens.
-
Maybe I'm a psycho, but I'd almost prefer to see Sweeney get the majority of the ABs if Podsednik goes down, just to see if he can hit .270, regardless of the power numbers he puts up.
-
QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Jan 23, 2007 -> 04:57 PM) Erstad is here to compete for a job, Ozzie will not hand him the job. If he plays well in ST and starts, he is likely fully healthy and ready to be a starter, if not, he can be released, go to the minors or be a bench player. This deal has no downside. K, I'll eat major crow if Anderson starts 80% of the games and Erstad's utilized very well off of the bench. I highly doubt it happens

QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Jan 23, 2007 -> 04:50 PM) Huh? Why would this be a terrible signing, we have the money and its for a maximum of two years, so it really has no barring on our financial future. What's wrong with it? If he is healthy he can be a .300 hitter in the lineup, if not, he is a backup all over the place. Another typical KW move, low risk/high reward. Because he's not a .300 hitter any more, his defense has diminished greatly, and you know he's not going to be a backup because there's no way Ozzie sits a veteran for a 2nd year player.

QUOTE(WilliamTell @ Jan 23, 2007 -> 04:39 PM) Good, this better mean less of Mack at CF. I would venture to guess it means a whole lot more of Mackowiak in CF, but the name on the back will read Erstad instead. I'm hating on this deal too much. I said it earlier in the thread - in theory, this move would be outstanding. A backup 1B/OF type that plays 1B once every 3 weeks, and plays LF once a week, CF twice a week, and RF once every 3 weeks. However, I have a horrible underlying feeling - and I'm not alone in this feeling as I have seen already - that Ozzie will completely misuse Erstad and he will receive as many ABs as possible in CF, thus further stunting the development of Anderson. And with all the injuries and the aging Erstad has undergone, his range is all but gone. Include the fact that he's played exactly 219 innings in CF in the last 3 years (albeit all 219 came last year, a year in which he played 40 games), and this deal makes me feel worse.

QUOTE(Brian @ Jan 23, 2007 -> 09:39 AM) 1. Corwin Malone is still in the organization? 2. where have I been? 3. or he? 1. Yes. 2. I would guess, based on your sig and location from your profile, Carbondale or Wadsworth. 3. Birmingham.

QUOTE(bmags @ Jan 23, 2007 -> 02:05 AM) no my thought is that thome is getting older so ozzie may be going into this season only wanting to play him like 140 games, and meanwhile we don't really have a capable backup at 1st with gload gone, (green) and timo perez(green), maybe move kong to DH for a few and erstad at 1st. I think it'd be nice to have a pretty decent backup at 1b in case kong ever has an injury. Ehh, a bat would better as a backup 1Bman rather than an injury prone defensive minded 1Bman. And besides that, Carlos Pena - who is still available - is not only great defensively, but has a good propensity to get on base and hit for power. That would be a great signing if you are to get a defensive minded backup 1Bman. I'd like Eduardo Perez too, but sometimes it's too much to ask for crums of cake.

it's late, but happy bday to, like, the only other Bills fan I have talked to other than my roommate

QUOTE(Pauly8509CWS @ Jan 22, 2007 -> 07:31 PM) Expand on the corporate whores. Unless of course you're going to b**** about their politically driven music. Which was De La Rocha's goal for the band in the first place. Politically motivated music fueled by heavy beats and lyrics. I just hope if they do, they just play their old stuff and don't make any new stuff that's horrible like Audioslave's more recent stuff. (and I wouldn't compare the two, but it's been a while for Rage, so I have to be cautious)

QUOTE(BHAMBARONS @ Jan 22, 2007 -> 11:37 PM) How about the Minor league correspondent. Have good person in mind for that position. Good call on that one. The Mark Dalesandro award? -
He's Ross Gload without the bat

Another area of consideration along the lines of age is experience. That was why Jerry Owens was still considered a prospect by some even though he was 24 (23 and 363 days if you're keeping score at home)upon being acquired . He'd played 1 year professionally. That prospect status evaporated pretty quickly with his .260/.330/.346 line in the hitter's paradise that is Charlotte, but the point stands true. He's still looking at being a 4th OFer in all likelyhood. -

Ozzie Award (best in-game analyst) KW Award (best arm chair GM) Hawk Award (biggest Sox homer) Half-empty Award (most pessimistic Sox fan) Half-full Award (most optimistic Sox fan) Padilla/Merkin/Rogers/Cowley Award (best Soxtalk writer) others could be thought of too, cuz those were just off the top of my head. -
QUOTE(redandwhite @ Jan 22, 2007 -> 07:38 PM) I saw that a couple days ago and I'm still pissed off about it. Basically they are weeding out/forcing the most diehard of baseball fans, and it makes zero sense to me. I suppose the NFL has been doing the same thing for years, but I just don't get why MLB would do such a thing. It's a financial move. DirecTV buys the rights from the MLB, and the MLB will always get more money from DirecTV than they will from the consumer. DirecTV does it because they then own a monopoly on Extra Innings, thus if you wish to buy ExtraInnings, you must also purchase DirecTV. Business wise, it's a good move for both MLB and DirecTV. It's a coldass move by MLB for those of us with digital cable. (FWIW, I just enjoyed the games in the first week of the season and the week after the ASB. It's still s***ty)

f*** This would be such a great move in theory, and you just know it is going to completely f*** this team over f*** f*** f***

I hate to be a critic, but why are there two awards for political views, and one for baseball views? I mean, afterall, this IS a White Sox message board. -

I need to see Uggla for another before I put him in the upper echelon. There's something about him - and I'm not exactly sure what...perhaps the .340 OBP or a mediocre 5.35 AB/K...that I don't trust yet. I also think he's a very good candiate to regress this year.

Twins going to arbit with 4 players potentially

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jan 22, 2007 -> 04:33 PM) Twins signed Nationals cast off Ramon Ortiz to a one year, 3.1 million dollar deal. This is a Nationals rotation that currently has Tim Redding as the #3, yet they let Ortiz go. At some point, the magic has to start running out. Doesn't it? He'll probably make a quick visit to Rincon's locker and say hi. -
QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Jan 22, 2007 -> 04:28 PM) I'm not the biggest Heineken fan, but at 53 cents a bottle I think I could be! It'd be better than drinking pisswater every weekend, that's for sure. (I will still take my pisswater at $13.99 a 30, thank you very much)
