  1. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Oct 23, 2013 -> 03:06 PM) You shut up. If it wasn't for stupid Chris Shelton, the Sox probably would have won it in 2006 too.
  2. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Oct 23, 2013 -> 02:50 PM) Aaron Rowand says piss off He did get another ring, but getting rid of him seemed to be a good luck charm for both the Phillies ('08) and Giants ('12)
  3. QUOTE (Leonard of Berwyn @ Oct 23, 2013 -> 02:42 PM) How about Santiago, Beckham and Flowers for Lawrie, Gose and Arencibia. Fills holes for both sides as well as change of scenery for the two catchers. I highly doubt the Jays would do this, but I want nothing to do with JP Arencibia ever. He has a worse approach at the plate than just about anybody in the league. He wants to swing the bat no matter what is given to him. Arencibia's on base percentage last year was about as bad as Adam Dunn's batting average (.227 to .219). His K/BB was 8.2 and his K% was 29.8%. He might seriously be the worst hitter in the major leagues.
  4. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 23, 2013 -> 12:26 PM) Which probably goes to show it is just as important for the player to select where he plays as it is the team that selects him. If Pena signed with the Sox, he probably doesn't get much of an opportunity and probably winds up making a lot less money during his career. Very much so. When guys leave for a better opportunity, whether for money or playing time, it's really hard for fans to hold it against them. A normal person's career is anywhere between 40-50 years. These guys are going to be extremely lucky if they can "work" for 15 years.
  5. QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 23, 2013 -> 02:20 PM) And we have fans talking about keeping payroll down??? Spend, spend, spend. We're all being sold a bill of goods. The Sox franchise is a GOLDMINE. Give us a winner, White Sox. Keep spending on players until you get the right combination PLEASE. Addendum: We still have the right to blast the players who fail when given zillions of dollars like Dunn and Pujols, etc. Greg, there's not a whole lot available that is worth that kind of money. And then you say "spend all this money" while then saying "well we get to boo them too." It's not like Dunn or Pujols aren't trying, but getting injured and older is apart of the game, and they will begin to struggle. I will always remember that you called for them to sign these "bums."
  6. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Oct 23, 2013 -> 01:00 PM) considering what the group that bought it for paid for it, that is INSANE!!!! 4800% return on investment isn't bad, is it?
  7. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Oct 23, 2013 -> 12:15 PM) When you have control of that player for only one year . . . You are not barred from re-signing him or making a qualifying offer to him.
  8. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 23, 2013 -> 12:05 PM) I'd take Bridgewater everyday over him. He spins it as good as anyone thats comes out the last several years. I would too. God I love Bridgewater.
  9. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Oct 23, 2013 -> 12:03 PM) They're not going to contend next year with Headley You really need to stop using this argument. You could say that about damn near anybody but the fact of the matter is, if they bring in enough talented players, they could compete. I'm not saying they will do either. I'm saying you don't stop yourself from acquiring a good player because "you're not going to compete," especially if the cost is right. This is a valid reason, but I don't think it's that they'll ask too much but rather than someone else is likely to pay more for him.
  10. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 23, 2013 -> 11:57 AM) Where would Pena have played? Konerko and Thome were taking up his spots. I guess you could have put him in LF, but then the Sox might not have picked up Quentin in 2008. Psshh second base Yeah, I wanted him strictly as a backup. It was merely ironic and coincidental that I was asking for the Sox to sign him and then he went bonkers
  11. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Oct 23, 2013 -> 10:25 AM) With the group of young starters the Sox have, I might rather deal Quintana and fill multiple positions, sign a free-agent starter and save an estimated $35-$40M. I'm saying that I'm not going to sign either Jimenez or Garza and that I'd rather go into the year with Sale, Quintana/Santiago, Johnson, Danks, and Rienzo. Garza is a rather overrated pitcher who rates closer to a #3-4 starter than anything else and Ubaldo Jimenez has this tendency to throw incredibly well for about 15 starts at a time while following it up with 75 starts of pure s***. As I said already, I have no problem shopping Quintana or Santiago and if you don't get exactly what you want, you don't deal them.
  12. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Oct 23, 2013 -> 10:17 AM) Would you rather sign a pitcher or two position players? Two position players, every time
  13. God I wish I were still in school
  14. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Oct 23, 2013 -> 10:10 AM) Jeff Hoffman, Ubaldo Jimenez, Matt Garza, etc... You don't trade Peavy to sign Jimenez or Garza. Those guys would be terrible acquisitions, ESPECIALLY with the Sox ability to develop starting pitchers
  15. I hate that the Giants won 2 World Series titles because it makes people think that Sabean isn't the worst GM in the game when he clearly still takes the cake
  16. I agree as well, but I don't mind shopping them. If you don't find the package you want, you don't trade them.
  17. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Oct 23, 2013 -> 09:52 AM) Russell Wilson and Drew Brees don't have weak arms. Even if those two are comparable, they are just two players. Brees is a once in a lifetime hall of fame talent, who you can't compare anyone to. Wilson has been good, but not great. Probably has been a better runner than QB. Also if Manziel is listed by Texas A & M at 6'1 200, you can guarantee he isn't 6'1 200. He's not listed as 6'1 200, he's listed at 6'1 210. Russell Wilson was listed as 5'11 210 on Wisconsin's website. They wouldn't jack up his height by like 3 inches, which is essentially what you're saying. He's probably like 6'1/2" and they rounded up. Manziel shows composure in the pocket, has proven to be incredibly accurate, sees the field well, and shows good enough arm strength. He's also proven to be an incredibly effective runner as well. And, beyond any of that, he's about the only QB who's ever lit up the Alabama defense. That's an NFL-style defense with NFL caliber prospects all over the place. And Brees does have a pretty weak arm. He's just incredibly accurate.
  18. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 23, 2013 -> 09:46 AM) I'd be shocked if McCann got that much per year. 5/$80 wouldn't shock me
  19. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Oct 23, 2013 -> 09:40 AM) It's also because of his ability. He is probably not even 6 foot tall. Has a weak arm and a small frame. When has that ever worked in the NFL? Russell Wilson and Drew Brees. Beyond that, Manziel's listed at 6'1", 210. I also don't think he has a weak arm whatsoever. Attitude is a legitimate concern, but I think that's a college kid being a college kid but I think a lot of it has been blown out of proportion. It would be necessary to investigate in depth.
  20. A player in the situation that Kyle Seager is in. Young player, cost controlled, who is currently about a 3-5 WAR player.
  21. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Oct 22, 2013 -> 11:50 PM) Fun to go back to old threads and look at which posters were around back than. Here's another fun one http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=56432 EDIT: I suggested the Sox sign Carlos Pena to a minor league deal rather than sign Erstad. All he did that year was put up .282/.411/.627/1.037. Pretty sure they did actually bring in Eduardo Perez too, and he retired in Spring Training. God I nailed that thread.
  22. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 23, 2013 -> 08:38 AM) Barry Bonds put up the best OBP in history. He should be able to teach Viciedo to take walks in no time. NO DIPS*** THE NEEDLE GOES IN LIKE THIS
  23. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Oct 22, 2013 -> 06:17 PM) It's hard to find a perfect comparison for Manziel, the best I've thought of is Colt McCoy though Colt didn't run as much. I like Johnny more than pretty much everyone but I don't see him being a successful NFL starter. Player A: 800 for 1192, 67.1%, 10366 yards, 8.7 Y/A, 78 TD, 17 INT, 158.9 Rating; 528 ATT, 2254 YDS, 4.3 Y/A, 33 TD Manziel: 454 for 651, 69.7%, 5995 yards, 9.2 Y/A, 44 TD, 16 INT, 164.5 Rating; 285 ATT, 1885 YDS, 6.6 Y/A, 27 TD Manziel looks pretty good. What I'm wondering is, if Robert Griffin III was good enough to be drafted 2nd overall, why do we believe that Manziel can't play? QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Oct 22, 2013 -> 06:55 PM) Manziel is going to have to become a lot more judicious with his throws if he wants to make it in the NFL. This I do not disagree with.
  24. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Oct 22, 2013 -> 05:35 PM) You aren't getting Ellsbury & McCann for the same price as Cano. Those guys are each going get anywhere between $16M to $22M a year. Per year, no. Total package, if Cano is dead set on getting $250 mill, or even $200 mill, there's certainly a very good possibility.
