QUOTE(ptatc @ Jun 29, 2005 -> 02:27 PM) The injury is caused from throwing. Catchers are particularly suceptible because of the quick release, short arming the throw. Pitchers get it from repetitive thowing especially if they drop to a 3/4 arm angle or lower. Either way it's when the humerus gets ahead of the forearm and creates a high velocity torque to pull them apart. Through various studies it has been shown that almost all throws create enough torque to tear the ligament. It is only through proper mechanics and musculature that it doesn't tear. Catchers with the short time to get rid of the ball usually use poor mechanics and the ligament loosens then can tear. The stress from a throw goes to the ulnar nerve which is under the ligament if the ligament is loose. So, every throw can feel like "hitting your funny bone." This problem is probably almost as common in catchers as pitchers percentage wise, its just that there are many more pitchers out there. I luuuuuuuuuv it when you analyze

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Jun 30, 2005 -> 12:37 PM) Daigle had more hits last night than Magglio has had on his entire rehab so far. Maggs is 1-19 between AAA and the majors this season. Good thing we resigned him

QUOTE(Jabroni @ Jun 29, 2005 -> 12:15 AM) Please. Uribe is struggling but his bat is still way better than Valdez's. Even Ozuna is 10 times the player Valdez is. Valdez was hitting .198 on the season. There's a reason he is in the minors right now. He has a good glove but absolutely no stick whatsoever. There's also Pokey Reese, who can hit .200 for you and still help the team win, just with his glove. Saves all kinds of runs on defense. Have him playing backup 2B, SS, and 3B, and I would be fine and dandy. Hell, we might get lucky and Pokey might hit in the .240 range and put up a .650-.700 OPS, and actually help a little offensively. Not that I necessarily want him to start...but having him as a backup? Sure, bring him on. There is also Omar Vizquel - and he doesn't have a ridiculously bad contract(except that he has a 3rd year, which is teh sux0rs) -

QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 05:41 PM) Schmidt's only had 2 starts in the playoffs. Or 5. 2 in the NLDS, 1 in the NLCS, and 2 in the World Series. -
On the ugliest suit, I vote for David Stern in 1984 for the ugliest mustache ever.

QUOTE(jerseysox @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 04:52 PM) alright. jerry's final thought: you guys believe that since cliff politte has awesome numbers as a middle reliever, he should go to the all-star game i believe that a closer with a sub-3 era who leads the league in saves is more deserving, despite the fact his era and whip are higher. i consider the 21 of 24 in save opps are more important. that's just my opinion. i got nothing but love for you all. peace, love and white sox baseball. It's cool Would hate to see Wickman in the ASG over Cliff, but it's not like I wouldn't understand why. I just hate Wickman. And Politte has probably been the best reliever in the majors this year, all things considered. That's why I feel he should go. He won't go, because middle relievers are underly appreciated by most, and he also won't go because Francona is a homer and will have Timlin go instead.
-
QUOTE(jerseysox @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 04:41 PM) he leads the al in saves. he has an era of 2.80. he's 21 of 24 in save opps. he pitches much more meaningful innings than politte. sorry if i failed to mention that. I am totally dumbfounded by that statement. Politte has been in the setup role almost the entire year, and he has pitched out of a good amount of jams(as proven by his 4 for 24 IHRS), and has pitched in enough tie ballgames, as Willie mentioned, to get 5 wins, along with having 7 holds. You also have to realize that if you pitch when the team is down by 1 or 2, you are not going to get a hold, but to keep the opposition at bay, not allowing them to score any more runs is vital. You think we have as many late run rallies because Vizcaino has been pitching in those innings?
-
QUOTE(jerseysox @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 04:40 PM) yep, all he does is close games. that's not important. pitching well in the 7th and 8th -- now that's what really counts. you got me. a fantastic argument. Getting the 3-4-5-6 hitters out in the 7th and 8th is easier than getting the 7th-8th/PH-PH out in the 9th? Getting out of a 1st and 2nd, nobody out jam in the 8th is so much easier than starting an inning and getting 3 outs, right? The 7th and 8th are just as important as the 9th...the difference with the 9th is that it is the other team's last 3 outs, so they will do nearly anything to try and tie the game up. That, and it's the final 3 outs of the game.

QUOTE(jerseysox @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 04:33 PM) huh? let me speak slowly you think cliff politte SHOULD be an all-star i think heidi klum SHOULD have sex with me cliff pollite WON'T be an all-star heidi klum WON'T have sex with me i'm sorry if i threw anyone off there with that. Statistically information backs up Politte for All-star. Nothing but your opinion backs up your Klum fantasy

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 04:21 PM) Nah. They are top 5 for sure. Maybe top 3. I gotta give Minny the best bullpen honors. As far as actual playoff contenders? Probably.

QUOTE(qwerty @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 04:18 PM) His era will be around four at the end of the year. He has alot of things against him now. I hope Hermy puts up a 4.24 ERA and Rowand a .271 average.

QUOTE(jerseysox @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 04:07 PM) well, with relievers, it's all about how many runners you allow to score, be it yours or someone elses. and the only way you're getting in ahead of a closer is if you are perfect in the inherited runners scored department. because if it's close, i value a save a little more highly than a hold. so wickman, who has 21 saves and a damn good era, is getting in ahead of cliff politte, who pitches the 7th and 8th and has a damn good era. Politte has an ERA in the 1's, and, need it be mentioned again, has allowed 4 of 24 inherited runners to score. And if the most specific you are going to get on ERA is "damn good", you are being far, far too general. Both Mark Buehrle and Roger Clemens have "damn good" ERA's, but Clemens has clearly been superior to Mark in that category this year, putting up an unbelievably low ERA of 1.51, while Buehrle is at 2.48. Politte has been superior to Wickman in all categories this year except saves. It should also be noted that Crain has allowed more runs(5) than Politte(4), though they have both allowed the same amount of earned runs. Politte's RA(run average) of 1.23 is better than Crain's RA of 1.30
-
QUOTE(jerseysox @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 03:57 PM) Alright. Who gets thrown off the island so the Holy Lord of Middle Relief can pitch in the All-Star Game? Wickman. 1.31 WHIP?

QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 03:47 PM) LAA is the only team with a better 4th starter than us. Minny doesn't have a good 4th starter. I believe that's Kyle Lohse or Joe Mays right now. They aren't better than Count and remember, Count dominates bad hitting clubs usually. Minny is a bad hitting club. Boston had Clement and Schilling, but Miller or Wakefield as their 4th. Miller isn't back to his form pre injury. And Minny does not have a better hitting club than us. I don't like Anaheim's staff...never have. Colon is hittable, Byrd is not someone who really scares me, Washburn is fairly mediocre, and Lackey is someone I have never really liked(though he is pitching pretty solidly this year). They are good 1-5, and really, everyone in their rotation could be in or out of the playoff rotation without any big deal, and that's not a compliment come playoff time. Boston's staff has proven to be very shaky up and down all year...they are banking a lot on Schilling coming back and pitching well, and that is not a guarantee at all. Minnesota scares me, due to the streakiness of their staff...they get hot, and they are damn near unbeatable, but when they are off, they are a .500 team or worse. They also probably have the best bullpen in the majors, or at the very least, top 3. Cleveland is similar to Anaheim, except that the same depth is not there up and down. Elarton won't be starting in the playoffs any time soon for them. -
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 03:43 PM) I'm a f***ing idiot. Appearantly I can't read. I thought Urbina was on the Indians last year too at the beginning of the year, so ya, it happens to all of us. Steff, I think it would be alright. Unless you wanna dish out a hundred or 2 to get a CLee Brewers jersey.

QUOTE(jerseysox @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 03:44 PM) he's not better than crain. and if he wasn't a white sock, you wouldn't be arguing this. Politte is allowing 16.7% of inherited runners to score...meaning he gets out of the situation unscathed 5 out of 6 times. Crain is allowing 26.3% of inherited runners to score...meaning he gets out of it unscathed roughly 3 out of 4 times. Politte also has a better WHIP than Crain too, probably the most important stat for relievers in the game. Politte > Crain, and everyone else you brought up

QUOTE(jerseysox @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 03:38 PM) let's put these guys in the all-star game too: arthur rhodes -- 31 IP, 24 H, 5 BB, 0.87 ERA jesse crain -- 34.2 IP, 22 H, 8 BB, 1.04 ERA justin duchscherer -- 38.2 IP, 30 H, 8 BB, 1.40 ERA mike timlin -- 37.1 IP, 36 H, 9 BB, 1.21 ERA cliff politte is just another good middle reliever. not an all-star. or should we invite all of these guys too? i know, let's invite nothing but really good middle relievers, and let closers and starters stay at home. i'm sure there's a thread in cleveland, minnesota, oakland and boston talking about how all these guys should go to. Politte > all

QUOTE(jerseysox @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 01:51 PM) i truly believe that if cliff politte was a freaking brewer, none of us would care if he made the all-star team. and you know why? because he's a freaking middle reliever!!!! this is the ALL-STAR GAME. it's like putting a guy on the team because he's really, really good at sacrificing runners over. no one goes to games to see craig counsell move guys over, and no one goes to games to watch cliff politte pitch the 8th inning. let's move on. is cliff politte really good at what he does? f*** yeah. but he's not an all-star. The comparison is flawed. Politte is an integral part of the pen, pitching in some of the most pressure packed situations. He has to get the ball over to the closer. If you wanted to make a comparison like that, he would be compared to a leadoff hitter or a 2nd hitter, setting the next pitcher up to succeed in his role. A better comparison for your logic, since most sac bunts come when you absolutely need them, and are put down almost exclusively by weaker hitters, would be a mopup guy. You will never see a mopup, 3 inning, pitch-in-a-blowout pitcher ever pitch in an ASG if that has been his role the entire season(and I add that last part because Jake Westbrook started last season in that role, but was an All-Star as a starter).

QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 03:18 PM) Your looking too much into it. The answer to your question is simply, YES!!!! If he is throwing around 94-95, I'm for it, probably. I like BMac a lot...but his stuff may not be good enough to be dominant like he was all of last year in the minors as an MLB starter, making him not untouchable enough(if that were to make sense)...this trade makes me leery. We'll all have to wait another 20-25 days anyways to see what exactly will happen with the situation -

QUOTE(Jabroni @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 10:35 AM) I would just be so afraid of what Busty Baker did to his arm. You mean Felipe Alou. Dusty left after the 2002 season Schmidt then put up sick numbers(17-5, 2.34 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, .200 BAA, K/9 of 9, K/BB of >4 in 03; 18-7, 3.20 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, .202 BAA, K/9 of 10, K/BB of >3 in 04) with Alou at the helm and Dusty wearing that cheesy ass blue. My only fear about Schmidt is that he reminds me a lot of Freddy Garcia. Not saying Freddy Garcia is bad, because he's not...but Schmidt is pitching in like the 3rd best pitcher's park in the majors, similar to Garcia in Safeco, and he's going to Coors Field east(and, not that it is the exact same, but it is somewhat comparable - his ERA at Coors over his career is 5.12...given, that is including his s*** days in Pittsburgh, but the point remains). Is that worth BMac and one of our OF prospects? -
QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 02:16 PM) Yeah....QWERTY pretty much wanted to kill Scotty after that deal. Worked out well huh? What did he say after the Freddy trade? Contrary, what did he say about the Wells or Ritchie trades??? qwerty still hates Podsednik. Don't know where you've been
