  1. QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 01:45 AM) I'll sleep fine at night without his 4-35 since the ASB coming here. As will I. The only reason Mack had any sort of attractiveness was his ability to play 50,000 positions. Now we have that in Blum. Fine by me. Of course, what would be funny is if this was the only move KW made. Stark says the Sox will either make a huge move or no move, and then the Sox make some small ass move like this. It pretty much is a no move, but technically, it is a move.
  2. QUOTE(sox-r-us @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 01:49 AM) And none of those message boards have a link? :rolly It being posted that it was reported on a radio station is good enough for me, for now
  3. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 01:43 AM) Nothing like another low BA, low OBP guy for the team. Low OBP because of his low average. The guy is not afraid to draw a walk. A guy with a .242 BA with a .323 OBP is not awful. Not a non-patient hitter who has a .260+ BA and has an OBP of less then .320.
  4. There a chance that Mo is like not right in the head right now? He seemed completely devastated when he got traded the first time, and he has not been the same since then.
  5. If true, Mackowiak is gonna be a non-White Sox member come tomorrow
  6. QUOTE(knightni @ Jul 31, 2005 -> 12:07 AM) Email em. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DON'T I DON'T WANT GRIFFEY BEING A SAWK
  7. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jul 30, 2005 -> 08:34 PM) Oh, yeah? Who's our back-up SS, then? Ozuna, Mack, Goochi, Crede in an emergency, Dye in a huge emergency. We have guys who can play SS. The 2 reasons I would rather not get rid of Willie are his speed and his little bit of versatility. A guy who can play 2B/SS and essentially all 3 OF positions(though he would be not so hawt in RF with his arm like a girl...no offense girls) is very valuable...it's one of the reasons Mackowiak is in the majors. And that kind of speed off the bench is very nice to have, especially come playoff time. Felix Diaz for Mack might work...if not, I'm almost sure Diaz and Munoz makes it.
  8. QUOTE(Jordan4life_2005 @ Jul 30, 2005 -> 04:15 AM) Wite, believe me, I would love to have Wagner. I hope you're right. I hope I'm right too. Wagner puts us over the top, IMO. After you make the Marte-BMac trade, you have 2 things to worry about at that point in time. For starters, the most pressing need, is the bat against RHP. Be it Matt Stairs, Daryle Ward, or perhaps even taking a flyer on a guy like Scott Spiezio or(who I just said I didn't think the Sox had any use for whatsoever in another thread) Jose Cruz Jr, who, while putting up a .213 12 28 line, he has also put up .347/.436/.783 splits overall...and .222 12 24 .347/.487/.835 splits against RHP. The second most pressing need is then getting a swingman for the pen. Be it from within, with (preferably) and most likely Felix Diaz, or by acquiring one, perhaps a guy like Zach Day or John Wasdin(and I say preferably with Diaz just because I really do not want to have to give up a player to get either of those 2, though Day could be a good value pickup). Diaz does not have to be in the majors, with Jenks and Vizcaino both at the back of the pen, with Cotts, Hermanson, Politte, and Wagner all as our studs. In all reality, with those 4 at the end of our pens, games can become 6 inning affairs...that is by far the most important aspect in my mind. I am not a future teller, obviously...but that's just kind of what I think is running through Ed Wade's mind right now. He realizes Houston is playing up to their potential, with Washington starting to fade, and this is his last chance, in all likelyhood, to create a winner. He probably realizes his team will do nothing with their current rotation, so by adding a Burnett, he can increase his team's chances. His pen loses a lot...but he can only hope that Vicente Padilla adapts well to relief work. I think with Wade, you will either see a guy going balls out to save his job, or a guy praying and praying that his team finally gets it, gels, and goes on a big run. The latter will likely not happen. And Kalapse, if you do not read all of that one above or this one, I will do something not so nice to you. I will have to think of it later though.
  9. QUOTE(sircaffey @ Jul 30, 2005 -> 12:43 AM) I'd happily give up a huge package for Manny Ramirez if JR is willing to do it. There are only a couple players that impact a team more than Manny. You have no problem giving up Rowand, Politte, and, Everett(for hypothetical purposes only), while taking on that $15+ mill, with those 3's salaries taken out? No problem with Timo becoming the full-time DH(since I'm sure that's exactly what Ozzie would do, because Timo's a grinder)? Manny's a hell of a good hitter...probably the best pure hitter in the AL, second best in the majors to Big Al, since we have no idea what Bonds is going to do off the juice. But he is not worth 2 everyday players and the best statistical reliever in the game.
  10. QUOTE(Jordan4life_2005 @ Jul 30, 2005 -> 02:05 AM) The Phillies are only 2.5 games out of the wildcard. I'd be utterly shocked if the Phillies traded him now. Ed Wade has to do something to save his job. The Phillies will not win the Wild Card with their current roster. They need atleast 1 more good SP, be it a 2 or a 3, very, very badly. Their pen, on the other hand, is pretty deep all around. I also do not think Marte would remain a Phillie. The Phils have 2 LHP in their pen, Fultz, who has had an outstanding year, and Cormier, who has had a bad year, are pretty much mainstays. I can't say that I've ever seen Cormier pitch, but from what I can tell, his value right now, in all shapes and forms, is too low for a BMac-Cormier for Burnett trade to work, and there is no point in losing Fultz in the deal, particularly since Fultz-BMac won't get the job done either. The fact that Marte, with control and health, is probably a top 3 LHP in the league only helps Florida in this cause. Another thing that could work to the Sox favor in this is that Philly may have to give up another prospect to get Burnett away from Florida. To me, the most coveted SP who is available(unless Schmidt somehow becomes available within the next 36 hours) should get more than a good SP prospect with so-so stuff and a LH reliever who is having a very down year. FG, in his first good year since about 01, netted the Sox top prospect, their future starting catcher, and another fringe type prospect who can hit the hell out of the ball. Why should Philly not have to give up another prospect is kind of what I am wondering. Personally, I am not going to worry about the offense at this point in time. There is still another month of waiver dealings after this, and the Sox only real weakness is against RHP when Podsednik is not getting on base. They are very solid all around against LHP(Everett is hitting about .321 against LHP, Dye has a .994 OPS against LHP, Uribe has a .926 OPS against LHP(ya, that same Uribe who has a devastating .653 OPS on the year...methinks he should not face another RHP all year), Rowand's .386 OBP against LHP, and others have been solid against them too, though those are probably our best 4), but struggle mightily offensively against RHP(like Uribe's OPS in the .550's against RHP, or Everett's sub .300 OBP agaisnt RHP). Preferably, getting 1 guy in August who can hit RHP at about a .350/.500 tune would be good enough...especially if it were to mean someone like Timo getting pushed out. It may end up taking playing time away from Dye and Everett, but with both of them putting up mediocre numbers(or bad in Everett's case) against RHP, getting someone in there who hits RHP well will only help the team. And I think I would normally ramble on some more, but I'm tired, so I'll just let it stay like that.
  11. QUOTE(Soxnbears01 @ Jul 29, 2005 -> 12:02 AM) that's enough boys, give it a rest. I say... ...blame Greasy.
  12. Sox basically say we'll give you whatever we can do get Wagner, and they still say no? Ed Wade is dumber than I thought. He has to realize that his current team is garbage, or at the very least, .500, and has no chance of winning the division. He should look to get an upgrade offensively, probably 3B to get Bell's .653 OPS out of the lineup, and he should really find a taker for Vicente Padilla. The Phils rotation right now I believe is Myers-Lieber-Lidle-Tejada-Padilla...which, after Myers, is pretty bad. If I am Philly, I tell Williams that if he can get Burnett, that a package of Burnett and Crede will work if he agrees to take on some extra money someway, shape, or form. I would honestly not be surprised to see a package of like Marte, McCarthy, and perhaps Munoz/Diaz/Vizcaino for Burnett and Lowell, with the Sox then sending Burnett and Crede to Philly for perhaps Wagner and either Padilla, just to get rid of him, plain cash, or both. Lowell is then slipped into the lineup, Padilla(replacing Vizcaino, though becoming a swingman) is put into the pen along with Wagner(replacing Marte as the second token lefty in the pen) is put into the closer role, filling in very nicely. Florida gets Lowell's .653(though rising) OPS out of the lineup with Conine going to LF, and Miggy going to 3B, and getting a stud LH reliever while also receiving a good SP for the future who is fairly close to the majors. Philly receives a SP boost in Burnett, and an offensive and probably defensive upgrade in Crede too. What I could also see is this deal being contingent upon Philly being able to dump Bell elsewhere...perhaps to the Sox, perhaps elsewhere. The Sox could also potentially keep McCarthy, making it a true 3-team trade, with Florida receiving Padilla and Marte, the Sox receiving Lowell and Wagner, and the Phillies receiving Burnett and Crede. I could also see, in the above scenario, the Sox taking on David Bell too. That all makes way too much sense for the Sox, and possibly not enough for the other two...but dammit I tried. And here I was determined to not make a long winded, complete speculation post all year...and then I pull off this doozy. Woo-hoo, drinks on me.
  13. QUOTE(ChWRoCk2 @ Jul 28, 2005 -> 09:08 PM) what the sox need is a reliever/spot starter and a good lefty or righty bat i honestly think we will only come out with a pitcher at the least That last line has me a bit confused. 'only come out with a pitcher at the least' Oooooooooook...? I don't think standing pat is the right move...this team, as a whole, is not World Series caliber with the pen the way it is. You add a stud reliever, and the Sox are a very dangerous team...they are even more dangerous if you can do it without having to give up McCarthy, because then you will have a little bit of SP depth. Another bat would be nice, but unless he is a SS, I am not sure where you put him. Perhaps DH, but perhaps not as well. It's basically wait and see. Speculate all you want to, I 'spose.
  14. QUOTE(knightni @ Jul 28, 2005 -> 09:09 PM) That's what she said. Your(hehe) one lucky man
  15. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jul 28, 2005 -> 11:23 PM) Bruce Levine just did an update on ESON Radio 1000 and he confirmed that Greasywheels DID in fact eat a sandwich today and it WAS good. To play along... Phil Rogers speculates that Greasy probably ate a ham sandwich, though possibly it was turkey. He also speculates that Greasy may go all out on his next one, possibly opting for a combination roast beef-turkey with a cheddar-colby jack combo, or he could trade this for a beef and bean burrito(he may also wear a cape while doing this ) . Responding to a question by a fan, knightni is looking at a fresh PB&J sandwich to replace his older ham sandwich. Stay tuned for details...
  16. QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Jul 28, 2005 -> 06:31 PM) W/out Moss their recieiving core is just a bunch of avg. players 2-3's.... Burleson, Taylor, and Robinson all are solid 2's but none are a 1. I think I hinted at that in my post. And I really still do not think it matters. They have a crazy amount of depth in that receiving corps...4 players all basically at the same skill level, all having their own special talents.
  17. QUOTE(DABearSoX @ Jul 28, 2005 -> 11:26 AM) HAHAHAHAHAA and is this purely speculation or what......I don't see how you can even say that, I want to hear a reason why Gload is better defensivly....PK has made some outstanding plays this year and I might add has not lost a game because of an error....and what do you think makes PK so bad at defensive, because he is slow???? it just makes me laugh when you people say Gload is so much better then PK at everything.....he has not been battle tested and he hit .321 in like 100 ABs last year......thats the only thing you people are going on Defensively, it is the same reason I take Jose Valentin at SS over Royce Clayton. And Gload hit .321 in 234 ABs...still limited playing time, but it is more then "like 100 ABs" The fact that the lowest he has hit at any minor league stop is .261 in his first year(and the second lowest is .284) of minor league baseball tells me he can hit. He has hit at every level in the minors, and he has hit in the majors, so what is stopping him from being a good full-time player? That answer is of course simple enough, the fact that he has yet to be named the starter. If the Oakland Athletics do not pick up Hatteberg's option for next year(or if it has been picked up already, I'm not sure), I wouldn't be surprised in the least if Gload is starting at 1B for them next year.
  18. His latest outing against Boston(2 IP, 7 H, 4 R(3 ER), 2 HR, 0 BB, 2 K), just destroyed his WHIP. Before that outing, his 2.70 ERA and 1.29 WHIP, while nothing spectacular, is very solid. If it cost, say, Arnie Munoz, I would be all for it. In all likelyhood, LaMar will probably be really cool and ask for like Cotts, Young, and McCarthy. And to suggest Baez will not be better than Jenks is just, for lack of a better term, dumb. Jenks has shown very little control at the MLB level, and he is getting hit. He has allowed 17 baserunners in 8.3 IP. His K/9 of 14.1 is ridiculous, but if you can't keep guys from getting on base, you're not doing much for your team. Baez is an upgrade over Vizcaino, for sure, and I would take him over Marte, simply because Marte has as much control over his fastball as babies do over their bodily functions. Ozzie wouldn't, because he loves lefties, which is why we've had to suffer through Kevin Walker this year, instead of having atleast a mediocre reliever in Jeff Bajenaru, or even Arnie Munoz, Felix Diaz, or Bobby Jenks.
  19. QUOTE(Al Lopez's Ghost @ Jul 28, 2005 -> 11:02 AM) I believe that there's an inordinate amount of nohitters in September. Combination of minor league callups in the lineup, guys no bearing down if they're out of the race, whatever. I remember the Sox being no hit by Mike Warren, the Sox throwing no hitters like Joe Cowley's (his last major league win, I think), and a combo with I want to say Blue Moon Odom and Frankie Barrios. I think we will see one in September. That combo you talk about reminds me of Houston in I think 2003. Oswalt was out of the game after 4 with an injury, not allowing a hit, and the Houston bullpen kept the Yankees offense at bay the rest of the game, not allowing a hit. And then I remember the Yankees winning like 47 in a row after that. EDIT: Looked it up. I lose. Oswalt left after 1 June 11, 2003 - Astros 8, Yankees 0
  20. I love Cruz. I wanted this guy to be our starting CFer in 2003. Sort of a blessing in disguise he wasn't, else, we probably would not have Rowand. We got no room for him in the next 5 years in all likelyhood, and I don't like him as much as I did back then...but he will start. Colorado should call him up and see if that park can resurrect another career.
  21. QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Jul 28, 2005 -> 03:41 AM) That was with most of the defense's attention towards Moss..... their WR core is crap now w/out Moss but I think their offense will be ok. Culpepper is a better QB than some people give him credit for and their running game is pretty good... But its definitely wont be near as good as it was with Moss... That was also with the defense knowing Minnesota is going to pass it almost every down. Minnesota's run game will be much more involved this year, even in losing Smith. A 4 headed beast of Bennett, Williams, Moore, and Fason will be enough of a running game for Minnesota, since all could probably be starting on bad teams, or being a good 2nd back on almost all teams. You start to mix in the play-action more, and Burleson will be open just as much in all likelyhood. That is a good point, because Burleson was not nearly as solid as the #1 last year with Moss out then he was with Moss in...he had 1 big game(11 rec, 141 yds, TD against GB...then again, my grandma could have a good game receiving against GB's secondary), 3 very mediocre games(6 for 53 against Tennessee, 6 for 43 against the Giants with a TD, and then 5 for 52 against Detroit with a TD), and 1 bad game(1 for 8, a TD, against Indianapolis). You just consider that the Vikings do have a lot of depth at WR(Burleson, Robinson, Taylor, Williamson, Campbell on his fly patterns), and how good Culpepper really is, and I think they will be just fine offensively. Culpepper won't throw for 4700 yards again in all likelyhood, but somewhere around 3500-4000 would probably be more reasonable.
  22. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jul 28, 2005 -> 05:03 PM) OH LET'S GO GET HIM!!! /peeing myself WE NEED HIS BAT! OMG OMG OMG, /peeing myself again WE WILL WIN THE WORLD SERIES WITH HIM, OMG OMG OMG GO GET HIM! /drying off How rediculous is that? About as ridiculous as your spelling of the word ridiculous
  23. Moving this to Inside Dish... What they do with it will work for me
  24. QUOTE(whitesoxfan13 @ Jul 28, 2005 -> 08:56 AM) If this is the case then I'd rather have Burnett, simply because I believe that our starting pitching needs more help than our bullpen. That's JMO though and I can see why people would want Wagner instead. So I take it you have no problem with Vizcaino giving up 4 hits while only recording one out against the second worst team in the AL? And I have no idea where you get the fact that our bullpen is better than our rotation. Number wise, we look like this... Buehrle - 11-4, 2.96 ERA, 1.14 WHIP Garcia - 10-4, 3.76 ERA, 1.25 WHIP Garland - 15-4, 3.09 ERA, 1.10 WHIP Contreras - 6-6, 4.36 ERA(10 QS, 4 decent starts), 1.36 WHIP Duque - 7-3, 4.78 ERA, 1.57 WHIP The top 3 are very solid, and the last 2 are very good numbers from a 4 and 5 starter(even if Contreras is getting paid like a #2) Bullpen wise, it is similar...however, the back end of the pen has been shaky at best... Hermanson - 1.85 ERA, 1.18 WHIP Politte - 1.71 ERA, 0.81 WHIP Cotts - 2.36 ERA, 1.05 WHIP Marte - 2.90 ERA, 1.65 WHIP Vizcaino - 4.01 ERA, 1.56 WHIP Jenks - 4.32 ERA, 2.04 WHIP(I do not bold this as he is mainly a mopup guy just getting the team through the game) Those last 3 have been far from dependable whatsoever this year, with Marte having no contrl whatsoever, and Vizcaino just having the s*** hit out of him all year. By making this trade, you are getting rid of the worst WHIP in your bullpen and adding a 0.97 WHIP(and a guy who hasn't had a WHIP above 1.00 since 2001). The rotation really cannot be upgraded much with Burnett, because his 3.48 ERA will undoubtedly increase in the AL, and his 1.26 ERA is nothing to write home about...that puts him, at best, as our 4th starter in the rotation. This means he will make maybe 3 starts in the playoffs, if the Sox were to not sweep in the ALDS. Meanwhile, Wagner could probably be used in half the games in the playoffs, thus increasing his value an incredible amount. By having Wagner, you do not worry about ever running into a Marte/Vizcaino/Jenks situation where they have to be brought into a crucial situation. Politte-Cotts are excellent middle relievers, Hermanson is a hell of a good setup man, and Wagner is one of the most dominating closers in the majors. You make that trade, and your pen is almost unhittable, and catastrophe's, like yesterday's game, don't happen, in all likelyhood.
