  1. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Oct 17, 2013 -> 02:09 PM) Atlanta has to be one. Who are the other two? Oakland? Tampa? Has to be. I know it couldn't be St. Louis, what with the greatest fans in the world.
  2. I would just like to point out how obvious the collapse was in 2008 too.
  3. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Oct 17, 2013 -> 12:17 PM) I meant it out of love. Figured you'd take it as a compliment. If I hurt your feelings, I'm truly sorry. I did take it as a compliment. I just was hoping I could return the favor.
  4. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 17, 2013 -> 01:18 PM) The Andrew Friedman regime absolutely has not spent big money in free agency. Draft, sign for a few years into free agency, trade before deal is concluded, repeat. It will be interesting when Longoria's deal gets close to being up. You mean in 2023? That doesn't even seem real, but that's when Longoria's a free agent. There'll probably be robots in the league.
  5. On the plus side, his first name is still Micker
  6. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 17, 2013 -> 09:57 AM) THE ARTICLE DID.... as an alternative to overspending on Granderson. Chris Young is terrible and so is the author who suggested bringing in Chris Young.
  7. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Oct 17, 2013 -> 10:15 AM) It's entirely possible, in that you can't DISPROVE it, that a player's defensive and baserunning skills are fueled by the SAME pool of mana. If this is true, and also the law of conservation of mass and energy is true, we can assume that any improvement ADA would make in one category would necessarily make him worse in the other. As far as explaining him getting worse at both? He would have to have been selling his mana for drugs or something. I hate those mana for health spells. I mean seriously, just save a f***ing potion or something
  8. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Oct 17, 2013 -> 09:42 AM) This is a call back to something, right? You need to refresh my memory, Blake. You called me a drunk, salty bastard on Twitter
  9. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Oct 17, 2013 -> 09:04 AM) Could use some advice. Use more deodorant
  10. QUOTE (Tex @ Oct 16, 2013 -> 08:40 PM) Ok. Players always play with the same effort. Doesn't matter the situation. I guess I imagined guys says "we were trying to win one for X". Sorry. Well I just find it absurd that these guys weren't out there busting their ass trying to score runs while Sale was on the mound. Maybe they were TOO focused? Maybe they should screw off more and relax. It's not something you can control for, and to assume guys try harder to score for others, or they try harderer to score for 1 guy is silly. I mean, Chris Sale had like 12 outings or something were he gave up 0 or 1 run and didn't get a decision.
  11. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 16, 2013 -> 08:59 PM) I WAS ONLY TALKING ABOUT PLAYOFF PERFORMANCE!!!! ONCE AGAIN, NOT SAYING HE'S BETTER THAN THOSE PLAYERS....HAYYYS We are talking about a 22 year old rookie, are we not? Who has never played in the MLB playoffs before? If I remember correctly, many superstars like Bonds and Frank Thomas and A-Rod have struggled mightily in the playoffs (in their entire 20's) and were WAY under anything Puig has accomplished already. LOL. Do you realize how ridiculous you come off sometimes? To actually compare playoff numbers between players is absolutely absurd. You need large sample sizes to be able to come up with a significant sample size to determine whether or not a player is "clutch" because it's the postseason, and the absolute most you could really get in 1 postseason appearance is 100, but that's if you played in the Wild Card round, 5 games in the LDS, 7 in the LCS, and 7 in the World Series. That's never happened. More likely, you get a guy who ends up with anywhere between 10 and 60 plate appearances. But really, you should compare what he did to Danny Bautista in the 2001 World Series. Or compare his World Series stats to Geoff Blum's.
  12. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 16, 2013 -> 07:04 PM) Next to zero. You included 2 too many words in there
  13. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 17, 2013 -> 02:23 AM) Coachable in terms of general offensive philosophy and making smart decisions (not going brain dead on routine plays) out in the field on a consistent basis. I don't believe Alejandro De Aza can learn how to steal bases. (show Alexei's improvement) Yeah BUT HOW DID HE DO IN THE FIELD
  14. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 17, 2013 -> 02:20 AM) But the Astros already have a clone of Abreu in Cris Carter, haha. #1, I'm pretty sure Cris Carter is working at ESPN and that he is far too old to be picking up baseball #2, I'm also pretty sure that, if Abreu is a Chris Carter clone, the A's and Dodgers both have a Chris Carter clone too
  15. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 17, 2013 -> 02:17 AM) What is the downward OPS/WAR correction from that Boston Red Sox offense to the White Sox, where there would be a lot less protection and definitely more offensive production expected...more pressure to earn his contract? Protection has been proven time and time and time again to be a myth made up by ancient baseball gods to get people to pay more for players. Or, at the very least, it's a myth, because that protection sure worked well in 2011, didn't it? And if you're afraid that he'll underachieve trying to earn his contract, then there's no point to ever sign anyone to a multi year deal and you may as well go with pre-arb players every year. Of course, then you run into the conundrum of those players trying to hard to earn their salary every year, and then you're left with a 120 loss team and s*** how did I get here? uhhh, Chris Young? Same guy who's put up .225/.312/.412/.725 over his last 1400 plate appearances and can't hit right handed pitching? Yeah sure sounds like an upgrade WHAT? Chris Young is a backup. He hits left handed pitching and that's about it, and he doesn't do it particularly well. Why do you keep bringing him up?
  16. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Oct 16, 2013 -> 04:50 PM) I have an authentic red Braves Salty jersey, I'd love to get a authentic black White Sox Salty jersey. Then I'd get to call YOU a salty bastard
  17. Might be a guy that Bears should look to pick up
  18. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Oct 16, 2013 -> 03:30 PM) It seems anyone who doesn't throw 90+ consistently will get compared to Buehrle, but unfortunately we may never see anyone else have the success Buehrle had w/ the Sox given his lack of typical pitcher skills. It's unfortunate that the general idea is that any soft tossing lefty is immediately compared to Buehrle. Like I said, he doesn't throw hard, but his repertoire and command are exceptional. You just don't put up ERAs in the 3.50-4.25 range for 13 years (save 2006) while consistently making 31+ starts and throwing 200+ innings if you are a mere soft tossing lefty. If this kid could do it once, it would be incredible. EDIT: It's nuts looking at his pitch usage this year. 30.4% 4-seam 84.1 MPH, 23.4% change up 78.8 MPH, 19.2% 2-seam 83.9 MPH, 19.4% cutter 80.1 MPH, 7.2% curveball 72.9 MPH. There's nothing you can do to get any sort of pattern set in your head, and he will throw any and all of those pitches at any point in the count, and he moves so fast that he never let's you even think about what might come next.
  19. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 16, 2013 -> 04:07 PM) Technically the city straddles the line between Virginia and Tennessee. The ballpark is actually in Virginia but it's about a mile from the state line; the line runs right through the city so there is a Bristol in both states. That's what I meant!
  20. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Oct 16, 2013 -> 03:45 PM) What state is Bristol in? I've always assumed it was Bristol, CT. Bristol, NC
  21. Take out Reed's two worst outings: 67.1 IP, 2.81 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, 2.94 BB/9, 8.8 K/9, 0.53 HR/9 They actually won one of those games too
  22. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Oct 16, 2013 -> 03:33 PM) That is such a weird concept to me, that minor league sports teams can essentially be traded to other organizations. Who do the people who live there then cheer for? Are they Pirates fans now? Are they fans of wherever these Bristol players move to? It's got to be a weird thing for a little kid whose favorite team is a minor league team. If you live in Bristol, your favorite team is NASCAR
  23. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Oct 16, 2013 -> 03:29 PM) Man that is a lot of money for such an unproven one-way player. But a Abreu-Garcia-Viciedo middle of the order could be dynamic if they meet their potential. Well, hopefully two tools, hit and power. There's a lot of value in a guy that can hit .300 with 30 homers.
  24. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Oct 16, 2013 -> 03:32 PM) To add to this, FWIW, Addison Reed ranked 13th of all RP in fWAR last year, ahead of guys like Aroldis Chpaman, Jason Grilli, and Mariano Rivera: http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=...=&players=0 Regardless of how you feel about fWAR, it is a stat based on FIP, which is designed to strip context (run support, bad defense, etc.) out of the pitcher's performance. This makes some intuitive sense considering how bad our defense was. EDIT: Also, #8? Nate Jones Nate Jones really did have a great, great year which was snake bitten by bad luck.
