  1. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ May 2, 2005 -> 10:03 PM) Another guy I like is Durazo, the DH for Oakland. Oakland fans have said that he's really not a good firstbaseman, but he has a career 129 OPS+. Oakland probably isn't going to resign him (or so I've heard), and I'd love to see he and Thomas in the middle of our lineup -- two OBP machines hitting third and fourth would be excellent. Like I said, if he's that much of a butcher defensively at first, then it's dumb that I even brought it up... IIRC, the reason Arizona moved Durazo was because he kept getting injured at 1B...so maybe having a Thomas/Durazo 1B/DH platoon is not so hawt.
  2. Why does everyone seemingly think that the Sox could not use more pitching, and that the offense is the biggest concern? The offense will heat up as the weather does...it has done that for about the past million years. The pitching will get worse. You do not honestly expect Hermanson and Politte to continue to pitch over their heads like this, do you? I like Hermanson a lot, but Politte scares me. Marte's BB/9 is Koch-esque. Shingo has been shaky to say the very least. Vizcaino has not been a stud for us by any means either. I would say about the first thing this team could use is a very strong pitcher in the pen. Add Billy Wagner, and you're looking at Wagner-Hermanson-Marte with Shingo, Viz, and Politte at the end...that is beyond sick, and probably the best bullpen in the majors.
  3. I am happy to see that Garland actually had the balls to do it...though, he has been known to do it before, so it should not come as a huge surprise. PS Nuke, TYPE HERE DAMMIT
  4. QUOTE(Heads22 @ May 1, 2005 -> 10:11 PM) I knew my irrational defense of every Sox player would pay off at some distant, inconsequential point in the future... Now don't bring up I was always on the Koch bandwagon.... Hey, how come you always were on the Koch bandwagon?
  5. QUOTE(qwerty @ May 2, 2005 -> 12:09 AM) What if say hermanson and marte blow a combined three saves in a week, you think soxtalk would blow up? It would asplode
  6. QUOTE(Tmar28 @ May 1, 2005 -> 09:54 PM) booooooo (throws rotten fruit) ^^^
  7. I'd say it got him out of his game Pitch 1: Garland throws behind White's back (benches clear, White acts tough) Pitch 2: 55 foot curveball, White swings Pitch 3: Flyball, CF But White is good like that Also, White said it adds more fuel to the fire...but everyone knows White will be on the DL by then, since he makes a trip or 2 there every year.
  8. QUOTE(aboz56 @ May 1, 2005 -> 09:19 PM) He won't win 20, please write that down and save it. K bookmarked
  9. QUOTE(KWs OK for Me @ May 1, 2005 -> 09:11 PM) I think JG is a 20 game winner for one reason, he is in the 5 hole, he matches up against 5th starters (for the most part). Here is a list of the fifth starters in the AL: Kevin Gregg, Joe Blanton, Dave Bush, Hideo Nomo, Scott Elarton, Ryan Franklin, Bruce Chen, Pedro Astacio, Bronson Arroyo, Zach Greinke,Wilfredo Ledezma, Joe Mays, Kevin Brown I know that I'd take Garland in any game over any of those guys. If he continues to throw strikes, get the ground ball outs, and continue to limit his walks I dont see why he can't be a 20 game winner this year Those matchups won't be consistent as the year goes on. Offdays and rainouts will cancel out most 5 vs 5 matchups.
  10. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ May 1, 2005 -> 09:06 PM) Pablo. Honestly, right now there isn't much to mess with on this team, I think Frank Thomas might be our big move this year, honestly. Obviously injuries can and will happen but there is a lot of depth everywhere to get through something like that happening. I guess Pablo's alright
  11. QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ May 1, 2005 -> 06:39 PM) 5) MIN 15-9 2.5 gb (needs 3 wins coupled w 3 CHW losses to catch us) Impossible with only 137 games left
  12. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ May 1, 2005 -> 08:57 PM) I like that Frank is open with his dislike of steroids! Go Frank! He has been open with this stance forever. Like literally, forever

    Cousins Wed....

    OMG, an inspirtational story like this makes me want to go out and marry MY cousin. Or probably not
  14. QUOTE(Chisoxmatt @ May 1, 2005 -> 08:47 PM) guys, lets not get ahead of ourselves here. Its just the beginning of the year. You are all acting like he will win the Cy Young becuase of his great start. Obviously i hope this is true. But lets wait awhile before we start making a bunch of Jon Garland appreciation threads. Have you watched him pitch? He will obviously slow down as the year progresses, but Jon is for realz homez. Looks like a 20 game winner right now, and I don't doubt that he could win 20.
  15. QUOTE(T R U @ May 1, 2005 -> 08:42 PM) silence you hippie Me = right U = wrong So no
  16. QUOTE(CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ May 1, 2005 -> 08:35 PM) Awwww , Sorry if you dont see your name on the list . I used the search and typed in Garland. I realize some of Soxtalk's most ardent posters are not on the list , but that just means they didnt post in the threads I read. I didn't have all day to do this. Thought it would be fun though. I expect more out of you You're fired(insert Donald Trump photo)
  17. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ May 1, 2005 -> 08:29 PM) Ok Juggernaut....what have you done with the real whitesoxfan?!? Have not done a thing with whitesoxfan. Similarities are too apparent to be ignored though.
  18. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ May 1, 2005 -> 08:32 PM) This article would have made more sense for us about 2 to 3 months ago. With our depth, or lack thereof, in the middle infield, and our lack of a true utility IFer, we will still have some interest in him. We don't need a move, because we have all kinds of guys that can play that...but why have 2 guys that play 4 positions when you can have 1 guy that plays all 4? That is an extra roster spot that could become needed.
  19. I also like to get it in that I was like the first on here to compare him to Jason Marquis, who had a pretty solid year last year. Go look that up...you will see
  20. Well, he was a mediocre pitcher in years past with dull stuff. This year, he has been sensational with outstanding stuff. Things change. If he were going out and putting up complete game, 4-hit shutouts with soft ass stuff, I'd be s***ting bricks of gold.
  21. I much prefer the Kevin Brown comparison. Brown's 1st and 2nd season were better than Garland's, but his 3rd was worse. Brown, in his 4th full year of starting, won 21 games while posting a 3.32 ERA. That is Jon Garland, from the way he has pitched thus far. In fact, when you compare their careers as far as their seasons in the majors are concerned, they are eerily similar. Brown - 89-91, K/BB 1.31, K/9 4.46, BB/9 3.40, WHIP 1.37, ERA 3.81, (coincidentally, he had 12 wins in 89 and 90) - Brown was an above average pitcher Garland - 02-04, K/BB 1.43, K/9 5, BB/9 3.49, WHIP 1.38, ERA 4.67 - Garland was an average pitcher Now... Brown - 92, K/BB 2.22, K/9 5.86, BB/9 2.57, WHIP 1.27, 3.32 ERA - as I mentioned above, 21 wins Garland - 05, K/BB 2.83, K/9 3.92, BB/9 1.38, WHIP 0.79, 1.38 ERA - given, that is through 5 starts, but so long as he stays healthy, it is nearly impossible for him to win 12 games or fewer. He looks like a 20 game winner thus far Brown's control got even better over time, and his K/9 and K/BB started shooting way up, even into the Ben Sheets range.
  22. Milton Bradley is fun, especially when he is hitting no-doubters. But Bret Boone and Torii Hunter, with their bat flips, just piss me off. Also, Uribe and Valentin are awesome. Josh Beckett when he is flinging it well. Byrnes and Chavez, Tim Hudson...a lot of the A's players, current and former. Jose Guillen, Vlad, Ichiro, Johan, Teixiera...I like lots.
  23. IIRC, the scores of the last 3 games Santana has lost... 2-1 Ana 2-0 Det 2-1 CHW That is sickeningly good
  24. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ May 1, 2005 -> 04:59 PM) And this is mostly due to the top of the order getting on, getting over, and getting in. Good job, and a great testiment to the work that Pods and Tad have done at the top of the order. Those two are why the Sox offense has had any production whatsoever. I don't want to say they will be what gets us to the playoffs...because they won't be, that will be the pitching...but without them, we really don't have a shot.
